I've noticed that we've got threads on Dexter but not on Dexter as a whole, Dexter is a showtime original series based off of "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" (By Jeff Lindsay).

Dexter follows the life of Dexter Morgan, a blood splatter analyst by day, serial killer by night. The original run started in 2006 and ended in 2013 lasting for 8 seasons, with what was considered one of the worse series finales of all time, it was so bad that in 2021 showcase released Dexter: New Blood.

Dexter: New Blood, a sequel series that follows the events of the series 10 years after the fact with Dexter under the pseudonym Jim Lindsay hiding out in the fictionalized frozen small town of Iron Lake, the arrival of his son Harrison and Dexter's newest victim after 10 years threatens to throw his cover life out of balance. Also ending with a terrible finale that gets retconned in the series following Original Sin.

Dexter: Original Sin is a prequel series that was released in 2025, showing the early years of Dexter's start into vigilante killing with completely new actors with the only returning actor from the previous series being Michael C Hall as the internal monologue for Dexter.

Dexter: Resurrection is the continuation of the series after New Blood, set in New York. Resurrection follows our favourite ex-blood splatter analysis' survival post NB and discovery of his son's first solo kill coming into contact with an underground serial killer group lead by Prater (Played by Peter Dinklage) and his attempts to avoid his ex-coworker turned rival Batista who's realised Dexter was the Bay Harbour Butcher.

Resurrection is currently ongoing and as of this is up to it's 6th episode with there being 10 slated for the first season.

A Trinity Killer (Antagonist from Season 4 of the original series) prequel series coming with John Lithgow reprising the role to provide the internal monologue for Trinity, there's also rumours of a Lady Vengeance spin off coming (Lady Vengeance is a character in the new series played by Krysten Ritter that's literally just female Dexter but instead of serial killer she kills rapists)

I really liked most of New Blood and it was so jarring how rushed and poorly done the ending was. I'm glad they're continuing but the mistakes made there are so detrimental to Dexter's character that I'm worried how it can be addressed. You can't just ignore the fact that Dexter murdered an innocent cop with 0 provocation, it defies who he's been for 9 seasons.

NB suffers from the fact that it goes back into old habits after the third episode, and that Dexter never seems to open up to his son about anything, not a single mention of Dexter killing Trinity nor Harrison finding out that Dexter put Rita in Trinity’s crosshairs

NB is rushed, and it's frustrating it only has one plotline. I was hoping we'd get to see Dexter kill some dudes on the side before getting to bigger targets. Dexter seemed too chaotic and dumb compared to how his personality normally is in other Dexter material.

I searched for this thread to complain about how most fan theories are basically "Everyone secretly knew!"

The ending for season 8 was still a major miss. Will they even follow up on the police department characters in the original?
Pretty sure Angel Batista is confirmed to be in the new series Resurrections, the rest is speculation a lot of people want Quinn and Masuka to show up. Batita played a important role in New Blood too helping setup it's finale.

Supposedly there is a Trinity spinoff being produced

The first two seasons were a lot of fun. Doakes was funny and Dexter was doing the two things that defined him: killing and doing his best to blend in the society.
The third one was mostly dull. Does anyone remember the killer Latino gardener?
The fourth one was OK and should've ended there.
I suffered through the last four just so I could say that I did. The only good thing about them was Ray Stevenson (R.I.P.). Too bad he played a homo.
New Blood wasn't really an improvement. Harrison was a piece of shit and I didn't like that they changed the setting so radically. That season was as unnecessary as the new seasons of The X-Files. Nobody asked for this garbage.

I read the first two books and they are pretty bad. The language is even simpler than in the worst Stephen King books (mostly the new ones). I would recommend them even to big fans of the show.

I genuinely don’t think that’s an issue. Dexter has killed innocent people before. And the first rule of the code is “Don’t Get Caught." Dr. Vogel even admitted it was there to give Dexter a little wiggle room. Dexter didn’t want to kill Logan; he actually tried really hard NOT to. He had to get out to not get caught when Batista came. Don’t get me wrong, the finale was rushed. The ending would have been perfect if it had a few seasons’ worth of build-up, but with how it was done, it was rushed. I don’t think him killing Logan will be a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It also reminded us that Dexter is a monster, whether we want to believe it or not.

Man S4 is only okay?
I thought it was as good as S1 if not better.

It's been a while since I've seen any of the old seasons. If I remember correctly, S1 and S2 were a lot funnier (I think everyone remembers his bantz with Doakes) than S4. Moreover, he was consistently killing people and still only pretending to love Rita. In later seasons the writers stripped him of any traits that defined him.

I always thought season two sucked. It does the Bay Harbor Butcher investigation way too soon in the series and ultimately wastes it (I remember Michael C. Hall basically agreeing in an interview), kills off Doakes, and has that really annoying Lilah plot.

First season is amazing. Second season is ridiculous with Dexter's plot armor. The FBI finding blood slides and then not dusting them for prints was beyond idiotic. They give Dexter his own serial killer trophies to wipe clean of his prints and never suspect that the 'blood guy' kept blood. They also investigate Doakes for his background of being in the military and find it suspicious when there are literally thousands of spec-ops guys like him that become cops or FBI agents.

Meanwhile Dexter's background is completely ignored. The background of witnessing violent drug murders and having a brother who became a serial killer who dated Dexter's adopted sister. They also just ignore the mountain of evidence Doakes gives them on Dexter.

Miguel was great. The skinning killer fell flat and becomes worse and worse upon re-watches.
The fourth one was OK and should've ended there.
The writers wanted Dexter to die in the finale of the show. And part of that happening was the entire police force no longer trusting Dexter after so much crazy stuff happened to him over the last few years. No one would be convinced that he wasn't directly connected to Rita's death and others would flat out think he did it and framed the Trinity Killer. It would lead to his life spiraling out of control and then finally getting caught and getting the electric chair. Final shot would be him in the chair saying to the audience that all previous episodes were his narration of his life flashing before his eyes.

Instead Showtime didn't want Dexter to die because the show was by far their most popular one. So they made four more seasons. A prequel and sequel series. And kept things going and will likely churn out another decade of Dexter. They told the writers Dexter had to survive the finale which leaked to the public before the finale aired also. So everyone basically knew that Dexter would survive for a sequel.

Showtime hated when Dexter was portrayed as a bad person. So they had Lilah kill Doakes and Dexter kind of avenge him by killing her. Just like in the last season Harry is exonerated for making the 'code' and Dr. Vogel is responsible instead. So that they can whitewash Harry's character as well. They could never make Dexter a complete piece of shit like Tony Soprano or Vic Mackey.

Original Sin was fucking horrible.

The timeline is totally wrong, they retcon almost EVERYTHING and the characters are totally inconsistent with their personalities in the original show. Deborah is stupidly naive, Harry is just an asshat, and Dexter acts so weird that the whole concept of him being raised and programmed by Harry to pass as a normal, stable person nobody would ever suspect of being a serial killer goes right down the shitter.

Also the use of CURRENT YEAR speech in dialog set in the 90s is grating. Cops in 1993 would not be calling a dead hooker a "sex worker".

The only thing it gets right is that La Guerta is a toxic, careerist cunt.

Haha. I completely forgot about the leak.

What's your favorite dumb moment from seasons 5-8? Mine has to be the scene in which the cops wait for Dexter to arrive just so he can deface the mural before anyone sees it.

the wife is watching some ep on youtube, and the place they're at is described as a cheap pink motel in lauderdale
I pointed out how that really doesn't narrow it down and we had a good laugh

Dexter never needed more than one season, unless they were going to do the Breaking Bad thing and actually progress the story through to a reasonable conclusion. I tapped out at the end of S2 when the writers balked at the moral dilemma they'd created by having Lilah kill Doakes.

Shame you didn't stick around for the next two seasons, Dexter's chickens come home to roost and we actually get consequences for his double life
