It brings me slight joy that the devs remembered "wait, Cloud wasn't always super broody, he used to be a wiseass and occasionally funny".
Considering the guy is basically a teenager mentally in the body of an adult from the Jenova experiments, mixed up with memories from Zack which caused him to be gaslighted into thinking that he became the hero he pictured himself as a kid.
The devs put it as Cloud being dorky and cool. The way he composes himself to appear cool which is part of his characterization in the OG is at times childish/dorky and the other characters notice it. When he slips up on that facade he comes across as more of a genuine person that is cool/funny/wiseass which you see more and more as you progress though both the OG and remake games.

A lot of the characterizations of FF7 people base off extended media which became more moody versus what the OG game had. People complain that they entirely changed all the characters personalities but I don't think that's the case. Barret is another character people seem to remember his characterization in the opening of the game thinking he's a total hardass that never softened up, or showcased soft spots outside interacting with his daughter.

Oddly the original Remake design they showcased for Cloud was going to eliminate his characterization along with his look, and tapping more into the AC style of Cloud. With the early flashbacks it's a bit of a mixed bag but strangely it follows the beta FF7 story before they wanted to have unveiling Sephiroth mimic how Jaws was built up. There are actually quite a few scenes in Remake that follow the beta story. The remake series has its issues with valid complaints, but I don't think it's a total botch job. It doesn't come across like it is seeking to invalidate the original game which is good.

>Make good game
>Make more of the same game in the same engine, released 2 years later
When'd this stop being the case? Why must each game be a step up?
Because why waste time and people making good games that will guarantee a profit when you can make mega projects that have 50/50 chance for a big profit and mobile/gacha that has 10/90 chance to make insane profits? Sqaure Enix and other big studios died spiritually in the PS3 era chasing this mindset. FF15 and FF7 trilogy are overproduced shit done by people who forgot how to make games and instead make tech trailers and reiterate on already existing stories since they can't write their own.

When'd this stop being the case? Why must each game be a step up?
And that's what the Re trilogy is doing, using the same engine and having over 90 percent team retention each game. Between this and offloading their overseas branches, they're trying to get back to how games should be made. Capcom shifted to more along this model too, and Western companies are following suit. Xbox is dumping a bunch of dead weight foreign studios just this week since they're floundering so bad.

Yay! A FFVII Remake thread finally! Posting here before reading through the (currently) 6 pages as I have a lot of thoughts on this trilogy and a few predictions on how this thread will progress:

- Will Sebbywebz be mentioned?
- Will this thread descend into the OG v Remake catastrophe that is Reddit and X?

My FFVII story is as an OG. Played it over the holidays with my partner and tbh we didn’t leave the tv except to sleep and shit it was the most engrossing, heartbreaking and intricate story and graphics we’d ever experienced in a game. Made me an FF fan for life and yes, I too cried at that scene. We all did.

The series has gone a bit wonky since FFX but I’ve been excited about the remake series and have watched a lot of the gameplay and commentaries on it. Never played it however until THIS WEEK when I finally could ignore real life and expenses enough to treat myself to a Switch 2 and the first two games. I’m playing it handheld as I have terrible eyesight but as a first impression of the console and game it’s wow.. I bloody love it. It’s early days yet but omg it’s beautiful.

As to the future? I mentioned Sebby above as he’s probably the most prominent critic of the new series. His comparison YT videos between the old and new are spot on (especially the scenes with Cid and Nanaki’s father) and I can’t argue with the points he makes - the scene in Cosmo Canyon in the OG was possibly more heartbreaking than Aeriths and Rebirth couldn’t come close to replicating that emotional beat. Seeing that annoyed me, as well as other parts he has shown. Will there be a difference between seeing it and playing it though? I’ll see.

Despite hours and hours of reading and watching and thinking about the new version I’m determinedly going into this (game and thread) with an open mind. I played the OG a couple months ago as I’ve been planning to make this purchase for a while and I know part of my giddiness? is the new graphics and machine - it’s like seeing these old photos of the past suddenly new and in colour, they have new life and it’s amazing. But I am worried about the bloat. I don’t want to spend hours and hours in Midgar I want to be out there in the open world and we don’t even get the Highwind until game THREE?!?!

Anyway, enough rambling. Excited to hear what you gooners, haydurs and normal people have to say. My initial toe in the water impression is all good so far (how bloody adorable is Marlene!) and I’ll leave it there. Thanks for the thread OP!

Anytime anyone brings up Tidus people just think about that stupid laughing scene. But outside of that he's actually pretty good protagonist. He actually has some decent character growth during the game.
I dunno why, beyond the cringe of the laugh the entire point is that they are fake laughing to build up bravado for how scared both he and Yuna are.

The entire context of the scene sort of nullifies people's dislike of it.

I was worried with remake how this eould turn out, im about 3/4 through rebirth and I'm really enjoying it. I dont mind the combat ( im not a retard who hates turn based ). I dont usually say this but the combat is more fun to watch, (especially watching Tifa move like she should and dolphin kick shit into oblivion.

The music is amazing, but to be honest that's expected.

I gotta say its been awesome seeing the characters fleshed out more and im glad they havent tried to hide the original's cracktastic parts. Assuming they dont fuck up rebirth's ending (which it sounds like they havent) and liberation follows the same, i could say im happy with this, despite my general distaste with remakes and remasters.

Also Tifa best girl, Aerith is a ho. Come at me.

that is kinda what they intended, Tifa looks like your typical girl of ill-repute and even runs a shady dive bar, but is the ultimate ah-shucks girl next door sweet girl, Aerith literally sells flowers and is your typical maiden of virtue in appearance but is much more of a naughty girl in personality.

anyways, just be happy you got it, I was promised a Final Fantasy 9 remake and got nothing, and will likely never get anything.

I gotta admit, 9 is better than 7 to me (but 6 the best.) I feel like id have been way more excited for a 9 remake than 7, especially since 9 hasnt gotten anything other than yhe base game (AFAIK). Steiner was my fave in that game.

Blame the launch of the PS1 and everyone forever remembers 7 as the GREATEST GAME EVAAHHH because it was their first fucking RPG, so it forever rings out in people's nostalgia.

its absolutely a fucking gem of a game, but by the time 9 came out, it wasn't a fantasy-tech world with a brooding swordsman, so it got marks against it, despite it being pretty much the most timeless of the PS1 RPG's.

the remakes are a downgrade from the original in almost every way. the new graphics are pretty but that's about all the praise I have for them. Nomura completely ruined the story of the original with all this stupid ass parallel universe bullshit, the ending of the first game is such a bait and switch given how it mostly follows the original game and then nosedives straight into retard nonsense at the end of the motorcycle chase. I was in fucking disbelief the whole time, it still pisses me off that I can't refund that piece of shit game. Rebirth absolutely massacres every key story moment in the midgame, Sephiroth is made into a smug anime fuckboy villain instead of the creepy ass malevolent phantom he's supposed to be. Aeris' death is completely robbed of its impact. even something as simple as the one-off scene where you discover the corpse of the Midgar Zolom, the writers couldn't stop themselves from ruining everything by trying to pad it out with anime melodrama. even the gameplay is worse IMO, the simplicity of ATB has aged quite well while the remakes' button-mashy action combat feels crusty and derivative from the very beginning. also, the remakes' overly orchestral soundtrack sounds far more generic than the original despite the cheesy lo-fi MIDI instrumentation. Final Fantasy is fucking dead, none of the people at Square know how to design a decent single player JRPG anymore.

god I fucking hope Square never revisits any of the other classic FF games. if they do to 8 or 9 what they did to 7 I might be inclined to fedpost. if you want to play the definitive version of 9, check this shit out: Moguri Mod is a massive community-made visual remaster of the game, and is delivered through the Memoria Engine, which is a community-made rewrite of the entire game engine with a built-in mod loader. Memoria includes shit like increased framerate caps (up to 120 FPS), improved camera controls, UI fixes, autosaving, 64-bit support, and more. Moguri with the engine set to 120 FPS looks fucking awesome.

I’ve only play remake and not Rebirth. The ending and major change to the story at the end of the game is what put me off from playing the second game. Who decided to change a major part of the story?

I've beaten 9 seventeen times, I'd be fine to see what whacky shit they come up with for a remake, it doesn't change the original for me at all, but it won't happen, its never gonna happen.

the thing I really hate about AAA remakes of old games is how the remake essentially replaces the old version. gaming was a much more niche hobby in the 90s. despite its popularity, the original FF7 has much less exposure than the remakes, and it's very crusty by modern standards. now that there's a prettier version of the game with modern gameplay on modern platforms, why bother with it? insisting on the original marks you as an annoying autist who can't get with the times. so there's no pushback against this shit, these publishers get a green light to ass fuck the classics because the modern gaming audience is almost entirely nigger cattle. watered-down mediocre garbage becomes the new standard and everybody thinks it's great. this brings a bunch of retards into the fandom that just shit everything up, like how the average modern Doom fan thinks DOOM 2016 is the peak of the series, or the modern Zelda fan is really just a fan of Breath of the Wild, and most modern FF fans haven't played anything before XIV. the enslopification of the foundational works of gaming is miserable to watch, and made all the more awful by how enthusiastically everyone cheers for it.

Welcome, hope you have fun discussing it into the lead up to Revelation. Just ignore any haters and give them hats if they can't bring anything deeper than 'bait and switch' etc. instead of actually expounding on their reasoning for a discussion. It's been fairly quiet so far, I'm sure it'll be worse near relase.

As for Sebby he can suck a dick, but I also hate a lot of other FF content creators like NSP and Babyseal, so eh. Glad the stick in the muds have somone to go to though.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation | Director Has Beaten the Game 40 Times and Cried Every Single Time
We spoke with Naoki Hamaguchi about themes in the new game

Apparently, players should have their tissues ready for *Final Fantasy VII Revelation*. In an interview with Omelete, director Naoki Hamaguchi said he has already beaten the game from start to finish more than 40 times—and that one particular scene made him cry every single time.

"There's this scene that's quite central to the story of Final Fantasy VII, where Cloud goes through a moment of introspection and discovers his identity, and how it fits in with Zack and Aerith. I think the way we portrayed that in Revelation turned out really well, and we can't wait for fans to see it," said Hamaguchi.

Of course, he kept the details of exactly what happens at this moment a mystery, but he didn’t hide how moved he was while watching the cutscene:

“I’ve beaten Revelation about 40 times, and every single time that introspective scene with Cloud has made me cry,” he added.

Fans of the original game already have a good idea of Cloud’s origin story and his connections to Zack, but given the narrative discrepancies that intensified with Rebirth, it’s quite possible that the new game has some surprises in store for players.
Unfortunately, it will still be quite a while before we know for sure.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027 and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Glad to hear I'll be reliving my sobfest from the ToA segment again.

Can't recall where, but in terms of enshitification I saw a post saying something similar along the lines of, "No matter how remakes or trannies injecting woke shit into the OG stories, we can still enjoy them forever and thank fuck for that." That really stuck with me.

I don't entirely agree with this, but I can see what you mean.
The way I see it is the people who call others "Boomers/Uncs" or whatever for preferring the OGs or at the very least suggesting people to try them were never going to give them a chance anyway - with or without graphical overhauls - and if they want remakes instead, then so be it. Fuck'em. It's their loss anyway. I never got the impression those types really cared to begin with or were looking to have their minds changed because vidya these days is more of a sport for posers to root for something to piss off the opposition or ragebaiting for a hit of updoot dopamine.

But the people who do give them a try end up coming out of it having a greater appreciation for the source material over the adaption and I've seen plenty of people like that, especially from Zoomers and even Alphas. Is it enough to stop remakes? No, at least not for a long time, but from what I've seen, more and more people are really getting tired of them because it's so predictable and the majority of the time they just don't live up to expectations or what made the OGs so great. Sooner or later the memberberries milking will come to a head. At least I hope so. Also some Remasters and Re/Decomps - as slow as they are to develop - exist, which is always a good thing.

Última edición:
What annoyed me was the NPC characters. (They're my favorite part of jrpgs ironically) The system of them saying something as you walk by is fine. Easy. But then it happens over and over every time you pass (Remake is especially bad about this).

Although this goes back starting with 13 I believe? It is nice that everyone is voiced.

But I'm most intrigued about Yutai.

my bad, I didn't think I needed to belabor the point. the ending of Remake, in which Sephiroth cuts a hole in reality so you can kill the timeline guardian of the multiverse was one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever seen in a lifetime of gaming and infinitely more retarded than anything in the original. up to that point, the game had been generally decent - I didn't feel that the game ever fully managed to justify its existence, and it made many of the characters (i.e. Heidegger) dumber by giving them dialogue that didn't need to exist, without having the writing talent to make something interesting out of it. but I didn't really have any significant complaints about it, and enjoyed the extra time with the AVALANCHE crew, and some of the new characters they added to pad out the cast, like Marle. but then, in the last hour, the game gives you the finger, snorts a mountain of coke, and blasts off into the retard zone with no remorse, doing a complete 180 on the hope that this will be a mostly faithful adaptation, or even an experience you can survive without having neurons sand-blasted off the surface of your brain. that's the bait and switch. is that enough expounding for a discussion, faggot?
