technically they already did that, Felwinter is copy of Rasputin that died, got Guardian'd and Rasputin spent years trying to kill him.
The writers tried to make him look like a ass for that but I can understand Rasputin's logic. Felwinter was a rogue asset at that point. A walking authenticator that could access any warmind facility and Golden age system. If captured or compromised he could put all of Rasputin's bunkers and other assets at risk. With no way to directly communicate or interface with Felwinter he went with plan b, eliminate the rogue asset/potential vulnerability. Too bad the D2 writing team sucked ass and couldn't figure out how to make it a compelling story, outside of the "my dad is a asshole" trope.

Im a destiny lore nerd, printed the grimoires and bound them. There's so much that could have been done between RoI and D2. It's a shame. I had really cool theories about SIVA and it's interactions with the hive. How it might bypass their taboo of necromancy or by corrupting it how it might allow a hive God to simulate oryx's ability to "take". Shame

I'm not a huge Destiny lore nerd but I will always hate Bungie for what they did to Rasputin. Playing Destiny 1 he was always this enigmatic figure. We knew what he was built for but it was never clear what his current objective was. What was he still capable of and can he be trusted. I loved that unease and mystery around him. It was grimdark in a sense because it seemed like whatever Rasputin's goals were, he had the balls and the means. He was willing to make amoral decisions if it meant humanity's survival and that includes being willing to shoot the Traveler if it even tried to escape.
This is an aside, but I fucking hate live content games for how they destroy your memories of something. If anyone remembers D1 Beta/Vanilla, there were only a couple Rasputin lines coming from warsats in the early story missions. His voice was genuinely menacing, and even by RoI his voice had been reimagined into a very standard booming Russian voice. It's hard to even find clips of this, because content churn means your enjoyment of a world is something to be gaslit out of you so you consume more product.

Edit: Found a clip of his old voice
Edit 2: Found a better one

That wasn't good enough for Bungie. They kept trying to humanize him. A galaxy spanning machine can't recite their quirky lines. It also requires effort to write complex non-human characters and God forbid we write anything interesting. So they made him gay, put him in the EXO suit so he could talk, just so they could kill him off. They knew they wrote themselves into a corner, that if Rasputin was strong enough to wound and contain the Traveler how was the Darkness supposed to have any chance?
It's worse than that. The early, early version of D1's story had Rasputin as an Exo (not a copy, literally transferred himself) and you'd have to go rescue him from one of the Hive or pyramid ships, I'm having trouble remembering. I had a friend who live tested early alpha builds and he described it to me, and though I initially doubted him, my doubt was wiped by (I believe) a Polygon article that backed him up.

So it's worse not because it's stupidly executed (it was), but because it was lifted from a story they threw away and then stupidly executed anyway. These niggas were out of ideas and fucked up stealing ideas too!

This Rasputin reminds me of that creepy (fake) ARG video that came out before Destiny 1 that almost eerily tied into Destiny’s lore. It was oozing with atmosphere, accidental or not, and the image of the Exo (turned out to be a marathon screenshot heavily edited) hanging like a crucified Jesus is seared into my brain, it’s so fucking cool. God the series was going in such a mysterious, grimdark direction.

And then fucking TRANNIES GOT A HOLD OF IT.

Edit: found it. Watch it. It seeps with atmosphere and lovecraftian horror. It fits marathon more than Destiny honestly. Now, granted, it seems to be all a hoax and a complete guessing game by a fan excited for D1, but considering how much Bungie steals for their games stories, they should’ve fucking stole this instead of some trannies shitty Cyberpunk art.

If you remember the room that you fought Oryx in in the Regicide mission, over to the right side of the room is a weird metallic structure that seemingly serves no purpose and doesn't fit the Hive aesthetic at all. This was initially where we were supposed to find Rasputin, floating in the middle of these pylons. When the Dreadnaught was delayed from the base game for The Taken King, they never got around to deleting it, so it's still there.

One more little trivia tidbit: this very early concept art was supposed to be Rasputin's Exo form. What could have been...

And a different one I haven't seen before, apparently done during production on Warmind (IIRC Vicarious Visions helped out with that). Maybe a little overdone, but it would have been nice for Rasputin to be more of a character than just a distant presence that barely showed up before they unceremoniously killed him off.

it made sense, also Rasputin till the very end near his own death, didn't view Guardians as humans, which they kind of aren't, they are more like revenants of light that think they are human, but can be made mortal once again with the death of the ghost.

I'd probably try and drop satellite's on those too if I didn't understand them and they were a threat like Felwinter could have been.

The traveler doesn't "like" us anymore than a castle appreciates its walls. Rasputin crippled it and forced it to make a call, bet it all on humanity or try to run with a limp. It put everything on "humans" and it's been a winning bet so far. But during witchqueen it proves that it's not "loyal" only to us. It was more than happy to create hive lightbearers to hedge it's bets. At the end of the day the Gardner and the Winnower have a bet and their pieces are going to each move respective to each ones gambit. Right now humanity plays a role but we might not always.

Also all life isn't extinguished, WTF? The cabal have an empire, the vex have a home system locked out of time and there's several rogue human colonies that survived beyond the reef that still exist in hiding.
I'm pissed seeing what I missed out on, more pissed that it was flushed down the drain for gay marvel quirk chungus quippy bullshit.

I haven't played D2 since a year or so after launch. They just removed the original opening for the Red War where you're left to die in the woods? I can't imagine having the will to keep up with this knowing Bungle could just take your game away for what I assume were bullshit reasons.

Iirc both D1 Sleeper Simulant and Warmind DLC lore had him designating Guardians as a resource that he should arm through IKELOS.
This is a CENTRAL ASSETS IMPERATIVE (secured/CONFERENCE)

This is an INTERNAL ALERT.

Number of exterior defense breaches has increased by 400% in the past year. Current campus defense protocols unable to keep up with new demands.

Operation MIDNIGHT EXIGENT is NOT YET COMPLETE. Interim response necessity is IMPERATIVE.

Hypothesize that resource GUARDIANS may be leveraged to compensate for CDP inadequacies.

Reassign 12 percent of COSMO assets to new directive: declare IKELOS.

I am calling VOLUSPA and extracting subroutine DVALIN FORGE, to be modified and recompiled to comport to MIDNIGHT EXIGENT parameters.

I am inserting the modified DVALIN FORGE-2 into IKELOS and compiling for immediate implementation.

Execute short hold for partial shutdown and reactivation.

STOP STOP STOP V55NNI900CLS003

While looking for this entry I ended up reading Rasputin lore and grimoire for half an hour, I miss the nigga :(

I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone.

They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn.

Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT.

Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?

I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well:

IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins.

I am made to win and now I see the way.

Them making Saint 14 and Osiris gay for each other always pissed me off. In Destiny 1 they constantly referred to each other as brother in lore entries.

But let's ignore that and make them fuck each other
I think people wildly underestimate how fucking awful this plotline actually is, if you read through the lore tabs and their respective stories from when them being gay was revealed to season of echos (around a year and a half ago) it was so awful and cringe worthy.

It was so bad that, them being gay wasant even the main reason why it was bad and forced. The writing was so awful and bordering on fanfiction that them being gay was completely nullified, it didnt matter, it was the very least of that arc's problems.

I thoroughly believe that one of the things that kicked off Destiny's rapid decline after Final Shape, besides the fact that the story was "over" and Bungie didn't know where else to go, was the season tied to final shapes release and it's focus on Saint and Osiris' faggotry.

I stopped playing around that time, and even when I did try and come back to it, the fucking constant melodrama between Saint and Osiris kept pissing me off.

It also doesn't help that I just straight up hate Osiris. I got enough of this faggot in Lightfall.

A lot of Bungies lore changes in D2 were just terrible, I will never forgive them for doing the #notallmuslims thing with the Fallen. Acting like they all weren't in concensus to invade earth and genocide humanity.

Them treating Saints crusade against the Fallen like it was a bad thing fucking infuriates me

That was by far the worst season they ever made when it comes to the writing. Whoever thought a whole season spent dealing with two gay couples having relationship problems would be entertaining has to be braindead. We spend weeks listening to Saint cry about not being the original and that Osiris doesn't love the current him. While the villain is another character turned gay (this time a woman) that now uses Vex tech to search through alternate timelines to find a perfect version of her wife. It didn't help that they made you sit there in the Helm listening to them argue between every mission.

I didn't find the episodes that bad. What was bad imo was the decisions. For example in revenant they removed craft able weapons, then started fudging around with health values in heresy, then transitioning to rng manipulation to get loot instead of just crafting the thing. It was a massive step back, before the portal hit the final nail in the coffin.

Eps, did have some good moment, I thought the Prison of Elders activities was quite good for a seasonal acitivity, and the Echos delve act. we're basically strikes which i thought were welcome. Contrary to what most people say, Heresy was the worst season, it was like Haunted where you're forced to do shitty public events and secrets to get loot, the story at least was way better than Haunted. But that's not saying much.

The irony is when the Straight woman (Alison Lurs) took charge of the story instead of the bipoc twink. The story started talking about straight people and actually got a lot better. It's a shame that her vision wont be fully realized because I think based on what was being established in EoF, we were going to eat good.

Stop caring about this game when they added that marge simpson demon from hell, I forgot its name, and also those gay niggers from outer space were painfully cringe. I mumbled to myself like avgn for a couple minutes while playing that expansion's demo... wtf were they thinking :'(

Sad. Shutting down the only good game. Saw Destiny on ps4 for 5 euro last week at a second hand store. Its so over.
I have heard people say on PSN they sell the first Destiny with all DLC for 20 dollars, and some times they even put it up at 5 dollars too. Also there is talk about the first Destiny game have as much players as back in 2016 now days. Specially after the bad news about Destiny2 and Marathon suck ass. People just want to relive the good days of Destiny by the look of it.
