No bail outs for the farmers only for banks.

Cross-posting myself from the Clarkson's farm thread (probably should have been the other way around, but whatever).

Tangential to Clarkson, there's a bunch of UK farmers who vlog about their experiences. They've been getting a big boost in popularity, thanks to Clarkson's farm, and they're (politely) screaming about the effect that govrnment policy is having on their livelihoods. A good example is Harry's Farm, which is apparently just down the road from Clarkson.

This video goes over how stupid the government's food strategy is. tl;dr they effectively want to reduce food production even while the population of the country is growing at an unprecedented rate. He points out that much of the land currently used for meat rearing is entirely unsuitable for anything else. Clarkson probably won't touch on this stuff, because it doesn't make for great TV compared to piggies and fights with the planning committee, but just by making his farm series he's giving people like this an avenue to get the word out in ways that they couldn't have before. I find it fascinating.

Farmers protests are in abeyance at the moment, because there's actual work to be done, but I reckon they'll kick off again in a month or so.

Quick summary.

Farmers are protesting in the UK against Starmer's ridiculous new inheritance taxes, which seem designed to force smaller farmers to sell off land and drive them out of business. One farmer has already taken his life after the tax was announced; his children believe he did it to ensure they inherited before the new tax was implemented.

There was a protest on the 19th in London, attended by Jeremy Clarkson, who has become a huge advocate for farmers in recent years. A second protest happened yesterday inn several parts of the country. English farmers slow-drove around Dover, impeding traffic but not totally blocking it. Then, last night, Welsh farmers blockaded the port of Holyhead (archive, though I'm having trouble getting the video right now), which is the largest ferry connection to Ireland. Very little of this has been reported on the news.

There are farm protests in Germany and France ongoing. I can't find much video and there's very little reportage about it. Just talk on xitter. I don't think it's going to slow down now.

It’s all momentum and inertia. Right now the British have a lot of inertia that holds us back. We aren’t by and large a people who chimp out until a certain point. The telly still works, stuff’s expensive but nobody’s starving. But people are starting to talk about stuff in ways that surprise me. If the ruling classes had any wit at all they’d see this is a very dangerous state we are in. It’s still cold and shitty weather. If there’s an energy crisis this winter things may get bad. Otherwise wait for spring, for the Rwandan stabber trial, and for whatever dirt there is on starmer to come out. There will be a point where things pop off. I think it’s inevitable. The only question is whether it’s us reminding tyrants about liberty, or the caliphate getting installed.

There was less than 600MW between available energy production and demand on thursday night. Wind was light, so the turbines were barely cranking out 2GW (out of 30GW+ installed), and even this was only salvaged by bringing conventional generation online edit: pardon me, bringing the Viking interconnector with Denmark online, which was meant to be down for maintenance. One small generator tripping offline would have seen half the grid collapse.

It looks like it's going to warm up again for the next few days, so they've had a reprieve, but if we make it through this winter without a major blackout, I'll be very surprised. "Renewables" do not perform in the winter when we need reliable energy. The UK is currently importing energy through the Ireland East-West interconnector, and I think also through Moyle, both of which were only ever expected to export. That's how bad it's become.

This is the first I've heard about local councils taking any position against the government. It's all been reported as just farmers, but if local governments are actually starting to agitate about it, then it's setting up an interesting conflict. It's unusual for local councils to hold votes on motions like this.

Excuse the double post. The "day of unity" is starting off. Looks like there's close to 50 protests or "events" kicking off around the country. Not a huge amount of media coverage, but it has made the ITV website.
