I think what's interesting about that is Chris has seen other youtubers when they make videos and you can see a bunch of collectible stuff behind them. What they pay in legal fees is nothing compared to what they make in interest rates alone. Banks and credit card companies love people who can't pay because they get more from interest fees from delinquent accounts than they could ever make from someone who always pays the amount due in full.

No, even if he wasn't in jail he wouldn't be expected to. If you're at the point of garnishment, you've been given multiple warnings it is a possibility you'll get served an order (the letters are always vague it "might happen" because you can't say something is a certainty if it isn't because it's a FDCPA violation). I don't think I've heard of anyone actually attending their own hearing because they've already ignored it for ages. The creditor just needs a bank to sign off on it. The hearing is almost never near the creditor anyway. The fact this one is, is quite surprising. Also, I know he has been hit a lot but never looked at the documentation. It's quite possible a lot are the same debts, someone files, get nowhere, then sell the debt for pennies on the dollar to another agency, some underpaid person with a shit job, does a quick Google, sees Chris is an "internet celebrity" and thinks he has money and the cycle repeats itself.
If they actually attended a debt hearing, that's massively an outlier. Was there an issue like if they didn't they'd get foreclosed or something? Usually, it's just a judge rubber stamping stuff on deadbeats. Usually, the ones that do show up try to get out of the debt by some dumb technicality like claiming a debt collector called them, had a family member say it was them and provide their ssn, then admit they weren't the debtor. Then the debtor claims they disclosed the debt to an authorized third party. Or say they were harassed by being called at work (which is usually completely legal unless you pick up the call, verify then ask them not to; until you tell them otherwise, you're fair game). But for them to actually show up in good faith is incredibly rare. Also, if anyone is getting hassled by debt collectors, I'm happy to tell them how to get them to screw off or to get settlements for way less than what you owe.

Not really, clowns like this usually pay the minimum for years before defaulting and by then the company's already made more money than they ever loaned. Also they crank these lawsuits out like clockwork. I can't check OCIS right now but I bet they'd have a bunch of cases across the state, and they operate around the country.
