People really know of these Golden Age characters from merch than anything, not helped with how little actual exposure kids get to them.

Sounds more like deflection than of anything note-worthy related to the situation at hand. They overlooked Genndy's movie because it's too adult for them, now they suddenly want to care about animation? They don't care, they just don't want to lose their stranglehold on the industry.
Is it really a thousand a year? I mean, I suppose that makes sense with how many people go to art schools, but it just feels like there's so little actual shit OUT there being made. I heard somewhere online recently that normally Hollywood's filming 150-some odd TV show pilots this time of year, but now they're down to sub 10. I have to imagine animation is even worse off, since it's more niche than bog-standard TV pilots.
