I actually don't mind an Asian actor for Spike, his name was always an alias and the syndicate was heavily implied to be Chinese in origin. That said, they cast a white dude as Vicious. So apparently they went with the interpretation that the syndicate is multi-ethnic, but the main character with the clearly (albeit faked) white name is Asian. Good on you Netflix for casting the white person in the villain role instead of just making the whole fucking cast Asian (barring maybe Jet). Cho is a fucking awful choice though. Not only is Cho old as fuck, he's short as hell, not lanky like Spike, and has given no indication he can handle even a small amount of the physicality required of an actor playing Spike. CAST A FUCKING MARTIAL ARTIST.

You know what really pisses me off, though? Faye isn't latina. She, unlike Spike, is given a concrete birthplace/ethnicity: Singapore. She should be Singaporean, or AT LEAST southeast Asian, whether Malay or Indian or something. If these woke types had any standards, they'd be pissed at that, but the woke Asian article writers that were chosen by the news corporations to cover this are not mentioning it at all. Bleeding Cool is a hellhole, but at least they brought it up. If you're going to throw whitewashing to the side and consider cultural context, and I'm cool with that, actually fucking do it instead of being obviously woke Americans with no clue about the source material.

Also, it's a Netflix live action adaptation. It's gonna suck. Throw it in the garbage pile with the Witcher adaptation, where people pointing out it was blackwashed were decried as racist.

We're going to have a Ghostbusters 2016 situation on our hands I do believe. That's the same type of logic Fieg was breaking out.

I had a little cousin who discovered Bebop when he was ten years old. He thought Spike Spiegal was so fucking cool that he actually got into real fights with his parents because he wanted to legally change his first name so that it matched his hero.

I can't see this remake having the same kind of impact on anybody.

I actually agree with that second part, there's not much point having an adaptation doing the exact same thing the source material, especially the live-action version of an anime, but unless you have something very interesting to add to an existing universe and its characters, it's going to appear like a greedy move.

Ein not being a corgi is a deal breaker though.

I started smoking because of Spike :|

Notice the word "reboot." Not "adaptation." They have fully admitted that they aren't interested in translating the anime to live-action and are hiding behind it being a reboot to do whatever the fuck they want without it having to be accurate.

I don't care that they're changing the characters' races because I think it's a pointless gesture, but this does not inspire any confidence in me. Reboot or no, there are elements of a story you have to adhere to or the story becomes unrecognizable.

I could have accepted a lot of things about the adaptation, but being told it's a reboot and that Ein isn't a corgi aren't among them.

Also, I can't wait to see how they'll tackle One Piece.

From some Cowboy Bebop fan blog, not sure if it's actually official or not.

I mean the dog kinda looks close at least? Like color/markings wise.

Article sounds almost like a joke. Of course, Netflix has been a bit of a joke lately.

I'll believe it when I see more results. Right now, there's still nothing about the dog casting in any of the mainstream articles and I'd be a little surprised if Netflix used a fanblog as the first to reveal this information.

Got a curious question for you all since this is a thread about Netflix. Do you all think Marvel Studios was influential in the rise of Netflix making content as a non-film/TV entertainment company?

Now-a-days the kid would be sent to doctors and given pills and his skellington would be stretched so he could better "pass" as the lanky bounty hunter. And if he requested bell peppers and beef during his hospital stay? No beef! They gave him soy instead...

No. Producing original content was just a natural evolution of their business model. Netflix's initial success created a demand for content, raising prices and ensuring that, over time, Netflix would have to pay extraordinary amounts of money to maintain its content library. These price increases would put something of a soft cap on Netflix's profit because content providers would constantly demand higher and higher prices for their content as Netflix's revenues grew.

By producing its own content, Netflix is basically saying, "your shows/movies are only worth what it would cost us to produce our own." In other words, it creates a hard cap of what a piece of content is worth. Original content also acts as an alternative revenue stream through the sale of DVDs, merchandise and broadcast rights. If the streaming market ever contracts, Netflix's library of original content is an asset that they can exploit to stay afloat (or sell off in the case of bankruptcy).

This is amazingly stupid and the whole thing looks like cancer before it even goes into production.
Whenever producers put their vapid Representation-Checklist of "minority" actors above plot structure, character writing and consistency (especially with the source material) you end up with a clusterfuck like Ghostbusters or TLJ.

The only bad thing is you can't really directly tell Netflix to fuck off for this specific series like you could with a movie in theatres (unless you cancel your subscription over it).
I assume many people will look into it, since it's essentially free on NF anyway, but I doubt most people will stick around for longer than just the pilot episode.

Cho is a fucking terrible choice for Spike. He's not good-looking enough, for starters. He's too old at this point, he's not an action star, and he's not cool. I don't believe for a second this comedy jackass is going to be adequately doing Jeet Kune Do on screen.

Shakir is a very good actor who could work as Jet. I'm irritated that the character is black now, but that's the absolute state of Hollywood.

Pineda is also the wrong ethnicity for Faye, but she's hot as fuck. I can see her working for a version of the character, gap in her teeth notwithstanding.

Hassell I have no issues with really, but that might be because Vicious, as important a character as he is, mostly serves as a plot point for Spike.

This is going to be an awful show.

Hollywood literally requires "diversity" casting in television shows these days. It's why they have to write a black actor into the cast of every show they make.

They also discriminate openly against straight white males in the writer's room. Hollywood's movie industry is one of the most bigoted industries in America.

Which is hilarious since Ed was already black.

Actually, I don't think I've seen Ed brought up at all. So they're ignoring actual black characters to race-bend others? That'd be funny if it wasn't annoying.
