In the world today where minimalism and owning nothing appear to be the order of the day, I find myself squirreling away worldly possessions. That way if I ever fall on hard times financially, I will at least have nice things.

I thought it might be fun to discuss any collections that you might have. My larger collections include second hand CDs that people discarded at the advent of MP3 and heavily reduced clothing from flailing companies, I like to hunt for bargains, shopping sales and using coupons. I carefully curate my belongings so I am not a hoarder.

I can't be the only one who likes to collect things? What do you collect and do you have any tips or advice about maintaining or storing your collections?

Retarded as it is I got into vinyl 20 years ago and own a pretty substantial collection.

I only buy what I know I'll like and listen to; I see dorks buying shit for... internet clout I guess, but if I buy an album I know I'll be jamming to it either when I get home to my man cave when relaxing.

Something about putting down a record and knowing I'll be committing to it is much better than essentially doing the Netflix routine on Spotify where I'll waste more time searching for something than actually enjoying music.

I keep a CD collection because all of my cars in the past (and currently) didn’t have Bluetooth/aux cord or my phone wasn’t compatible for it. I still shop for used CDs, mainly “greatest hits” stuff.

I don’t recommend doing what I do, which is replace old CDs in my car by putting the old ones in the new cases, then inevitably getting every CD in the wrong case forever.

Bionicles.

Step 1: Find something you want to collect. You've already done this.
Step 2: Check any official sites to buy, then try apps like Facebook Marketplace, Offerup, etc.
Step 3: Display it. I haven't done this yet in any official sense. I just keep a few out on my computer.

There are some shelfs you can build to put your displays out. There's also, for those who collect video games, custom like GBA/DS displays. They're neat.

Physical media is definitely better than owning a subscription. Do you buy your vinyl new? Do you have any tips on storage or how to keep them pristine?

I grew up around HiFi and I've got a small LP collection, I would definitely like to expand on it though. I started off buying 220g double LP of some favorite albums but found certain latter 80’s albums were cheaper on vinyl than CD and got some second hand on Musicstack and Discogs.

Would a CD folder like this work?

Other than have multiple shelves around our place to keep them in some kind of order, I buy these cheap dozen plastic sleeves that can fit double vinyls into. Usually depending on where I go I get them for 2 bucks to 5.

Nothing fancy, just don't leave a record out on a platter. I got long forgotten things I routinely listen to from the mid 70's that I bought for 50 cents but clearly weren't abused too much if at all that sound just as tight as something made now.

CD folders are trash. The only brand still in existence does a good job of scratching your CDs although they were all the same even 15 years ago so I think that would still be the case even if it wasn't only one company still making them. Your only real option is buying blank cases if you don't have the originals.

As someone who has had CD's in a book like that for over 20 years, its not ideal, better to keep them in the cases, unless they're the garbage cardboard ones. The classic jewel cases.

i collect chick tracts. or at least I did, until i lost my entire box. I guess I dont really go to places where they leave them anymore (arcades and malls) but if I see one on the ground (and they are always strategically placed on the ground, probably with the psycho who put it there watching) I will pounce on that fucker and start building a whole new collection.

My sister Does the same thing we use to have a lot of people who tried “converting” us in the city. They are always fun to read. I think we got started because of the Jontron d&d episode.

Smith & Wesson 3000 police surplus 12ga shotguns. I got my first one by trading a police surplus 357mag revolver to a friend.

After carrying it around for a couple years I really liked it, and took notice whenever I saw a gun dealer flogging off police surplus firearms, and would pick up one or two more. At the peak, I had over a dozen of them, then decided they weren't the best firearm to collect for investment purposes and stopped buying more.

You could of bought worse, I almost bought some iver hammers for goofs and giggles. The big issue is they use black powder and that ammo is notoriously expensive.

I collect weeb shit, plushies, 1/6 dolls, and dinosaur/prehistoric toys (especially Jurassic Park toys)

I collect old tech. It started with just enjoying getting cheap entertainment at e-waste prices and kept growing as I became more knowledgeable and interested in it. I also collect a couple more autistic things but I've put the brakes on consooming as of late to enjoy what I have.

I have a love/hate relationship with CDs. They're really good for how I like to listen to music, they're not dependent on the internet, and they're easy to put in a car, but I've been plagued with drive failures lately and it's become kind of a pain in the ass to keep using them.

I was using a DVD player with my Hi Fi system but I hated that the screen didn't display the track listing so I recently bought a Rotel CD player. My only gripe with CDs is storing them but I much prefer them over MP3.

This is a bit of a stretch but do you have any knowledge of old computers? I bought a 5 pack of brand new Verbatim datalife 8mm data cartridge and didn't know if it was actually useful or not.
I have some knowledge, and generally those kind of weird film cartridges are used as storage for mainframe computers. Unless you have one, I don't know how you'd go about using it. From a quick search for drives on eBay, it looks like you'd need a computer that can interface via SCSI, and then I don't know how you'd get the drivers for such a drive.

tl;dr not really.

I had the laser lens fall out of my CD changer and jam it. I was able to repair it with a bit of super glue. It's a pretty nice 6 cd model so I was glad it wasn't done for.

I have over 300 anime titles and counting on DVD and Blu-Ray—a good percentage of them are secondhand. I'd feel more proud of a VHS and Laserdisk copy if I had such players, and since they still pop up in thrift stores, it's a likelihood one day. I also have manga, less number of titles but much more books than the anime media. As is to be expected, over half are in storage for the time being.

There's also a growing collection of plushies, though that has slowed down for over a year because of lack of room.
