He didn't "barely win" by either metric. 306 to 232 electoral votes. The popular vote by like seven million votes.

If anything, Trump barely won in 2016. A similar number of electoral votes (304 vs 227 with seven not voting) but actually lost the popular vote by 3 million to Hillary, the world's least charismatic politician that's been the target of right wing drooling since the 90s.
