This is another problem with all these shows, and franchises in other media, a lot of them end up with people working on them who do not care. They want to use a show, a game series, a film franchise, a comic title, etc. for their own ends, whatever they may be (pushing an agenda, using the franchise as a cudgel against whatever strawmen are bothering them this week, trying to show off how clever they are at 'subverting expectations', etc.) and when its completely wrecked, when the audience numbers have dropped into a sub-basement, when the ratings or the box office or the sales on the latest entries drop down steeply, a lot of these people just say, "Oh well" and move on to another job.
