I jump around from brand to brand, but Dallmayr d'Oro is my favorite along with a local company that makes a lot of really great blends. I tend to prefer medium roast, freshly ground, and usually make cappuccinos but I also enjoy french pressed coffee. French press is also a great way to make cold brew, I find that if you take a gamble on a coffee and end up not liking the flavor then cold brewing it will smooth it out.
I've been meaning to grind my own, I'm fairly new to world of good coffee, so I haven't had the chance. What would you recommend & should I just use a good ol' mortar and pestle?
I use this Hamilton Beach grinder , some people who are more autistic about coffee than I am don't care for blade-style grinders and prefer the burr style but I don't personally have any issues with a cheap grinder. The kind of coffee you like to drink matters a bit, since french pressed coffee is better made with coarsely ground beans and espresso is better with a very fine grind.

I adore hopping around between different blends and brands, although don’t mind a good single origin either if I feel like the odd pour over here and there. I’m somewhat of a coffee autist too but I’m particular about what beans I’ll get. The really bad coffee snobs around my parts would have a good laugh at me for adding milk and any sugar to my coffee though but fuck off, a great medium/dark espresso blend as a latte or flat white cannot be defeated.
you ever have some good coffee after a month of bad coffee?
This was a while ago but hell yes.

It’s improved significantly now but for far too long it was almost impossible to find anything drinkable when I’d spend time in the US. It’s possible that Californians don’t know how to not burn milk or create anything texturally resembling microfoam though. I had some bad times.
