200 people at seatle salary rates means they are looking at 150 to 250k a year salary. If they are doing blended rate which is popular for big companies its about 100 dollars an hour when you include salary and benefits minimum.

200k times 200 (amount gonne be laid off) is 40 million a year in just payroll. Then you have building costs, legal, HR, taxes, server costs, and other expenses (if they are using modern enterprise dev tools like Claude or cloud hosting or even MS Word and Outlook that aint free). Then you have marketing costs (those streamers get kickbacks) and contracting costs for art, special stuff, qa/qe et cetra. Then also remember dei programs cost money both in running them and makes those 200 more like 150 to 100 actually productive employees, and at anytime at least 30 are planning to unionize and raise your costs higher.

Then remember that every place the game is sold is taking a percentage. Yes even the Playstation store. That business unit of Sony still has operating costs that Bungie needs to pay (prolly less than 3rd parties though)

This means that the game needs to pull in 80 to 100 million a year in revenue to break even, forget about making money. And Bungie struggles to release on a yearly cadence. They went over a year between Beyond Light and Witchqueen. Witchqueen and Beyond Light had sales between 2 and 3 million estimated. Same for final shape.

3 million puts revenue on selling the Final Shape expac between 150 to 300 million dollars for the final shape. Pretty good right? Except the profit was going to pay for Marathon and incubation projects. Except remember lots of people got a cut of that before the dollars hit Bungies books.

The knock out punch was Edge of Fate only sold around a million units at full price. 100 million. Before the company had pulled in 300 million. Suddenly the company went from being modestly in the black (but not impressive for 400 people) to deeply in the red. Anyone who looked at their books would know they were super soft to one bad release unlike Fortnite. This is why Microsoft bailed.

this speaks to a broader problem we have in the West, Make-Work Jobs.

they are necessary, but insane, we have tons and tons of jobs that pay really well, but they are pointless, they exist to keep everything afloat.

bafflingly, important jobs are heavily scrutinized, every bit of labor cost is weighed, every hour you work is eyeballed with contempt, as a Professional Meat Cutter, every aspect of my employment is like a battle with the company that needs me to keep an important part of their stores functioning, yet the people above my Store Manager work completely pointless jobs and make 5 to 10x my pay, and no one every gives a fuck what they do, or don't do.

the sheer disparity of the Make-Work jobs and their pay and comfort levels and lack of scrutiny to mine is infuriating enough that I wish all of it would be destroyed.

Early advice i got in software was to id if the people you are talking to need the shit to work or need the shit to exist.

People who need the shit to exist means there is a million product/project managers. Burned out devs who only stay on because they know how business critical things work, and new people being forced to learn arcane and likely non transferable skills. All this gets expensive and creates organizational debt on top of the tech debt.

Destiny was almost certainly at that point, and it needed a D3. Once too much shit gets done to a codebase it collapses. Open source has autists that dont get paid. Paid for products have timelines and "just make the shit work".

Marathon was newer and i can guarantee you the internal pros reported to Sony were talks about how much cheaper and easier to develop and maintain Marathon was compared to Destiny. And its very likely the truth. All the people who needed shit to work probably left the company or moved to the Marathon project. In their dev stack ranking the Destiny people are almost certainly below the Marathon people.
