🐱 ‘Cuties’ Boycott Is an Attack on Creative Freedom Fueled by Conservatives

L’ARP (La Société civile des Auteurs-Réalisateurs-Producteurs), France’s authors, directors, and producers guild, issued a statement September 15 defending the controversial release of the Netflixoriginal movie “Cuties.” The film has become a national talking point following its September 9 release over accusations it sexualizes child actors and promotes child pornography. L’ARP says the backlash over “Cuties” is a “grave attack on freedom of creation” being fueled by “the most conservative of Americans” (via Variety).

“At a time when the most conservative of Americans are calling for a boycott of the film ‘Cuties,’ we would like to support its director, Maimouna Doucouré, who won the Best Direction award at the Sundance Film Festival,” an official L’ARP statement reads. “This film, produced in France, then bought by Netflix for distribution in the United States, is emblematic of the indispensable freedom of expression that cinema, in all its diversity, needs to address disturbing topics, therefore it’s necessary for the exercise of democracy. We will always stand with those who support and disseminate works expressing this freedom.”

Outrage over “Cuties” erupted August 20 after Netflix debuted a poster for the film that featured its child stars making suggestive dance poses in revealing outfits. The poster led to accusations the film sexualizes its stars, when in reality “Cuties” openly criticizes the ways in which society puts pressure on young girls to be overtly sexual.

Netflix apologized for inappropriately marketing the film, but the September 9 streaming debut of “Cuties” resulted in more outrage. Senator Ted Cruz sent a letter to the Department of Justice over the weekend asking for Netflix to be investigated over the production and distribution of child pornography. David Grumbach is the CEO of Bac Films, the French finance and distribution company behind “Cuties,” and he tells Variety that it’s “scandalous to accuse us of promoting child pornography.”

“I think the protests are coming from the right wing — from a fringe of ultra conservatism,” Grumbach said. “But we’re grateful that Netflix [kept] the film [on its platform] and has supported it despite everything. We must be strong and united to protect the freedom of filmmakers. It’s not just for France, but also for Hollywood.”

Grumbach continued, “Think about Jodie Foster who was 12 when she played a prostitute in ‘Taxi Driver,’ or the movie ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ or the countless other movies that would have been boycotted if we caved to this kind of conservatism. We wouldn’t be able to make movies about abortion, violence, etc. because to denounce something, you need to show it.”

“Cuties” filmmaker Maimouna Doucouré reacted to the backlash last week in an interview with Zora magazine, saying, “I realize that the people who have started this controversy haven’t yet seen the film. Netflix has apologized to the public and to myself. I’m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it’s out. I’m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we’re both on the same side of this fight against young children’s hypersexualization.”

“Cuties” is now streaming on Netflix.

If thinking "coercing 11-year olds into twerking in skin tight clothes while elderly french men shove cameras up their asses and shout instructions about how to dance more erotically is evil" is a conservative position, then I guess I'm conservative. I sort of felt this when I saw that Pink News meme going around about "Republicans want to ban child drag shows" as though it was a bad thing, but now I think I'm decided on it. I want medicare for all, student loan debt forgiveness, etc., but not if it comes at the cost of accepting 5th graders being filmed dancing like adult women in a rap video. If this is the hill the Democrat/liberal establishment wants to die on them I'm out.

This is how I have felt for a long time. Cuties is just the icing on the cake. The Dem/lib establishment has turned into something unrecognizable to me. Almost alien. Uncanny valley even.

And I don't see how stuff like this is supposed to help them. They push some stuff so hard then attack any criticism of it as right wing. There comes a point after all the white bashing, and drag kids, and twerking 11 year olds that people just say "If being against child exploitation/white bashing/etc. is right wing, then fuck it, I guess I'm a right winger."

Seems like a counterproductive tactic.

We will always stand with those who support and disseminate works expressing this freedom.

Until you make something on the conservative side, then all the sudden it doesn't matter anymore and it's time to protest and boycott.

Think about Jodie Foster who was 12 when she played a prostitute in ‘Taxi Driver,’ or the movie ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ or the countless other movies that would have been boycotted if we caved to this kind of conservatism. We wouldn’t be able to make movies about abortion, violence, etc. because to denounce something, you need to show it.

She wasn't on the cover of the movie spreading her legs though? So kind of a retarded take.

It’s an interesting question, actually, and one I hope makes its way to court, because I seem to recall that the definition of pornography is that it has no artistic merit. It would be interesting to test this against that definition to see if that still should be part of the criteria.

And I am actually sincere about that. I’m willing to accept that the people who made Cuties considered it art. But there’s also adult visual novels that I’d say have artistic elements despite being pornographic. I would be curious if our legal definition is outdated.

Nobody isn't telling you to not make the movie.

People are telling you to NOT MAKE IT WITH ACTUAL CHILDREN. Its fucking disgusting. So you want the creative freedom to fully sexualize children with crotch shots, ass shaking, dry humping and focusing on their sexuality? Go fuck yourself. Everyone remotely fucking normal finds this disturbing and disgusting. We have plenty of movies based around young teens but they're played by adults.

Also notice it's by the directors and producers association. Wow, they really want to have their 650 child audition dance tapes for their private stash. Fuck off France. Take in more migrants, your thinly veiled excuse of wanting to fuck children is obvious. Fucking French trash.

And creative freedom only counts when its something you like? Fuck you hypocritical cunts.

I'm pretty grounded in reality but are we sure some Doctor Who level mind control/alien fuckery isn't making the world go full retard?
I'm used to things being shitty so covid and the bixnood chimpouts are merely another reason the world is ass so I'm about as stable as I always am.
Which sadly is a standard nobody should be held to but cannot achieve currently.

Okay, let me get this straight, it's wrong to put a fictional adult video game or comic book book woman in a bikini, women made out of polygons or ink, but it's okay to film real life 11 year olds dancing in a very sexually suggestive manner?

Really gets the noggin joggin.
The hypocrisy of our modern politics is weird.

This is their excuse. They use this as an argument in their official statement. Shoot a puppy on camera to denounce animal cruelty, make a real snuff film to denounce the horrors of snuff porn, etc etc. That's the only way to truly raise awareness about an issue, according to these people. Jesus Christ.

The art of making movies is precisely to raise strong emotions in the viewer through acting, directing, clever editing and props, not by filming the real thing.

If someone decides to make a documentary denouncing child pornography, will these psychos suggest showing samples of uncensored CP footage?
Well, it is pretty interesting how many podcasts about movies both have your stereotypical liberal hosts and have them mention the rape scene in Irreversible as a good anti-rape statement multiple times.

edit: derp, I misunderstood the point being made.

Wasn't that just really good acting?

Last Tango in Paris apparently had a scene where Brando's character forces himself on a woman. The director decided at the last moment to add a stick of butter to the mix.

The scene became the target of renewed scrutiny beginning in 2016, when a 2013 video clip in which Bertolucci discussed the film went viral. The director acknowledged that he’d sprung the butter detail on Schneider at the last minute, because he wanted her onscreen humiliation and rage to be real. “I wanted Maria to feel, not to act,” he said.

Brando didn’t actually penetrate Schneider in the scene. But it was an incident of real sexual humiliation nonetheless, by all accounts. And in a time of reckoning around sexual misconduct, misogyny, and abuse of power in Hollywood, it deserves to be remembered as part of his legacy.

Bertolucci argued that it was necessary to humiliate Schneider in order to make his film. But that argument reveals a fundamental inequity that the #MeToo movement is only beginning to expose: In Hollywood, some people, most of them men, have the power to decide what makes great art — and who deserves to get hurt in order to create it.

In WWI the germans sort of brought it on themselves with unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmerman Telegram. The US was willing to sit on the sidelines until those brought us in and led us to throw the full weight of our financial sector behind the Entente.
Woodrow Wilson was a anglophile cunt willing to do anything to get America involved. There was a culture war carried about against German-Americans to obliterate their culture in order to Americanize them as well as propaganda that supported the British.

It makes me think of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, where aliens use telephone signals to make people stupider, that makes me think of "smart" phones making people dumber.

Who knows? We're getting to the point where literally nothing would surprise me anymore, even stuff in science fiction or supernatural territory.

The hypocrisy of our modern politics is weird.

If by weird you mean some of the worst insanity of the present day, stop and think about what it means to get your panties in a bunch about sexy polygonal women but turn around and defend Cuties, the sheer, utter lack of any sense or logic with these people boggles the fucking mind.

Now what if it was the same movie but animated in Japan?

Then of course liking it would make you a pedophile, because somehow animated girls are worse than filming real life 11 year olds, somehow...
