I'm just gonna say this:
I didn't think they'd top Shadowbringer. I think I'm being proven wrong once again, even with the cutscenes being much, much longer this time around. I can see the Stormblood parallels here, but this here is what Stormblood should have been.

I'm only up to the Garlemald section so far, so this may still change.
Major pluses:
- The higher budget really shines this time. Even minor NPCs are voiced, and it just lends itself much better to gravitas they're trying to import. If you were hoping to see more of that crazy bitch Sadu, well, she's fucking back. Lucia, and a few other previously unvoiced side characters gets a VA as well, which was a pleasant surprise.
- The story, I feel, is very well paced so far. It looks like they learned from their prior lessons and didn't overstay their welcome, nor left things hanging. The Indian island arc, for example, lasts only 2 levels (surprisingly), but there's a definite start, middle (dungeon) and end. Contrast that with how Ala Mhigo was handled in the SB, where we get told to fuck off by Zenos and then there's simply no resolution while we fuck around in Doma.
- Aesthetics. Each area so far feels different, very vibrant. Indian island is cool. Sharlayan andRapture Labyrinthos epitomises the Greek aesthetics. Even the ruined capital city of Garlemald has a desolate beauty in it.
Pluses:
- Garlemald. I know ITT some people were complaining how the big bad evil empire were never given a chance to humanise themselves. I have to say EW has mostly done the heavy lifting on this end. Even those who are unsympathetic, you can at least understand where they're coming from, even if it feels a tad forced. (Fuck do you care about pride when you're starving and cold? But maybe that's just how people are.)
- Solo duties. I bet this will be a divisive one, considering the multiple FORCED STEALTH section we got, but I think they were a nice diversion compared to the ones you got earlier. The Thancred one in particular, was very Metal Gear-esque. I wonder if they got hold of Kojimbo or something.
- Class changes. While they didn't fix some classes as I hope, the QOL changes to the jobs I do play is very good, and fixes the jank they had earlier. (BRD having to apply their DOTs just to get any use of their songs during mob pulling, SCH's fairy being extremely jank and casting spells with a delay). I can't say for the other jobs yet but it looks like they do an across the board QOL improvement for the rest as well.
Minuses
- Server queues. I think enough has been said about this.
- Cutscenes. Ho boy. They can really drag now. Expect multiple "Several cutscenes will play in succession etc etc" notices. You have been warned.
