The only game I still didn’t know what to make of is DQ7 because it’s such a rabbit hole. There are 3 versions and each have thier highs and lows.
From what I understand Reimagine is led by a guy who never finished the tutorial of the OG which really speaks for itself .
I've played all 3.

VII PSX - has a very simple but straightforward English translation and the pixel art is timeless. Much slower paced, especially in the beginning, but I think it fits the game well.

VII 3DS - modern DQ localization. Little censorship or alteration of costumes. Changed the vocation system to where only the basic vocation skills are permanently unlocked. Has a few major glitches that you'll want to keep an eye out for as they'll completely softlock your game.

VII Reimagined - modern DQ localization but amped up to 11 (even as a DQ localization defender, I found it too much at various points). Character costumes (especially for one character) have been altered for modern sensibilities. The vocation system has been reworked to be more like an FF job system. Multiple side story threads are outright gone. Monster selection has been reworked and a lot of monsters that had unique sprites/models are now genericized. If you find DQ7 intimidating because of length, this is the version to play but otherwise I can't recommend it.

tbh I'd say just play the PS1 version on an emulator. Maybe grab the strategy guide from internet archive as there are some hard stops that'll slow you down unless you specifically know the trick.

I am honestly shocked, I was considering the 3DS version because I thought it is the middle ground between PlayStation and the demake. I thought there was no way for glitches to be here but here we are.
I really appreciate your insight. I was hesitant to play the Playstation version because it’s one of those “buy the guide, goy” but I will just download it.
Btw I take it there’s no mod - such as cutting down loading time or such - for the PSX version, correct?

It does not have significant load times.

I don't think it really needs a guide, the game takes place of a series of small vignettes so its not hard to know what to do next. You do need to check everywhere for shards but just make it part of your exploring. If you get stuck a few hours in there's a witch that tells you where to find missing shards or you could reference a list.

I'm not up to date on the mods for VII PSX, but you shouldn't really need anything for the load times. It's low-res pixel graphics with a pretty spartan selection of samples for the music. I think the game might load almost all of the assets for an area when you enter because there's not a noticeable delay getting into or out of battles.

The 3DS version also has an unfixed memory leak in the core game loop which causes the game to lag like crazy after a few hours and even crash.

Looking at the fanarts … yes now I remember why he looked familiar
He looks like Nanashi from Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse
Shit, i kinda see it too. The way the spiky hair looks is kind of different, since Nanashi's was more slanted to the left.
On one hand, this is quite concerning because it gave me Metriod 4 Prime vibe and you know how that ended up.
On the other hand, I don’t mind waiting. I started looking into DQ last January and I am basically this:
I ain't worried about it. I don't know exactly what happened with Prime 4, but i trust that Horii and his team won't fuck up and make a shitty game.
Honestly, I don't there's really a DQ game you can really call bad. At least for the mainline games.

Is this only in the localized version? I beat the JP version because I assumed it would never be released in English and never ran into this. I only put a few hours into it in English because the localization drove me nuts (and the menu lag without L2 cache forced on with a new 3ds was atrocious).

Why would you need a mod to cut loading times? That's basic shit in the settings of any emulator.

How can anyone have faith in XII being a fun game? It's going to have pink bubbles again, to guide you to the next plot point, maybe something even worse like a QuestHelper-esque arrow. There will be mandatory perfectly detailed maps that only turn off when you want to take a gay screenshot. You will either get fully healed after every battle or get showered in herbs and magic water. Stealing will be a 100% chance and it will rain armor and weapons in treasure chests explicitly marked on the ever-present map; consequently inns and shops have disappeared and gold is useless. There are only 10 new monsters, each with 12 palette swaps. All monsters will have their lips removed, not just the trolls, because fat lips are racist; consequently a Lipsy is now called an Ipsy. There won't be a casino because of CERO gambling retardation.

At least we're sure to have tons of costumes to play Barbie dressup! Yay! Don't forget to preorder for your level 99 boost with exclusive Liquid Metal Armour set for only $29.99! And a seperate pack of stat boost seeds for only $4.99 a dozen!

Faith no but I'm open to being surprised. Maybe they'll fix the gay localizations.

But I'm very content with the 8 mainline games I do like and nothing else, that's plenty.

It's less faith, more "I'm willing to give them a chance because they haven't pissed away my good will yet." As routinely disappointed as I am that my preferred form of escapism has gone mostly to shit, Dragon Quest hasn't managed to fuck the dog and give me a reason to be skeptical yet.

Am I buying it on release, fuck no, that's a lesson well embedded, but I'm willing to at least give them a chance.

A lot of stupid assumptions in that post.

What basis does any of your Chicken Little bullshit have in reality? Got some evidence to back any of it up or are you just being a massive faggot?

To be fair, an mere quarter of what he'd said isn't without precedent. Except for the casinos. Pokemon got rid of theirs due to an self-censorship spree. Everything else is either just generic JRPG that's been poisoning modern gaming for an while or DQ XI replacing inns and churches with those free campsites due to the setting.

You're not wrong at how bad some of it's gotten, but they haven't done boosts, and costumes are usually a LE thing... Ok, I guess the monsters game from a bit ago had some DLC that basically mimics live services only without the live services (a chest you can open once an hour, etc). I get the impression with DQM3 the online stuff was cut back significantly at the last minute, and those DLCs were all things that were the online part of DQMJ3P / DQM1 and 2's remakes. For exmaple DQM2 had a dungeon, might have been DLC maybe even?, that let you re-encounter monsters you already had.

As for DQ12, I'm on team Turn Based, if they go Action RPG (and the localization team at Square Enix USA apparently refused to talk about it when asked) it's the end of the main line series. It'll just be a shambling skinwalker at that point.

I genuinely think the faction inside of Square Enix Japan that thought Final Fantasy 15/16/7-0ideas were good ideas thought they could do the same thing to Dragon Quest as an escape route after FF had been wrecked, and them binning everything and starting over was them tossing out a lot of very, very stupid Globalized modern audience choices they were trying to push. Horii even alluded to that. "We had a long discussion about what makes a main line Dragon Quest game, a Dragon Quest game." That tells me they were fucking it up, BAD, behind the scenes.

Remember Back in November that they did a huge purge, including the globalist guy in charge of the Japanese side of localizations, the C-suite guy at SE USA that came from Blizzard to shit Square Enix, etc etc. I wonder how closely that aligns with DQ12's restart.

@HTTP Error 404 I can’t reply for some reason. Do we know if this will affect how DQ normally does localizations going forward, or does this just shield it from leftism?
You can quote long posts by highlighting what you want to quote and clicking reply or quote.

As for what this means, no idea.

The white guy who was supposedly under the Pink Haired Lunatic is now in charge of FF14's localization. So they didn't fire everyone. I think Dragon Quest's localizers were a different team, one based out of the UK, which they did to make sure it has a different "tone" than FF's localization. Supposedly the VAs for DQ games don't usually do vidya voice work, so... Again, different voice.

What I do think is happening is Square Enix JP discovered they were being fed a line of horseshit from the localizers and "global standards" guys.

For example, I guess the Square Enix JP leadership expressed shock that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did so well despite being turn based, because apparently they were told that Americans won't buy turn based games anymore. There was also that TGS 2024 interview with Horii where he mentioned offhand that Americans apparently don't use the term Male or Female anymore cause they're offensive, which resulted in a looot of Americans replying on Twitter that no, no one calls women "Type B Bodies." If you believe this line of thought then them trying to purge that interview from the Internet -- didn't work, the Americans found it and mirrored it where a threat of a Japanese defamation suit doesn't result in automatic surrender by hosts -- might have been the "Global Standards and Ethics" commie fags trying to defend themselves.

We've known for a while that the localizers were lying to the Japanese; some of the guys that were purged had bragged about doing so in as many words. If the Japanese branch keeps losing money to this crap AND they realize they're doing so because a bunch of communist freaks who don't believe in money but do believe in ~the message~ were lying to them, well.

But who knows at this point? FF14 returned to tradition, DQ12 returned to tradition. At this rate I half expect FF17 to be turn based or some FF6 or FF10-2 style ATB battle system.

Do you have actual autism? Everything I said was a comical, slight exaggeration of what already happened in Dragon Quest XI.
  • Pink speech bubbles tell you explicitly where to go and what to do. QuestHelper is an addon from WoW that just tell you exactly where to go and what to do. It isn't farfetched to think an optional arrow pointing you in the right direction will be added. They already think their players must be too stupid to explore on their own and talk to the right NPC for the next cutscene.
  • The map in XI CANNOT be turned off, unless some update changed that in recent years. You also automatically have the maps in the first place. The maps explicitly tell you where the shiny item respawns are after you obtain them. Real DQ games don't even have maps, but the ones that do like VIII at least makes you "earn" them in a treasure chest. The map will be probably turn off when you want to take a screenshot but who the fuck cares about screenshots?
  • You get fully healed after leveling up since VIII 3DS I believe, maybe earlier. And you get handed welfare Magic Water/Single Phials in XI, not to mention the full heal wells/fountains/statues right before a boss fight. Is it a stretch to heal the player after every battle? Maybe, but again, what I wrote is a comical exaggeration of how XI is already a baby game. For the record, the full heal right before Dhoulmagus also sucked.
  • Erik's Half-Inch trivialized stealing. The rates are absurd in comparison to Yangus and his scythe skills in VIII. 100% is, again, a comical exaggeration but who the hell knows. A 1/2 or 1/4 chance is extremely likely for common drops.
  • You barely have to buy weapons and armor in XI. If you find something in a dungeon or overworld you can give it a +3 in the fun forge and skip an entire tier of upgrades. There are camps with free healing in just about every region. You'd have to be a moron to sleep at an inn. Why do they exist still? Why not remove shops entirely with the insane item drop rates and abundant treasure? Did you even play XI? Gold was fucking useless and the next "logical" step in QOL additions is the removal of gold, shops, and inns.
  • XI didn't add too many new monsters that I can think of. For once I'd like to see a huge new bestiary without as many palette swaps. Bring back some fan favorites for regions/dungeons that fit thematically of course but new material is desperately needed. And Toriyama's death means nothing when I'm fairly sure he hasn't designed the monsters in many games, outside bosses perhaps.
  • The joke about Lipsy becoming Ipsy is because Boss Trolls had their lips removed (allegedely) for being racist caricatures of blacks. Obviously what I said is a joke and you would have to be incredibly autistic to take it seriously.
  • Like the other guy said, gambling has been removed from Pokemon to appease CERO and maybe EU regulations. I'm not sure about any specific laws there. DQ has already had female characters censored to keep the rating down. At least that's the excuse Enix gives. Bikinis are gone, why not gambling? Not farfetched at all.
  • The games have had really mild pre-order bonuses for the most part so it's a bit of a joke that they will have paid level boosts and exclusive items locked by DLC. Then again, all paid DLC is Jewish and the slippery slope isn't the fallacy it used to be.

Added this because how could I forget? XI made it easy as pie to skip every single monster encounter. You could run through entire dungeons without a fight, and in the overworld you trample shit with your horse. So forget what I said about adding news monsters, maybe nu-DQ will be a boss rush without battles in between. Why not? That's the logical conclusion of quality of life!
