This is the Golf game he played and didn't understand.
Left slider controls the strength of your shot, the higher the mark on the gauge is, the stronger the shot is.
The little ball on the big golf ball decides in what direction your shot goes, so if you press the shot button while the little ball is on the lower right of the big ball, the shot goes more to the left and vice versa. If you hit it from a lower angle, the ball will fly in an higher arc with less distance, which is useful for getting out of bunkers or if you want to decrease some distance. In some games you have free range over this and can take your time, but not in this one where it goes all over the ball pretty fast. In some games you move your golfer around to change the direction of the ball (Neo Turf Masters for example) and you also have to take wind direction into account. Your stance also plays into this.
This has been pretty much the standard for golf games with minor variations since even before wolverine doll was a thing.
