Each cold pack weighs around 0.20 pounds, a 50 pack of cold packs on amazon costs $35 before tax. He had over 100 pounds of it so I'll just use 150 as an example. He would need around 750 to get to 150 pounds of AN but lets say he gets 800. He would need to buy 16 packs of 50 cold packs on amazon but he probably bought them at different stores to avoid suspicion. He would've spent at least $600. That's not including how much AN a cold pack actually contains. Absurd? Yes. But can it be done? Yes. I believe that's how he gotten hands on that sweet AN.

The internet estimates that there's about 30 to 50 grams AN per cold pack, so to get a hundred pounds you'd have to convert to metricfag and... buy betweeen 908 and 1512 individual cold packs and take the time to carefully open each one and dump the powder out. I could see a sufficiently motivated schizoid or terrorist autist attempting it, but idk about some fat fuck spree shooter.

If you try to buy more than a couple boxes of Sudafed in the US, you go on a watch list and the government starts looking into your spending. I think there's something similar for battery operated smoke alarms.

If it's somewhat commonly known that you can harvest AN from cold packs, I'd bet that buying a certain amount of them at the same time will trigger something similar. I have multiple friends that have agriculture licenses in different states and they all attest that the feds are extreme sticklers about it. It is very controlled, to the extent that it was a big scandal when a bunch went missing from a rail car recently.

I'm really hung up on how he got the AN. I'm also hung up on why he tried activating it with aluminum powder when he could have gotten more devastating results with a more common and less suspicious ingredient. I'm also pretty sure that tannerite isn't energetic enough to detonate most AN concoctions. You usually need something around the energy of TNT to get it to detonate. It's like he got his information from someone that was feeding him half truths. He had the ingredients to make a scary headline but not to do what he intended to do.

She also claims they dropped the explosives charges. She said "TANNERITE ISN'T ILLEGAL IN THE US!" It is when you're trying to use it as a detonating charge for a primary explosive with the intent to kill multiple people. The DA might have just said fuck it on pursuing the charges due to him get multiple lifetimes. She also said she didn't know about it because it was in her parents house, but I have a funny feeling that someone explained to you along the way what would have happened if he knew what he was doing because it would have turned your parents, the police, and their home into splinters. If the sheriff was willing to talk to the media about it, then she and the lawyers knew.

Say what you want about the rest of her story, but I'm not buying the ammonium nitrate stuff. Something is fishy here.

I agree, but there's no way he was smart enough to buy it legally. Making AN isn't too hard and the ingredients aren't hard to get, but buying THAT MUCH would've gotten a search warrant signed or placed on a watchlist at least. I guess he could've stolen it but I don't really see him being a good thief.
