It's kind of hard to judge based on what we know at this point. I remember when Futurama was announced, it didn't sound like it would be all that. And let's be honest, if you described The Simpsons in basic terms, it wouldn't sound like anything special (The dad's a lazy slob! The son misbehaves!).

There are only two points that really make me worry. The first is that there was that Futurama movie, Bender's Game, that was set in a fantasy world. While it was funny in parts, a lot of the jokes were pretty lame and obvious. The second is that the protagonist is "hard-drinking." Given that Rick & Morty, Archer, Family Guy, Bojack Horseman, The Simpsons and Futurama all feature major characters who are either heavy drinkers or outright alcoholics, I wish cartoon creators would come up with some new personality flaw.

Had The PJ's caught on, there'd be a lot more crack heads.

Huh I’m surprised that it seems to be at least different from the other two in some areas

Is anyone else a bit thrown off by the quality of the show's animation? It's not that it's awful, but after years and years of being accustomed to The Simpsons and Futurama's animation quality, I did a double take upon seeing the trailer.

Also, has anyone noticed that the human characters in Disenchantment have five fingers? IIRC, at one point during the development of Futurama, human characters were going to have five fingers. The remnant of that idea can be seen in this screencap from the very first episode: After doing a little research, I can't seem to find any evidence supporting my claim except that the five-fingered guy on the famous "You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do" poster was apparently an animation mistake. Nonetheless, I thought that was an interesting tidbit.

One area in which this reminds me of The Simpsons is how the main characters are not voiced by the same ten people you hear in every other animated show. When The Simpsons launched, Nancy Cartwright had the most extensive voiceover background, but she wasn't really in the big leagues. I think that's one of the things that set The Simpsons apart from other shows at the time. It wasn't being polluted by the Hanna Barbera brigade. Compare that to Futurama that featured Billy West when he had probably hit peak saturation (though Futurama also had Katey Sagal, who had no major animation credits, and was John DiMaggio's big break before he became one of those ten voices).

I actually like the main character's design. It communicates that she's not your typical high-fantasy heroine. She's sort of like the female version of the reluctant hero, who is usually your average Joe. On the other hand, her goblin sidekick is genuinely awful. It's 90% Bart. They could have at least given him different colored clothes.

I think it was a nice idea to make her plain looking. (Kind of like the book, The Ordinary Princess.)

In a few interviews he gave during Comic Con, Groening said that the series will experiment more with continuous storytelling than The Simpsons or Futurama given the nature of the Netflix model. He also said that Netflix has been pretty hands off.
