There's still good iconic choices for the doctor. Hugh Laurie would make a great doctor and would be a breath of fresh air to have a doctor that's a hughge asshole. Rowan Atkinson actually a pretty solid choice as well. If they absolutely MUST go with a non englishman, Idris Elba would suffice in a pinch.

What's sad is that immediately after capaldi they had enough prestige that they could actually reasonably score any of these three.
Rowan Atkinson returning with his Curse of Fatal Death look and Matt King as the Master would be kino which is why we'll never get either.

It's been done.

Apparently RTD really loves Starfleet Academy, and was pissed of when it got cancelled. Or at least, that's what I heard on a Tardis Zone stream. So this "press release" isn't too far from where he planned to take it lol.
He loves the Kurtzman era of Star Trek. I believe RTD and Kurtzman wanted to do a crossover episode.

When did Dr Who turnedI don't care who takes the role next, I just want an older actor or actress. Someone with some gravitas.
Won't happen because one of the biggest "when did Doctor who turn to shit?" theories that people subscribe to, is that the hand basket started it's long trip to hell when Moffatt followed Smith up with Peter Capaldi and Capaldi ran off the female base who wanted an attractive young 20 something man to lust after.

At best you could possibly get Robert James Collier or Allen Leech, young middle age eye candy for women with daddy fetish issues but we probably will not see another Capaldi type actor as the Doctor unless the BBC goes full on desperate stunt casting. Because even with Moffatt wasting most of Capaldi's episode addressing the elephant in the room about the guy's age and Capaldi's run being considered a success for the most part, there is still substantial number of people who think it was a shark jump from which all the other problems flowed out from.

The problem wasn't Capaldi, it was Clara. People were willing to put up with her while Smith was around because they already liked his Doctor, but Capaldi became a good jumping off point because Clara was insufferable and they weren't invested in this new Doctor yet.

I'm somewhat of a defender of Clara's storyline, but even I would say it's only tolerable with distance - you would have had to have an enormous amount of faith in the show that they could resolve all the problems with her while the seasons were airing. I still do not think it was planned, at least not from the beginning, they just got really lucky they could look back and recognise that she should have gotten herself killed by behaving like she's the Doctor. When you know the conclusion, her seasons are much more tolerable (except still the whole "most important person in the Doctor's whole life because she threw herself into his timeline and actually directed him to pick the correct Tardis at the beginning").

When Matt Smith was announced people were commenting on his weird head shape and nobody thought he was particularly attractive, just odd looking. He definitely worked hard to win people over.

They also seemed to be doing something weird with Capaldi at the start that came across as trying to be an inversion of Matt Smith's thing of old man in a young body by having Capaldi ride around on horses and be cool with guitars and sunglasses -it just doesn't work. And after Matt Smith's last season which wasn't the best, a lot of people were just done.

If they were going to have a black Doctor, even for some woke reason, Elba would definitely bring some gravitas to the role, but another I think would have done was Mos Def. He was one of the only good things about that crappy Hitchhiker's movie he was in. Specifically, he fit in very well with the whole idea of Ford Prefect, an alien trying to fit in, but who clearly wasn't where he belonged.

Instead they picked. . .whoever the fuck that was, I forget.

Mos Def has no gravitas which the doctor role needs. Its more important than being wacky.

Season 9 gets propped up as Capaldi's best season (in no small part due to Heaven Sent), but I feel the character was at his best in his final season. Strong principles, a renewed love of humanity and much better companions than muh Clara.

If Clara disappeared after The Name of the Doctor and got relegated to cameos after she would be remembered as one of the better companions imo

That's surprising to me, Heaven Sent is good but season 9 is full of terrible episodes and dragged down further by Maisie Williams' constant presence and robotic acting. Season 10 is much better in every way.

I just had a wonderfully hopeful thought, if the Doctor is now bifurcating himself on regeneration back to old faces, there's hope we can have Michelle Gomez back as Missy.

So uh... Doctor Who might actually be dead?

No Christmas special this year and Russel T Davies is OUT.

Today we’re announcing an update on plans for the future of Doctor Who.

As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year. Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come.

After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.

The previously announced new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies is currently in production.

Details of the tender will be announced in due course.

The BBC retains all IP in Doctor Who. BBC Studios will continue to lead the global distribution of Doctor Who as well as licensing, consumer products, digital and immersive experiences on behalf of the BBC.

This is just a confirmation of what anyone with half a brain could perceive. Not a second of the Christmas special had been filmed meaning they're literally out of time to finish it by Christmas. The trades were already writing about the difficulty in casting since the titular role is now seen as radioactive. Just pull the bandaid off and formally announce its cancelation already.

Piss on the ashes and move on. There is straight up no way in hell they can salvage this shit after the past decade and a half
