Completely agree with the "deny your duty" aspect there. The argument he makes would be pro-abandonment in general. If it feels good for me it must be good enough morally for me to do.
I also don't even agree its a strictly left/right thing, and more a in-group/out-group thing or even just the bullshit "found family" vs. actual family. Modern people regardless of politics are far more willing to just toss family out in favor of people they have self selected as family, with lefties still the more likely of anyone to do that self selection. The amount of lefties I've seen create problems at home, then leave and go no-contact, is vast and ever growing. They "get it intuitively" because they have no respect for the institution that is the family and would rather opt for whatever is easiest and better for their current feelings. There are situations where it's moral to do this, but the amount of people who do it over pronouns or Trump or whatever, is insane and pretty vile.

They were the pioneers of the nuclear family, moving out at 18 and associated ideas, all of which contributed to atomization today.
