Beksinski is revolting, and I say that as somebody with deep admiration for (legitimately) morbid and frightening art, like Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. In terms of edgy art beloved by pseuds though, the gold medal has to go to Remedios Varo. The same sickly orange skies and zero-effort chiaroscuro as Beksinski, but with bonus poor anatomy skills excused by "surrealism" as a theme. Never in a single Varo painting is a humanoid face expressing any ambiguous or deep emotion; it's almost autistic. He's not as "pop" as Beksinski, but he's beloved of edgelord normies who are """artsy""".

I have some sympathy for people who wanted to be weird before abstraction was entirely normalised (we can't all be aliens like Hilma af Klint), but people who use the subjects of Dali and the symbolists with the technique of somebody such as Klee, but learning nothing from either, is hard to enjoy.
I don't fully dislike Varo, as he has some curious pseudo-Medieval works that his shitty perspective adds even more to beyond the colour palette and subject, but it's definitely not high-grade. Even when compared to another lesser-light such as Čiurlionis, there is a marked difference in vision and technique, to the favour of the other IMO.

This kind of stuff makes me really sad because the art is genuinely well done and they have an obvious understanding of their anatomy and fundamentals, but they choose to do this awkward half-furry garbage. This art is a few years shy of being worthy of videogame conceptual art or even film, but it’s wasted on socially inept childish crap
