At this point it's hard to judge, I think. He probably knew that his son would be caught sooner or later, and that it was better for him to turn himself in than to go on the run. Well, in a sense it's an externality. You have a gun, it has upsides and downsides for you. Then that gun has upsides and downsides for everyone around you. Owning it is a deterrent when it's a credible threat you have a gun and they can't tell (also the reason you don't open carry, it's just going to say "shoot me in the back first" or, better yet, "steal my gun").
