He’s got a spark of streaming creativity
I don't think so, he just applies popular shit to Phil, for example:
  • Complete the quote but it's a Phil quote
  • Guess the year of the quote but again it's a Phil quote
  • Name best 10 (goal scorers, selling albums, etc) but now it's with game franchises played by Phil number of views
  • He overuses that fucking soundboard (that's gay)
Don't get me started on the starting time of "Youtube mode" polls clown maxxing, he was yelling those seconds like he was dropping the ball in Times Square.
There are legit funny detractors like Merkat, Lewdacris, Wolverine Doll, even Tevin but ALT is buffoon tier compared with them.

Where did I say he’s funny? I argued that he’s got qualities that could enable success outside the snortex.

He's a weeb sperg who socially isolated himself in Japan a la Chibinkodemyx
Nigga what? He was an assistant teacher that sold lesson plans to teachers and had a side hustle doing a (sponsored) podcast milking weebs. If my lore's right I think at some point he was a part of a group that connected foreigners and Japanese people but left because the foreigners were talking to each other instead and so he just went out to bars. Supposedly being an ALT isn't like a JET because you're the school's bitch (and a teacher's assistant at that) and have to work under their standards/expectations instead of whatever agency you're under. If that's the case then he had to work with whatever school enough for them to let him keep the job for however many years.

When it does and he finally decides he's burnt out from the DSP content, that he needs to establish himself and his audience separate from the DSP crutch, and he tries something new, those viewers will follow him... at first.
It's not like this would be his first time changing his industry for lack of a better term. When he was doing his Japan podcast the whole "life in Japan" thing wasn't really a huge thing at the time and he was well connected. He could easily pivot towards that grift, and there is a lot more money and views in being a professional Wapanese shill than being a detractor.
The last time ALT came up I noticed that he does his streams while his kids are at school, and being a contracted translator he probably has a hell of a lot of free time. Supposedly Chu goes on a yearly trip to Japan with the kids to visit family, so I think there's a strong element of boredom here.

For someone who constantly says it's not that deep, it really does seem like it's that deep for ALT and it really saps the fun out of the whole thing.
I forgot who coined it but ALT has an addictive personality, he has "phases" where he's super into something, beats it until it's dust, and hops to something else. You can see it in the Eras of WPIG but it's much more obvious on smaller scales like running a gag into the ground. FWIW WPIG has always been metrics-heavy but it's historically been about the interactive stuff like pull counts/odds, gambling, and so on. When ALT started getting more paranoid about not being in control, he set up WPIGTV and banished the interactivity there.

Ironically ALT is a lot like Ralph in that he can hold a show on his own (and can be great when he hits his stride, see his Iceberg/deep dives) but his true skill is bringing people that mesh well together. Plus he's good at interviewing (as long as his 'tism remains in control) and can handle drama, which is a pretty rare combination. And also like Ralph, he focused on the quick and easy route (in this case restreaming Phil) instead of what set him apart like Ack the King and Dent Sea Scrolls.

I never understood why Steve was there at all.
There was never any good reason why Steve was there because he fundamentally always failed at his raison d'être as a co-host.

He wasn't funny and he often didn't play off against the others, particularly Meerkat and Sam, very well. His biggest sin, however, was his alleged expertise as a mental health professional. I'm going to take his credentials at face value and say that he's educated enough that he could find employment in the field if it wasn't for "muh back!"

Rarely did an episode go by that he didn't offer an opinion on Phail's mental health based on what he saw during streams. I'll be honest, I found that to be unethical behavior for a mental health professional. I know, there are a lot of YouTube channels who do the same thing, but I find it unethical for supposed mental health professionals to blithely declare remote diagnoses based purely on watching an idiot's live streams.

More problematic, however, was his grave dancing after Kirk was murdered. I don't care what Steve's politics are, but for someone who made it a weekly practice to cast aspersions about Phail's mental health to then engage in borderline psychopathic behavior (see Steve, I can do it too!) by celebrating the brutal murder of a man in front of his family is one level of hypocrisy too far. How can someone smugly and repeatedly declare Phail to be suffering Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and then engage in behavior that fits very nicely within the DSM definition of that disorder?

I could be overthinking it, but a mental health professional engaging in dehumanization, moral disengagement, and a lack of empathy isn't someone who should be hanging their coat on that so-called expertise to offer opinions as a co-host.

And he loves trannies. Fuck him.
