🐱 ‘Cuties’ Boycott Is an Attack on Creative Freedom Fueled by Conservatives

L’ARP (La Société civile des Auteurs-Réalisateurs-Producteurs), France’s authors, directors, and producers guild, issued a statement September 15 defending the controversial release of the Netflixoriginal movie “Cuties.” The film has become a national talking point following its September 9 release over accusations it sexualizes child actors and promotes child pornography. L’ARP says the backlash over “Cuties” is a “grave attack on freedom of creation” being fueled by “the most conservative of Americans” (via Variety).

“At a time when the most conservative of Americans are calling for a boycott of the film ‘Cuties,’ we would like to support its director, Maimouna Doucouré, who won the Best Direction award at the Sundance Film Festival,” an official L’ARP statement reads. “This film, produced in France, then bought by Netflix for distribution in the United States, is emblematic of the indispensable freedom of expression that cinema, in all its diversity, needs to address disturbing topics, therefore it’s necessary for the exercise of democracy. We will always stand with those who support and disseminate works expressing this freedom.”

Outrage over “Cuties” erupted August 20 after Netflix debuted a poster for the film that featured its child stars making suggestive dance poses in revealing outfits. The poster led to accusations the film sexualizes its stars, when in reality “Cuties” openly criticizes the ways in which society puts pressure on young girls to be overtly sexual.

Netflix apologized for inappropriately marketing the film, but the September 9 streaming debut of “Cuties” resulted in more outrage. Senator Ted Cruz sent a letter to the Department of Justice over the weekend asking for Netflix to be investigated over the production and distribution of child pornography. David Grumbach is the CEO of Bac Films, the French finance and distribution company behind “Cuties,” and he tells Variety that it’s “scandalous to accuse us of promoting child pornography.”

“I think the protests are coming from the right wing — from a fringe of ultra conservatism,” Grumbach said. “But we’re grateful that Netflix [kept] the film [on its platform] and has supported it despite everything. We must be strong and united to protect the freedom of filmmakers. It’s not just for France, but also for Hollywood.”

Grumbach continued, “Think about Jodie Foster who was 12 when she played a prostitute in ‘Taxi Driver,’ or the movie ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ or the countless other movies that would have been boycotted if we caved to this kind of conservatism. We wouldn’t be able to make movies about abortion, violence, etc. because to denounce something, you need to show it.”

“Cuties” filmmaker Maimouna Doucouré reacted to the backlash last week in an interview with Zora magazine, saying, “I realize that the people who have started this controversy haven’t yet seen the film. Netflix has apologized to the public and to myself. I’m hoping that these people will watch the movie now that it’s out. I’m eager to see their reaction when they realize that we’re both on the same side of this fight against young children’s hypersexualization.”

“Cuties” is now streaming on Netflix.

In the debate about violent video games, someone always makes the point that the people who want them banned can't distinguish between fantasy and reality. These people have the same problem, except instead of thinking fantasy is reality, they think reality is fantasy.

2020 has been a horrible fucking year and the alt right intends to keep it that way.

It wasn't enough that they ignored Covid shutdowns and ordered the police to murder even more innocent Black people. Now they're coming after Netflix for daring to make the excellent movie known as Cuties.

For those of you who don't know, Cuties is a boldly diverse French movie made by an up and coming Senegalese female director by the name of Maïmouna Doucouré, so of course those alt right bigots are going to hate it. They'll cry their crocodile tears about how "Children are being exploited" while conveniently ignoring the ICE run concentration camps along our southern border.

They expect intelligent people to be moved by their fake compassion. We won't.

In fact, we will make Cuties the hill the alt right dies on. They are sadly mistaken if they think they'll find any common ground with anyone who isn't a raging white neo nazi. We will isolate them, contain them, and ensure that anyone intelligent enough to appreciate Cuties' message against the sexual exploitation of children can do so without screeching man babies crying over a little tasteful nudity.

Of the few good things to come out of this rotten year, Cuties is one of them. That is why we must protect this daring example of free artistic expression at all costs. If you see someone badmouthing this movie, you step up and shut them down. If you see them on social media, you report their accounts. If they're your friends and family, you don't need them in your life. An intelligent person attempting to reason with an alt right bigot makes two alt right bigots.

You're not a bigot, right? If you're not, support Cuties.

Have you considered writing for Slate?

L'ARPédés dijo:

This is their excuse. They use this as an argument in their official statement. Shoot a puppy on camera to denounce animal cruelty, make a real snuff film to denounce the horrors of snuff porn, etc etc. That's the only way to truly raise awareness about an issue, according to these people. Jesus Christ.

The art of making movies is precisely to raise strong emotions in the viewer through acting, directing, clever editing and props, not by filming the real thing.

If someone decides to make a documentary denouncing child pornography, will these psychos suggest showing samples of uncensored CP footage?

Can these degenerate pedophiles shut the hell up already and at least keep their raping of children to themselves? God damn.
No I think it's good that they keep talking. They will be much easier to locate if they've already outed themselves, after all.

Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences, as you lefties are always telling us....

The right to create art does not mean the right to a captive audience that will do nothing but praise it.

I think it's kind of weird the author would mention Little Miss Sunshine vs. say, Léon: The Professional.

I like the film but Natalie Portman's roll is a little creepy.

Well considering the relationship between Portman's character and Léon was inspired by Luc Besson's real relationship with a teenager who he married when she was 16 (he was 31) and had a child with, creepy is an understatement.
I'm surprised Besson isn't a member of ARP.

EDIT - fucking lol:

The 'making of’ reveals that at the urgings of Portman and her very protective parents, some of Besson’s more 'extreme’ beats concerning the film’s central relationship were excised at script stage; like a scene where Leon accidentally walks in on Mathilda as she takes a shower (he’s embarrassed, she’s oblivious!).
