Christian theology thread for Christians - Deus homo factus est naturam erante, mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante

Nice people, just wanted some hot takes if anybody's got them.
I'll give you the hottest take in the thread (given its typical users): Churches like that aren't necessarily the devil and can be quite good quite often. Even the preaching is actually Biblical and challenging.

At my Church I've met quite a few people who were there because their church lacked young people and/or programs/organization for them. Your experience is fairly common. My recommendation would be to go for it, with the caveat of please don't pick fights about how catholicism is true and based and how all prots and evans are big dumb dumbs who need to get with the program. It's irritating when people do that sort of thing

Yeah they seem quite nice. By their own admission they are only vaguely under the protestant banner. Bible readings are nice, and there's a good sense of community

The one thing that bugs me is how they take communion. Its a little thing but they literally have tiny ketchup packets full of wine and the bread. Everything else is ok, but that's the one thing that bugs me as a Catholic.

If I could make a request, if anyone were to pray for my family to come to true Christianity I’d greatly appreciate it. It’d be nice to convince them through reason, however I find myself far too abrasive. Thanks.

I wanted to get some peoples thoughts on this. Let’s imagine a scenario where you have a Muslim and a Catholic. The Muslim 100% believes in Islam and follows all of its rules to the letter. The Catholic 100% believes in Catholicism, but picks and chooses which rules to follow. This isn’t saying that Islam is salvific, because it’s not, but in this scenario would God be more pleased with the Muslim who earnestly wants to follow God’s law (at least as far as he knows) over the Catholic who knows the fullness of the truth, and yet decides not to follow God’s law?

Neither please God, but the Catholic has committed a graver sin.

From Luke 12:

47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. 48 But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.

would God be more pleased with the Muslim who earnestly wants to follow God’s law (at least as far as he knows) over the Catholic who knows the fullness of the truth, and yet decides not to follow God’s law?
I'd say it depends...
- A little rural muslim boy who lives and dies from the flu and lucks into keeping the 10 commandments might be invincibly ignorant enough to be saved. However, the average muslim man who does his best to follow Islam and oppresses the infidels probably had a chance to change his ways.
- The Catholic (or any Christian in this case) has a bigger responsibility to stick to orthodoxy since they know better. Depending on what this hypothetical Christian picks and chooses, they might be fine-ish, or treading into millstone territory.

the martyrs were not suicidal and/or imprudent
Although when we look at the history books some of the later Roman martyrs went out of their way to get killed when they didn't have to.

Depends entirely on what is meant by 'picking and choosing which rules to follow'. This is what God says about those who perhaps go through the motions of following him but do not understand or care about the fullness of their sin:

"I hate, I despise your religious festivals;
your assemblies are a stench to me.
Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.
Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!" - Amos 5:21-24

"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise." - Psalm 51:16-17

And one can argue further that someone who has heard the truth has a greater responsibility than the one who has not, just as Israel did. But ultimately, each who rejects God will be judged accordingly. It's probably more accurate to say that God may be less displeased than to say he'd be more pleased. But his displeasure at the sins of both will be mighty, and neither has trusted in Jesus to cover them, though both might conceivably have said "Lord, Lord!" They do not know him.

A little rural muslim boy who lives and dies from the flu and lucks into keeping the 10 commandments might be invincibly ignorant enough to be saved.
Literally not possible for this to be the means of salvation. No-one who is old enough to keep to the law can do so. That's not to say that God can't choose to save him by another means for another reason, but it won't be this one.

that is not a suicidal tendencies (aka hatred for life). They did it to give a witness to the faith. The point of the Martyr is that he dies because of his faith, not the death itself. The Martyrs didn't pointlessly argued with people who are never going to convert via the intelectual rute, in a sarcastic and abrasive tone

May you all have a blessed Theophany/Epiphany

I would like to ask for people in the thread to pray for my cat, she is very sick and might not pull through. I have spent a considerable amount of money to keep her from suffering but this cat is worth more to me than any money in the world. While I may not go to church very often she always comes to sit on my lap and purrs when I listen to scriptures or read about the history of the Holy Roman Empire. To me church has never been about the building, preachers or specific Bible verses but about a community sharing values and love, and I consider my cat to be a member.

from one cat enjoyer to another, a prayer for your feline companion mon frère (inb4 an amateur theologian comes in here to sperg that all animals are obliterated upon death so you shouldn't care; This type is also quick to let you know how sure they are that all unbaptized fetuses are damned o algo.)

Anyways, came here to rant about lolbertarian/americanist christians who misinterpret God chiding the Israelites for choosing a King like the other pagan nations (1 Samuel 8) as a repudiation of monarchy and/or the state when that clearly wasn't the lesson especially in context of the rest of the Bible (the horrible state of Israel in the Kingless time of Judges, the fact a law of kings is already established by the time of Deuteronomy, the absence of democracy/republics/anarchy in any of God's ordained societies).

Everything good is going to be restored, and tbh I came to conclusion that all animals will go to heaven anyway. They're corrupt by our sin, but they themselves are pure and innocent and hold zero responsibility for the state of the world, so rules for humans aren't applicable to them.

God when threatening Nineveh, expressed concern for the many animals there as well as the humans to Jonah (Jonah 4:11). When Joshua went to sack Jericho, God commanded the animals to be killed as well as the people (Joshua 6). To me this shows that animals can be influenced by our sin, especially ones that we domesticate, did the flood kill the fish? I find it hard to conceive of how our sin can corrupt sea life's "personality".

Every once in a while whenever doubt creeps in, I get recommended ex-Christian content that I check and I'm often baffled by how painfully retarded these takes are. Since I don't have any other place to share these, I'll rant about the blog I came across ten minutes ago here.

...Ok but 1. Jesus didn't sacrifice himself to get brownie points for being "good and docile", will you mock someone a bit more tangible who will die for you the same way? 2. very convenient to leave out the fact that said lamb will become the lion that not only survives, but also clearly thrives, while those who did harm, don't

No, it's because of Satan

Alright, this one I can kinda get behind, I don't like these dissociative individuals who preach this kind of thing, because that's what a lot of detachment among believers seems to be preached as, a dissociation. What should be happening is inviting God into everything you do.

However, I'll take a single hour of reading the Bible over scrolling social media for five hours because damn let's be real all you are getting this way isn't fun lmao we all know this, believers and non-believers alike

At this point, anyone reading this might think, these people were raised in an unhealthy environment, deal with religious trauma and have wrong ideas about Christianity stemming from said trauma. The blog answers us itself: it also has a lot typical posts pointing out that "good Christians" who correct on theology and provide answers are actually as bad, if not worse, apparently it's a sign of them No True Scotsman'ing and excusing indoctrination, or whatever. There's literally no way to win with these people.

Slight PL but this deals me special kind of psychic damage because I've always been the type to dig for answers no matter how bad I felt about these answers. (Granted, sometimes some of these goundbreaking answers were just a new trap I got myself into, but that's just part of the journey.) It's a whole other topic but I think society is being taught to identify with trauma these days on the scale that the world has never seen before, and as someone who escaped the crab bucket of dysfunctional trauma coping it's really hard to watch overwhelming majority of people around me still drowning in their own shit but thinking they're in recovery. Of course every time I tried to bring this up, I was met with disdain and told your average postmodernist arguments, that it's all just my personal truth, that everyone's reality is different, what healed me will harm others, and so on. It's even worse now that I'm openly Christian, because my actual progress and recovery is seen as me joining a cult or something. No amount of secular data that proves basic Christian teachings will ever convince anyone, it's not the matter of evidence, never has been. I hate it here, guys.

Except your moral standards are utter garbage that you refuse to acknowledge regardless of how much proof you'll be presented with lmao I know I've been there myself

>Muslim
>Catholic

They're both idolators, so they'd both go to Hell. All people are judged by the same standards in the eyes of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I’d say this is bait… but I’ve seen too many people say this exact same thing regarding Catholics. (And even the Orthodox at times) I’m sure our resident Catholics could tell you that they, in fact, only worship the Christian God. Fair point on the Muslims though. A false religion isn’t salvific.

The Moslem would be condemned, as he would know of Christianity but Islam requires a jihad against it.
The Catholic would be deliberately ignoring dogmas of the faith, condemning him.
Both need to repent of their ways.

Christians are called to be stewards of the Earth, which includes animals and pets. You've been a damn good steward with your cat.

Whenever I read these thoughts of apostates/athiests/agnostics/"spiritual but not religious", I'm reminded of a comment on an InspiringPhilosophy video, in which the comment talks about how almost every anti-Christian argument tends to fall six degrees to wanting to do hedonism without being judged.

This was one of the most profound truths that guided me to God. I realized I was only rebelling against or denying the Lord for selfish reasons, and only to indulge pointless pursuits and addictions. I've lost nothing and gained everything by simply accepting His authority and morality.
