Them killing nonstandard was a disappointment, but it wasn't the end of the line for me. BLM on DT release was atrociously bad, but a few patches in and it was in a good place. It still had some strange optimizations and nonstandard lines you could run, as well as goofy paradox shenanigans for movement; there was still enough that the class had a fun balance of tension between uptime and movement for mechanics, rewarding knowing the fight and good positioning.SE gutting non-standard BLM and making uptime a joke
It was the later overhaul of the job, around the release of Occult Crescent - I remember because I came back to check that out, and wound up quitting before its release because the overhaul was so fucking bad - that made it... I just don't know what the fantasy or the difficulty is even supposed to be. You deadass cannot have fun with it anymore, because it's so fucking easy.
Before it was brought to the guillotine, even annoyances like that were dealt with with Umbral Heart keeping Enochian rolling. They even (finally) implemented the (incredibly obvious) change to make it last indefinitely when cast out of combat, so you wouldn't have to keep spamming it every 15 seconds. Even with that, there were still so many opportunities for optimization, for little moments of eureka in realizing that you could do this-or-that. They dealt with the wonky mana regeneration of Ice phase and how it could clip you with server ticks (since laypeople hadn't caught onto the lucid dreaming tech), they gave you a shitton of swift and triple-casts, they got rid of sharpcast...There's no failure state anymore, I remember having to juggle transpose between trash packs to keep enochian up and now it's just nothing, you just get it automatically.
It was at a good balance between difficult and accessible. But because the narrative was "it's the hardest class" (not remotely), because ice mages exist, it had to be killed. It's not impossible that the new job design lead guy (I assume he's new) does a complete 180 and recognizes the stupidity of that rework in particular, which is why I still loosely pay attention to the game... but I'm not holding my breath. And if they don't fix it, I don't see a reason to come back -- even if I found another job that was fun, it'd just get the lobotomy treatment sooner or later.
