Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

I'm just gonna say this:

I didn't think they'd top Shadowbringer. I think I'm being proven wrong once again, even with the cutscenes being much, much longer this time around. I can see the Stormblood parallels here, but this here is what Stormblood should have been.

I'm only up to the Garlemald section so far, so this may still change.

Major pluses:
- The higher budget really shines this time. Even minor NPCs are voiced, and it just lends itself much better to gravitas they're trying to import. If you were hoping to see more of that crazy bitch Sadu, well, she's fucking back. Lucia, and a few other previously unvoiced side characters gets a VA as well, which was a pleasant surprise.
- The story, I feel, is very well paced so far. It looks like they learned from their prior lessons and didn't overstay their welcome, nor left things hanging. The Indian island arc, for example, lasts only 2 levels (surprisingly), but there's a definite start, middle (dungeon) and end. Contrast that with how Ala Mhigo was handled in the SB, where we get told to fuck off by Zenos and then there's simply no resolution while we fuck around in Doma.
- Aesthetics. Each area so far feels different, very vibrant. Indian island is cool. Sharlayan and Rapture Labyrinthos epitomises the Greek aesthetics. Even the ruined capital city of Garlemald has a desolate beauty in it.

Pluses:
- Garlemald. I know ITT some people were complaining how the big bad evil empire were never given a chance to humanise themselves. I have to say EW has mostly done the heavy lifting on this end. Even those who are unsympathetic, you can at least understand where they're coming from, even if it feels a tad forced. (Fuck do you care about pride when you're starving and cold? But maybe that's just how people are.)
- Solo duties. I bet this will be a divisive one, considering the multiple FORCED STEALTH section we got, but I think they were a nice diversion compared to the ones you got earlier. The Thancred one in particular, was very Metal Gear-esque. I wonder if they got hold of Kojimbo or something.
- Class changes. While they didn't fix some classes as I hope, the QOL changes to the jobs I do play is very good, and fixes the jank they had earlier. (BRD having to apply their DOTs just to get any use of their songs during mob pulling, SCH's fairy being extremely jank and casting spells with a delay). I can't say for the other jobs yet but it looks like they do an across the board QOL improvement for the rest as well.

Minuses
- Server queues. I think enough has been said about this.
- Cutscenes. Ho boy. They can really drag now. Expect multiple "Several cutscenes will play in succession etc etc" notices. You have been warned.

So... For previous expansions, how many days after release did players have to put up with forever queues?
I know Shadowbringer's didn't last for more than a week, but the queue time was also half of this expansion's insanity. I expect this to go on for another week, maybe two, dropping as people finish mainlining the MSQ.

I've been around for launch day/week of 3 seperate WoW expansions and i've never witnessed 8000 people queues with 2 or 3 hours to get in. It's pretty fucking crazy.

The main villian the cause of all of this the fall of Ascians to the literal second to final boss of the expansion is no fucking joke:

Space birds
Do you know what those birds are supposed to represent? They’re sparrows who, according to myth, carry souls of the dead. And the main villain is more like a semi artificial intelligence and sentient being who went rampant because its creator gave it vague orders that caused it to weaponize energy to turn itself into an eikon(?)

Looks like Yoshi-P is acknowledging that they might be way in over their head.

Considering that we are asking players to wait in queues for extremely long periods of time and the ongoing situation making it difficult to play normally, we have decided that during the official release of Endwalker on December 7, we will be granting 7 days of free game time to all players who own the full version of the game and have an active subscription. This also includes players who are currently playing on the 30-day free play period included when registering the full version of the game and those with multiple accounts.

Furthermore, we may give additional free game time depending on further developments on the congestion situation. The timing at which the free game time will be provided, as well as any additional extensions, will be announced at a later time. We truly appreciate your cooperation and patience regarding the congestion situation.

A nice gesture, regardless of whether you thought it's just a PR move. I don't recall Blizzard ever doing such.

They did during Warlords of Draenor lousy launch, too bad they couldn't apologize for it being a shitty expansion.
can't even remember that one, last time I remember was vanilla launch...

but yeah, the difference in attitude is obvious. "hm, our players are sitting in the queue a lot, which is nothing we can fix short term. least we can do is them not having to pay for watching a queue window". doesn't cost the company anything (sub's already been paid, trials haven't generated any money yet anyway) while giving you a week more to play - and if you continue your sub or buy the game that week doesn't make much of a difference for most accounts.

it's simply a smart play for easily generated player goodwill and positive PR.

It was, blizzard overplayed the hype, another reason why I hated the expansion was that people really thought they would get to relive their BC days again despite looking like a turd.

This was the last time the game was at 10M+ subs.

I can see the Stormblood parallels here, but this here is what Stormblood should have been.
This sums up my current thoughts (I just got the story aether current for zone 4 and am notably past the first trial)

It feels like SE actually properly introduced and explained all these places they've been hyping up for years when they introduce them and not a dozen hours later. It is very dense, and boy do I feel bad for MSQ skippers who have to slog through this, but I feel they mostly earn what they presented and I am quite satisfied with what I've seen. I don't quite have the FEELS of Shadowbringers. So I don't know if I'm quite sure if I think Shadowbringers is better or worse yet but I am very interested in where EW is going and perhaps that is harder to go for then just plain gut punching feels.

I will also say (spoilers up to the lvl 83 dungeon) despite knowing nothing is probably going to happen, never in this entire game have I had what I can only describe as anxiety during the entire Zenos body snatching section. What a great solo instance even if its a bit tedious.

i wish i could be playing more of this but im coping and sneeding with the queue times

time to setup a fucking paperweight on my W key lmao
Doesn't work unfortunately. Oldest trick in the book.

Gotta find some way to tap the w key every now and then. Like one of those drinking birds.

If given the opportunity I would murder every person who think they're being a video game celebrity by dancing in Limsa all day while people are stuck waiting to get to play because the NEETs have been online since the servers went online
Is Limsa still packed? I've been doing MSQ the entire time so I haven't checked Limsa at all.

Why the fuck are people still dancing in Limsa during early access?

Because they are always there, every server seems to have no lifers who just spend all day there emoting

The only comparable I can think of is Vanilla WoW launch, but that was fraught with a lot more issues (servers constantly crashing, tons of lag, etc.)

There have been other releases that have had queues and login issues (New World comes to mind, but also virtually almost any WoW expansion) but nowhere really on the scope we're seeing with XIV.
