As someone who's only followed Phil for the last few months, I don't have much reference for who he used to be, but based on the way Phil talks about it, his old self sounds way fucking more entertaining than his new wholesome chill streamer vibe. Oh he had anger issues? Good, I'd prefer that over the pathetic little worm who has to play Arc Raiders on tourist mode and meekly whisper "helloooo" to anyone who passes.

A good rule of thumb to remember is to never take Phil's word about how he used to be.

Pretty much this because one thing about Phil is that at the drop of the hat he loves to retcon his life so he can pretend he is different. To me it is the weirdest thing about him because it's fascinating to see a man who lies to not only his audience but himself and will have tons of excuses to why he was the way he used to be however if you've seen the recent things with him trying to talk trash to LTG and Wings he is a massive hypocrite because of this. He holds things they did with some accountability but when you ask him the same thing he lies to you and tells you to stop holding old things against him as he tries to retcon his way out of responsibility.

I think he was active if the community took his rank seriously, Phil only engages when he’s fairly confident in his weird insistence to win every social interaction. If he had no weight to throw around he was probably just sucking off his perceived betters in DMs

Phil was in factions with mostly people well below his level. The competitive ones told him to fuck off and didn't want that trouble. So, you know Phil was acting like the big baller telling everyone what to do and flashing how much money he spent. Hence the "open wallet" mocking from some who were contacted by detractors.

Almost all factions in the top 1-50 range all have some type of communication; they use line/discord. In the top 50 you need to be able to communicate with your teammates for boss events and especially for feud events when you're playing at that level. Phil was caught on Discord bragging in his past factions but you can see from the sc I posted above the faction he was in for the longest time didn't require line or discord which is what I'm sure appealed to him and made him join because undoubtedly trolls would have gotten into that Discord constantly to track him and troll him or dox their members like they did with his past factions.

I should add that any competitive gacha guild/clan/faction are usually groups of people who autism out the cheapest way to get top ranks. We know from his champions streams that Phil actually knows very little about how to actually fucking play the game he sunk potentially 6-figures on. The best compliment his faction members could say about him was that he was an open wallet (read: a whale who just buys his way to winning events and isn't actually putting the work into the sweatyman grind).

Which means that even at WWE champions Phil still thinks showing people the shiny expensive thing will get them to like him.

The FGC has always been at it's peak when locals/arcades were around, not because you can play it all in your home in the dark alone like a fucking hermit. Same for Movies, it's a experience about going outside, socializing, activities.

If DSP was actually a "good fighting game player" as he claims to be, he would have had an SF2 cabinet at home. There's no reason for a guy that popular, that successful, to have to go to a public place to play SF2. Phil was getting booted from every faction because Nigel and his ilk would infiltrate every Discord/Line. He eventually had to settle on that Sons of Smackdown one didn't require any interaction. These were low level factions already, though. The big ones with whales on his level regularly on leaderboards already knew about Phil and weren't going to put up with him.

I have his WWEC page too but it seems to update and say "last active: a minute ago" every time I check or after a refresh so I don't think it's reliable.

The last online part seems pretty reliable. Just check it throughout the day it says 1 minute ago a lot when you check because he is playing for hours a day. At night it will go to around 3-8 hours offline at most but every single time he goes on break or ends stream it changes to 1 minute ago meaning he is playing.
