It’s Wednesday, September 5th, 2012. Saad al-Hilli is on a family vacation with his wife, mother-in-law and two young daughters. He has driven his maroon BMW Estate from the family home in Surrey, England to a forested area near Chevaline, Haute-Savoie, France by Lake Annecy. Some reports have suggested the family were heading to Switzerland, Haute-Savoie borders Switzerland, but took a detour when they heard from a local that Lake Annecy was beautiful. Saad pulls into what North Americans would call a rest area. usually called a lay-by in Britain. This is the worst decision that Saad will ever make, and one of the last decisions he will ever make.

Saad is a member of a wealth Iraqi family that fled to Britain in 1971 when he would have been around 9 years old. He works as an engineer specialising in micro‑satellites and telecommunications. This is an extremely technical field and he is well compensated for his work. Recently, Saad’s father had died and he is in a dispute with his brother, Zaid, over the inheritance. This is possibly why the al-Hilli family are en route to Switzerland. Saad’s wealthy father was not in the good graces of Saddam Hussein, so he moved his wealth out of Iraq and into a Swiss bank account during the ‘80s or ‘90s. Both Saad and Zaid seem to have accused the other of attempting to improperly access this account.

At around 4:00 PM, Brett Martin, a British expat living in France, was on a bicycle ride when he reached the lay-by. There he saw scene of absolute horror. 7 year old Zainab al-Hilli stumbled into the road in front of him and collapsed. She was bleeding from a severe beating to the head and gunshot wound in her shoulder. The BMW was in reverse, tires spinning in the loose gravel. Inside Saad, his wife Iqbal and her mother Suhaila are all dead. They’ve each been shot twice in the head. Lying on the ground in the lay-by is Sylvain Mollier, a local welder who had gone for a bicycle ride. He was shot seven times. Brett immediately calls the police.

The National Gendarmerie have jurisdiction in rural France. They are a branch of the French military and are the initial agency to investigate this case. When their forensic specialists go to move the bodies, they find 4 year old Zeena clinging to her dead mother’s legs. She is physically unharmed.

The shooting is bizarre. A total of 25 shots were fired. The shooter achieved multiple head shots from an odd downward angle. This likely meant the shooter used an unorthodox, overhead firing technique. Though everything about the shooting was unorthodox. He used a single Luger P06 semi-automatic pistol. Subsequent analysis of spent casings and bullets will lead police to conclude that the pistol was made in Switzerland in 1935. Only 940 of this particular version of the pistol were made in a single production run. The 7.65×21mm Parabellum fired by the pistol is extremely rare. Police is France and Switzerland will attempt to trace all sales of this ammo without success. This leads them to conclude the bullets were possibly purchased during the 1930s or ‘40s. Given that P06 magazines can only hold eight rounds, this meant the shooter reloaded at least twice. If the shooter did not initially have a ninth round chambered, it would require reloading three times.

Zainab initially has no memory of what happened due to her head injuries. All she could recall was passing back and forth outside of the car while her parents screamed at her to get back in the car. She later has a flashback in 2020 and tells police that she remembers being outside of the car. Her parents are screaming for her to get back in the car. Then, a middle aged white man throws her and then seizes her and fires into the car. He then shoots her once in the shoulder. At this point, the shooter either runs out of ammunition or the pistol experiences a malfunction that he cannot remedy. He then savagely pistol whips the little girl and she losses consciousness. She describes him as being around 45 years old, having a shaved head, bitten down fingernails, blue eyes and a poorly shaven round face. He was wearing black leather pants and a black leather blouson which is a type of jacket warn by some European military and police forces.

British and French police go on to arrest several innocent men including Zaid al-Hilli. All are cleared though some media reports suggest that Zaid hired an assassin to kill his brother. Given what scumbags British “journalists” are, it should come as no surprise that a number of outlandish theories have been put forward. Some have claimed that Saad was secretly trying to access Saddam Hussein’s Swiss bank accounts. Others have speculated that he had top secret information about government satellites and was killed as a result. Others have claimed Saad was killed by the Mossad due to political statements he made on social media, though no one can actually demonstrate that he ever posted anything of the sort.

Multiple criminals and odd individuals have been investigated and cleared. The French police have DNA that likely belongs to the killer and it has cleared all suspects. French police have tested every Luger P06 they can find, but none of the ballistics match the murder weapon.

This is Canada that we're talking about. A lot of those tips are useful, but the people that hear them (i.e., RCMP employees) are so brain-dead that they don't recognize their usefulness. Canada has some of the worst investigative capabilities in the developed world, and maybe the most unjust justice system to boot too. Mind you, the RCMP has said that they've received over 1000 tips about Mekayla as of 2026.


My musings on the case are as follows:

A lot of times in the case of a missing teenager, the family tends to cover up the extent of that teenager's difficulties. I think they do this out of love: they don't wanna air out any dirty laundry to the whole nation. In the case of Mekayla, I think her mother understated the severity of her daughter's mental issues, and whitewashed her behaviour. Mekayla was an acne-riddled, nerdy, self-conscious 16-year-old girl living in a small town filled with closed-minded gossips. She didn't have many close friends, and she often made up grandiose lies to her friends that she did have to try and impress them. She suffered from depression to the extent that she regularly harmed herself via razor and made copious amounts of attention-seeking posts on her social media.

Coupled with her mental health issues and her behavioral changes, I think that her family didn't fully understand that dangers of the internet and didn't have strong internet safety protocols within the home. Mekayla strikes me as the type of girl that spent way too much time online. She had many different accounts online, and I doubt that her mother or her friends were aware of all of them. She used multiple different handles on different websites and social media platforms. The investigators focused on her Kik account. For those unaware, Kik is a messaging platform that was, at the time, what Discord is for groomers today. From what I'm aware, the company that owns Kik refused to cooperate with investigators. I think that the message logs from this platform would have been immensely helpful for the investigators, but I also think that they were short-sighted. I believe that Mekayla would have been using many different platforms to communicate with strangers online, not just Kik.

My personal belief is that Mekayla isn't dead. I think her case is similar to that of Alicia Navarro, a girl that had gone missing as a teenager but turned up as an adult many years later, having been groomed by an older man online and going on to live with him.

I think that Mekayla had been groomed by a man older , whether online or one she met in person, and that she willingly left the province with him. I think she felt lonely and depressed, and hated living where she lived, and wanted a more glamourous life which he convinced her that he could provide. I believe that she and him currently live in a rural area of Northern Ontario. I believe that they live in Ontario because there had been a time when her cellphone was pinged at a location near Toronto City Hall, and there have been alleged sightings of a woman that closely resembles Mekayla, down to the facial scars, working at resorts near provincial parks in Northern Ontario.

One of the people that reported seeing her called into the tipline provided by the Yorkton RCMP. They were told that an investigator would be in contact shortly, but the callback never came. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a common occurance with tip reporting. The RCMP and many municipal police departments are so incredibly lazy that the average non-Canadian might struggle to fathom it.

I think a lot of people underestimate the difficulty in living without an official ID. Illegal immigrants do it for years, and other victims of childhood abduction have done it before too. The only real hassle would be medicare, but even then, they could always pay out of pocket or visit crooked doctors. Working under the table is more common in Canada than most people realize, especially in rural communities.

I think it's possible that one day, after so many years together, her captor may let his guard down. Maybe she'll finally be able to walk out of the house like Alicia did and find a way to close her own case. I'm not sure if that day will ever come, but for her and her family's sake: I hope that she's alive.


With any crime that happens in a small town, it's important to keep on top of the local rumour mill. Small towns are hotbeds for gossip, and it can be hard to seperate truth from hearsay, but I think it's important to know a few of the local rumours. I've come across a lot, having been interested in this case for so long.

Earlier I had mentioned that I believe Mekayla's mum whitewashed some of her daughter's behaviour. Before the disappearance, Mekayla had been becoming more socialable. This reflects her mother's belief that Mekayla's 'dark days' were behind her. Mekayla had been going out more with her friends, and had begun to frequent high-school parties. A lot of her classmates have said that older men, in their early 20s, were usually present at these parties as well. Her best friend at the time, a girl named Hannah, was known to experiment with drugs at this parties.

Earlier I had mentioned that Mekayla had a history of lying to her friends about things. One of these lies included drugs. Mekayla had lied to her friends about possessing recreational drugs, producing a few unmarked tablets from her bookbag. Her friends saw through this lie, recognizing the tablets as Mekayla's anti-acne medication. This was apparently quite an embarrassing moment for Mekayla.

Could Mekayla have wanted to buy real drugs to prove to her friends that she was cool? Was the person she planned to meet a dealer? Did something go wrong during the deal?

I mentioned that Mekayla had been attending parties featuring alcohol, recreational drugs, and older men. There's a rumour that Mekayla had an interest in older men. Maybe they made her feel more grown up, or maybe she had learned this behaviour from her friend Hannah, who had a track record of doing the same and who had been in the party scene a lot longer than Mekayla had been.

It's been alleged that Mekayla had an older beau, a man that she met at one of the parties she attended and a regular in the scene. They had been in an unofficial relationship for some time. He was the one that she was meant to meet that day. The rumour goes that the two of them were having sex sometime that afternoon when something wrong happened during the act, and she had unintentionally died. Fearing reprisal and being outed as a nonce, the older man hid her body somewhere on the outskirts of town with the help of his friends.

As a segue, Hannah is often viewed with a certain suspicion by some of the people that have followed Mekayla's story. Hannah had seemed resistant to cooperate with investigators, and besides one televised interview that all of Mekayla's friends had attended, Hannah didn't speak much of Mekayla after the disappearance. Hannah ended up moving away from Yorkton shortly after the disappearance, and deleted all of the pictures she had with Mekayla from her public social media accounts. Some people are under the belief that Hannah knows more about the case than she lets on, specifically about the events leading up to the disappearance.

This one is sort of strange. In a few locations around Southern Saskatchewan, there's been graffiti left within gas station bathrooms that detail how the RCMP is more involved in Mekayla's dissapearance than they let on. Whether the crime was committed by a younger family member of an officer, or whether the RCMP know what's happened but refuse to divulge details is unknown.

This type of graffito has appeared in several different gas stations around the province. This claim seems unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past the RCMP either. They only time they do any real work is when they're trying to save their own asses.


As for potential red herrings:

I really doubt that Mekayla fiddling with her phone was anything sinister. She had an old busted android phone, and back in 2016 there were lots of models that had issues with batteries. Sometimes, one had to pop the battery out and put it back in for the phone to work. Some people claim that she was switching her SIM card, but I don't think that's the case. It looked like innocent fiddling stemming from the boredom of waiting around.

The footage doesn't look suspicious to me at all. People have tried to analyze the characters present at the Tim's to see who looks shady, but to me, in all the footage she looks and acts normally. She's a bored 16-year-old girl waiting, she's just doing whatever pops in her mind to kill time. I assume that she was talking to someone on the phone, but not via her phone number, she was probably using an app.


Overall, I think her case isn't as mysterious as people make it out to be. I think that the main issue, like almost every crime in Canada, is that the RCMP are a bunch of dim-witted, lazy, corrupt losers that think their only task at work is to eat doughnuts and waste taxpayers' money. If this had happened somewhere in the States, this would've been solved years ago.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts about her case as well.

The one part that doesn't make sense is that the age of consent in Canada is 16. She could legally date an older guy, and Alicia Navarro went to the cops when she was 18. Unlike in the Navarro case, there would be little for the cops to investigate in Mekayla's case if she came forward.

I don't doubt that Mekayla was groomed and convinced to run off with an grown man, but I suspect he probably killed her.

The age of consent versus the ability to leave home with a partner are two legally different questions. A man who helps a 16-year-old leave home is still guilty of interfering with parental custody and can still face criminal and civil consequences. Furthermore, the police would have a responsibility to investigate whether the sexual relationship had begun after Mekayla had turned 16 or before.

Just because something is legal doesn't make it socially or morally acceptable.

Sadly, you are incorrect. Section 280 of the Criminal Code states, "Every person who, without lawful authority, takes or causes to be taken a person under the age of 16 years out of the possession of and against the will of the parent or guardian of that person or of any other person who has the lawful care or charge of that person is guilty of (a) an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years; or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction." So, taking your 16 year old girlfriend whom you met online and groomed away from her mom is totally legal in Canada. We're pretty weak when it comes to legislation protecting children.

So, there would be no reason for her not to come forward, if she were alive. There's no crime to investigate her boyfriend for, and privacy legislation wouldn't even permit the police telling her family where she is. She could walk into any police department or detachment, say who she is and that she's not missing, they would verify with her fingerprints or DNA, and close the file. All they would be allowed to say is that she voluntarily ran away and the case is closed.
