Genuine slab of fucking chocolate sludge all because of one ingredient missed. Ruin's a whole day worth of baking just for some good muffins and some jail cake that tastes like chocolate covered concrete. But this poses an intellectual question, what would you guys do if you didn't have any baking soda and already making some cake? I would've became an hero if I knew earlier :ow:

slab of fucking chocolate sludge
what would you guys do
Heat it up and spoon it over ice cream. Or blend it into a smoothie/blizzard. Or roll chunks of it into cake balls.

If it's still workable as a mass, you could roll out a thin layer of it and bake it again into a kind of brittle/bark.

I wanted to try a smoothie but it was so dense and tasted like, again, chocolate concrete that I don't think it would've worked. But that's not a bad idea, I'll keep that in mind if I do retard my cake again.

Interesting recipe if it called for baking soda instead of baking powder. I usually only see baking soda if you are using buttermilk instead of milk.
Baking powder is baking soda + a weak acid. If the rest of the ingredients are acidic (like buttermilk) you don't need to add additional acid to react with the baking soda. Sometimes you'll also see a combination of baking powder/soda if there's some acid but not enough for how much you need for leavening.

you can buy dried yeast, it has a shelf life of many months
And it's super cheap at that, little jar that lasts me most of a year only costs a couple bucks.
Yeast in sachets lasts even longer, but it's more expensive than buying yeast in a jar. Given that I only use yeast maybe half a dozen times a year, the sachets work out more cost effective (and less wasteful) for me.

Communists never run out of baking soda.
