Trump didn't do this out of any consideration or with a plan. AFTER he was elected he posted a threatening tweet. He was insulting him just days ago and the entire Republican machine geared towards devouring him. They were calling him a jihadist terrorist 24/7
They didn't consider that Trump is senile and hyper-egocentric. He doesn't care about anyone but himself, and he is increasingly incapable of acting deliberately, controlling himself for some purpose.

It is honestly a likable aspect of Trump that he immediately tries to be affable with those he meets. He can absolutely be an incredible charmer if he wants to be. It's a trait most successful politicians cultivate to some extent, but one that Trump really excels with.

The problem arises that he doesn't continue this when they're outside the room or really act on it to accomplish things with the person.

This came up routinely in Trump's first term where Trump would turn on the charm when meeting Democrats, making Republicans panic thinking Trump was showing his true liberal colors and blah blah blah, only for Trump to then go back to saying how awful those Democrats he met with were and that he'd never work with them on their ideas he praised.

It can make him come across a little schizophrenic or like he's doing a 180 constantly, but it's more that his gut reaction is to go charmer mode with people and it takes extreme circumstances for him to go against that.
