The situation would not be half as dangerous, if he was Russia's pal.

(1)He's de-facto demanding from Russia the exact same thing Zelensky is currently demanding from Russia: ceasefire along the current frontline. Zelensky frames it in different words ("immediate ceasefire before any negotiations"), but it is exact same shit.

(2)This demand is a complete non-starter. It will never be accepted. If Russia is ever pushed into situation where it would be acceptable (unlikely, to say the least, Ukraine's situation is demonsrably deteriorating year-by-year), it would instantly stop being acceptable for Ukraine. Btw, Trump can't actually force Zelensky to do anything, as long as the EU cabal guarantees the latter's personal safety.

(3)Trump therefore does not have any real carrots to influence Russia's position. The only remaining sticks after the last wave of attempts to block Russia's energy exports failed as miserably as the previous ones, is to either directly threaten war, or to heavily disarm existing US formations for the sake of supplying Ukraine. Doing either openly is not acceptable to American public.

(4)Therefore he's playing a retarded spectacle, using the threat of Tomahawk deliveries as a stick, and another public treatment of Zelensky as a miserable lackey in place of a carrot.

(5)The best-case outcome of this is Russians calling his bullshit, reiterating their demands for Nth time and going home. Nothing worse happens than yet another demonstration that US has no allies, only minions, and the war continuing on its course towards eventual Russian victory.

(6)The problem is, this "diplomacy" amounts to playing with matches in a powder storage. And the one doing the playing is a narcissist, who might decide to just make good on his bluff, after getting snubbed by Putin again, and deliver Tomahawks. Which might be seen by Russia as US entering the war directly in everything but name. I'm very much surprised that an all-out nuclear exchange between Russia and NATO hadn't started yet, but this is one of those events which can easily serve as the final trigger.

Trump has no real leverage against Putin. Their only option is to declare war themselves, which isn’t going to happen, or let Russia take over Ukraine. When they say that Putin was droning on about history, he’s saying that Ukraine rightfully belongs to Russia, that he’s playing the historical long game. Trump trolling by requiring Zelensky to wear a suit just shows to Putin that Trump is a clown. Trump keeps failing Putin’s little tests which is why he’s made zero progress.

Trump is an embarrassment on the national stage that I’m not sure any presidents have become, at least since World War II. Israel gave him a medal this week so he was flying high and Putin made him a laughingstock yet again. Russia is an entirely different beast than Palestine. And guys like Xi Jinping are paying attention too.

Went to No Kings for a bit. It was mostly unremarkable. Unlike the last one, this one was on the street, which made it very linear and made it feel even more crowded. I only spent a minute around the main stage; there was preacher going on about the Indians and the slaves and how this is holy land. I was overcome with fear of the divine and left. Then I spent some time people-watching in a shady spot near some horses; when they shat and left, so did I.

To address some of the narratives circulating on social media:
  • I didn't see any Antifa or ancom flags, even though they usually show up at every protest or rally. Miserable fucks even went to a Ukraine thing earlier this year. But I didn't see any, at least where I was hanging out. They might have showed up early and staked out better real estate, or they might have adopted another cause to avoid attention. The crusty-looking fellows I saw were all repping Palestine or troons.
  • There were some old people. And some young people. And some families with little children. Pretty good mix. But I wish they didn't bring the kids, the left uses lots of salty language on their signs.
  • Whoever made those inflatable costumes should be rich, but I think most of the costumes will be in landfills six months from now. There weren't as many Temu Pepes as I expected. Lots of sharks, axolotls, yellow chickens, and at least one eagle.
  • Some of the photographs/videos I've seen understate the size of the crowd. They were either taken at odd times, or they were outside the main body of the crowd, where people were just kind of hanging out. Also, there was a march; a still image of a march doesn't show the total number of people, just who was passing by at that moment. People were coming and going throughout the event, too.
I noticed a few other random things. The horses were very popular with the photographers, some of whom seemed to enjoy talking to the police but who knows how their photographs will be used. Lots of people brought dogs, too, and I really wanted to pet them but I controlled myself. There was some guy riding a bike around with a loudspeaker going on about Israel and Bill Clinton having sex with little goils, which felt very internet-adjacent.
