Netflix has set the official premiere date for the upcoming Matt Groening adult animated comedy fantasy series “Disenchantment.”

The first 10 episodes will debut on Aug. 17. The series takes place in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland. It follows the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools. Netflix previously gave the series a 20-episode order.

The series will feature the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson as Bean, Nat Faxon as Elfo, and Eric Andre as Luci. Other voice talent includes John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman–all of whom have worked with Groening in the past–as well as Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery. Animation is being done by Rough Draft Studios, the same studio did the animation for Groening’s “Futurama.”

Netflix also released several first look images from the show, which can be viewed below.

Disenchantment” is produced by The ULULU Company for Netflix, with Matt Groeningand Josh Weinstein serving as executive producers.

Groening is of course best known for creating “The Simpsons,” which recently wrapped its 29th season on Fox. The series broke the record for the longest-running primetime television series in April with its 636th episode, beating previous record holder “Gunsmoke.” “The Simpsons” has already been renewed for a 30th season. Groening also created the popular animated series “Futurama,” which ran for four seasons on Fox from 1999-2003 before being revived at Comedy Central for three more seasons starting in 2009.

You literally have an infinite amount of ideas for a character, yet they make Bart and make him green.
Yeah, that blows. They should have gone for a different, more imaginative design. Looks more like something out of a "Treehouse of Horror" episode.

Though I'll be somewhat optimistic that this show might turn out decent.

Lost me at Eric Andre (dude has seriously never done anything funny) then again, It's a Netflix original so it was probably doomed to be shit from the start.

Forget who is doing the voice acting and the animation. The important question here is who is doing the writing for this? That will be the tell tale sign of whether or not this thing is worth a damn.

Bill Nye crawled up his own ass and convinced himself he was the savior of humanity. Unless Netflix puts the screws to Matt Groening to make black transsexual Muslim characters, he shouldn't come anywhere close to that.

Netflix greenlights this but turned down the Aqua Teen Hunger Force guys.

Gay
Given the amount of money that The Simpsons and Futurama have generated compared to Aqua Teen Hunger Force, I don't think there's a network or streaming platform that wouldn't choose Groening over the Aqua Teen guys.

It's being codeveloped by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein, who produced my favorite seasons of The Simpsons. Say what you will about Groening's contributions (or lack thereof), but he has a tendency to attract talented writers to his shows.

I love Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein! They did Mission Hill, one of my favorite animated series. And I love Eric Andre, Matt Berry, Rich Fulcher, and Noel Fielding!!!!

I’m a bit worried with how they are going to handle a female lead, because with Matt Groening, he either makes them too stereotypically feminine like Marge Simpson, or turns them into Wonder Women like Leela, or turns them into annoying mouthpieces where they are smart and perfect and no one appreciates them and they are always right like Lisa Simpson. Basically there is no middle ground with him. I also don’t want it to be a preachy “it’s hard being a woman” pandering thing like the Emoji movie. Just write the character like a human. And I’m saying this as a woman.

Also does anyone think the alcoholic thing is to capitalize on Rick and Morty a bit or is it just me?

I'm not sure if I'd say it's trying to piggyback off of Rick and Morty. Barney and Bender have been drinking for decades. I mostly wonder if Groening and crew will take advantage of the liberties Netflix provides, or if this deal was just a way to make a show without Fox trying to note it to death.

It seems a tad premature to tar this with SJW, particularly coming on the heels of Groening basically telling the Apu documentary guy to cram it sideways. Openly disagreeing with a PoC callout is near top of the list of "thou shalt nots" among those circles and I can't imagine Groening to be so stupid as to flagrantly bite the hand that he's expecting food from at this point.

If it were nearer the launch of the show it might work to drum up controversy, but 3ish months out is too far for buzz and too close for the people writing reviews to forget the grudge. I'm keeping an open mind.

Just because someone does a "subversion" of the Damsel in Distress trope, doesn't mean they are automatically SJW.
I think this will at worst just be another bit of an unimaginative "girl is going to do something badass" story, but with jokes similar to what you get out of Futurama. I mena come on. The main character herself looks less like a strawman liberal as Haley from American Dad and more like she is only now hitting puberty.

My bet is on her wanting to go on a great adventure and the first episode ends with her just saying "this sucks" cause as it turns out the situation is not as awesome as she thought it would be.
Frankly, my bigger issue right now is how bland the promo pic looks and I hope that when the first episode comes out it turns out there is more to the show than a girl who loks unfortunately like one of Leela's fellow orphans having grown up a bit, Bart after he did meth and what seems like an extra from Cuphead.

For anyone that might be doing it / even fucking considering it, I'd save calling something SJW for something that does deserve it, honestly (looking at you, Bill Nye & certain black-haired fatty...).

As for this show: Yeah, seeing the green fucker who looks like Bart does not inspire greatness; then again, none of these 3 MCs look like they inspire that. It's going to come down to the writing quality for me to truly give any fucks about this show once it comes out. Because the fact that this just looks like Futurama set in DnD world is not making this feel like my cup of tea (especially since I don't give a fuck about DnD, honestly.).

At least there's some writing crew here behind Classic Simpsons and the short-lived but awesomely done Mission Hill, so there is some hope to hold out in such an otherwise dreary setting, like this is implying to be. And once again, calling this SJW out of the starting gate, plus what Greoning recently said about the Apu "controversy"... that's a mistake - and that's FACT.

I actually like the main character's design. It communicates that she's not your typical high-fantasy heroine. She's sort of like the female version of the reluctant hero, who is usually your average Joe. On the other hand, her goblin sidekick is genuinely awful. It's 90% Bart. They could have at least given him different colored clothes.
