Personally, I am still looking forward to the FFXI raids. At least the scrawny blue lizard is an actual unapologetic villain instead of droning on and on about "What I am doing is actually the right thing, even though my delusions have glaring flaws or have been proven to be downright suicide for the shard."

The Ark Angels fight was my favorite, and it's nice to get their gear. Now if only they could also design Ark Angel themed weapons for each job. Fittingly for Dawntrail's English voice performance, however, I feel the English versions don't sound as hollow as the Japanese ones. This could just be my inner weeaboo speaking, but the Japanese voices have this sort of melancholy while still getting across the sins they represent through their delivery. The English voices mostly sound angry, probably because they raise their voices for some reason. It's those small details that get lost in the English voices that somehow drives me up a wall, idk.

I was really looking forward to the content of patch 7.2, especially cossmic exploration and occult crescent. However, the story has completely sapped my entire will to play this game. I spend so much time trying to get through DT and since doing that I have just been doing random stuff here and there. Mainly stuff from before DT because I just don't want to engage with anything there. In light of the new content and the idea that you might need to be up to date with the current MSQ as well ass the idea that my finishing DT was already 6 months ago, I thought let's try to start doing 7.1. I think I got 3 or 4 quests in and it has drained all my motivation for the game. I think I will just need to leave it until at least 7.3 or 7.4 and then read somewhere to see if the story has improved. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of the story, I thought it was good for a MMO and on par with most JRPGs, I just mainly enjoyed the grindy side-content and some random stuff to do, the horrendous quality of the MSQ as well as the significant drop inthe quality of dialogue writing, just completely drains any positive feelings for this game and makes me resent playing it.
Is cosmic exploration at least fun content that would warrant booting up the game to do that and just stay the fuck away from DT land?

That mostly depends on how much you like crafting and/or gathering as it is peak Japanese masochistic grind content. Granted, the crafting part has or will be totally automated if you felt inclined. The gathering part however has some very strict conditions for some of its missions (leves essentially.) It is a fairly cost effective way to grind those jobs if nothing else.

Cosmic Exploration has nothing to do with DT fwiw, you only needed base Endwalker done to play it. It's surprisingly addictive to me and I keep finding myself staying for the next mech op rewards (if you don't get in you can do ground support and get a boost to your rewards for the next 20 leves, I've gotten really into working on my tools and almost prefer it to the special gacha spin) and of course the red alert event whenever it comes up. Good performance on gathering missions being bottlenecked by GP regen (because you want to use your cordials during them) is still a lot of bullshit though.

I only bother with the Cosmic outfits for my gathering stuff because its largely gonna be in that zone. But yeah I can't stand this sci-fi shit. S9 and CE just does not jive well. I do not like the light strips like this is Cyberpunk clothes. Keep that shit out of the outfit pool.

You are not missing much. A lot of people will tell you the MSQ improved, but if you didn't vibe with any of the DT locales or characters, 7.1 and 7.2 are not going to do much for you. The Scions are still background characters, so if you enjoy them you won't be missing out by skipping, and the plot managed to circle back to things you assumed were already taken care of in 7.0.
Cosmic is somehow less lore relevant than the firmament restoration, it is fine for leveling DoH but absolute cancer for DoL. The only 'multiplayer' aspect of it are the FATE that spawn every 30 minutes or the phase changes which are absolutely nothing to write home gameplay wise. The only big of hopium I am huffing is that Crescent is going to be decent.

Truthfully, I didn't hate Wookie at first. I never liked the voice and started playing in JP, but beyond that, her intro wasn't that bad. Here comes some random lady asking for your help. She talks a boisterous game, and insists on fighting something with you to "see if you're up to snuff". You win, she breathes heavily a little but then hefts her axe above her shoulder and says that was easy, but you see her hand visibly shaking. I was strongly looking forward to Dawntrail allowing you to essentially guide her on a zero-to-hero journey.

The Rites of Succession sucked, being that they were either meaningless bullshit or legitimate problems for the tribes like starving to death. If I could have written this, I would have had Wuk lose the first rite to Koana and actually have to suck it up. She's constantly whinging about how she isn't smart like Koana, or strong like Zoraal Ja, but none of that ever inconveniences her when it should have. She should have almost quit the Rite because of the first Rite's failure, and we should have talked her into staying with it. She should have had the opportunity to put her money where her mouth is and actually crack open a book to study for her upcoming rule, showing that she is willing to do what she hates out of love for her people. Helping her study would have been something for Alphinaud and Alisaie to do, as well, while she occasionally asks you to spar with her. I was robbed of a legitimately touching story where we, an experienced adventurer, help a newbie find her wings. We could have seen her actually be inconvenienced and helped her grow as a person until she finally becomes a good contender for the throne. There should have been multiple story trials against her where the fights would get progressively harder as she learns how to fight better. She legitimately could have had a good character arc. Instead we got probably the biggest example of a black hole sue in an official product from a AAA company that I can remember. And that's only a fraction of the ways this one character was mishandled, not even touching all the other characters, and the story itself.

I hear a lot of people defending this as a shonen story with a shonen protagonist, but I honestly find that insulting to shonen stories with shonen protagonists. Shonen has at least a single training montage.

I guess it did lead me to going back to FF11. It's rough around the edges, a little, but it has more depth and player choice than FF14. I wish FF14 wasn't trying so hard to not be like FF11, because if it had the strengths of that game coupled with it's own, I think it would have legitimately earned the title of "The WoWkiller."

I agree entirely. It's clunky beyond belief. I mostly went back to it because the return to Vana'Diel campaign gave the subscription a discount. I mostly enjoy that it has player agency and choice, even though that leads to potential mess-ups. Despite how bad the interface is, I found it refreshing when FF14 has no job builds, no items that matter, all the jobs are homogenized and trapped in the class trinity, etc. The game has sanded off all sharp corners to become fool-proof at the expense of all depth. The PvP of the game somehow manages to fulfill the job fantasy aspect better than the PvE, which is absolutely insane. Additionally, I don't like the PvE fights based on just moving out of highlighted areas. I liked the Rathalos fight for having the balls to be fundamentally different, and proving that the spaghetti code of the engine is somewhat capable of making these different fights.

FF11 is a headache to play, but I can't help but wish the good parts were in FF14. A game with 14's modernisations and 11's depth would be my ideal game. It's just that the current trajectory of the game is killing me. My hopium is that the sweeping job changes yoshi-p said would come in 8.0 will be in that better direction, but the recent black mage change is casting big doubts.

Truthfully, though it was grinding, I enjoyed that battles kept you on your toes. I like that gear and abilities mattered in a deeper way. A mistake would legitimately put you on the back foot for a while in a fight until and unless you could regain the momentum after surviving long enough. Another aspect is that teamwork mattered. 14 requires all the players to play in parallel, without their locatoon or what they are specifically doing mattering that much in regards to your own gameplay. In 11, you were constantly juggling aggro, managing when to use your strongest abilities (healing or damaging) so that you didn't generate too much that a tank couldn't regain. Skillchains and magic bursts alone required you to be ready and make the right move in time, meaning it was better to do something suboptimal as a team instead of making optimal plays alone. One of the best parts was rhat there was no tank-heaker-dps trinity that every job had to 100% adhere to. The closeet to a traditional tank was paladin, and the closest to a traditional healer was white mage. Beyond that, it varied immensely all the time. You had ninjas serving as dodge tanks, thieves using directionals that manipulated enemy aggro, summoners swapping out to different summons based on need, etc. You played as whatever, and you had several tools for dealing with the fight that gave you some versatility. Probably the biggest aspect for me was that there are a shitload of activities for several different levels, and large amounts of horizontal progression. Nothing in the first 3 expacs felt outdated, since all were based around the lvl 75 cap, until the later ones raised it to 99, and even then, all expacs I encountered seemed to have areas of appropriate levels for those who weren't quite where the expac wanted them yet. The game nowadays is a bit stale, with much of the teamwork gone and replaced with admittedly-good trusts, so there isn't that much teamwork. I'm told private servers are much closer to the teamworking experience of old, but ultimately, it's just an old mmo. They cut down the grinding a lot, but it still exists.

It's far from a perfect game, but I can't help but think 14 would be better if it had more interesting job gameplay, bigger dungeons that were their own zones instead of expensive hallways, a more dangerous world that causes spontaneous team-ups, gear that serves as more than a stat stick, more activities to do at lower levels, etc. Biggest gripebisnjob design, because I noticed that dark knight didnt use ho as a resource at all, and I thought that was weird. 14 is a great game and very well made, but I can't help but feel that something is missing when I play it, and I realized it was that player choice aspect, in gear, class, fights, exploration.
