Can Martial Arts be self-taught? - possibly retarded

Yes.
The method "Diamond Finger" is a "hard" exercise that strengthens the external components'. It belongs to the "hard" force of Yang. When the exercise attains its aim, it is possible to knock a hole in the chest with a finger and injure internal organs. When mastering this exercise, one should train his finger daily on a wall or a tree trunk, other objects can be also used. It is necessary to strike with your forefinger at a wall or other objects, starting with a slight blow and increasing gradually its force. Don't interrupt and don't stop your training. It is the first stage on the path to mastership. The skin tears off, muscles and sinews swell and hurt, but it is necessary to continue training for a long time without any hesitation and doubts. The soft skin becomes hard. After three years of training the finger will become like a tree branch. If you strike at some object with your finger, a visible finger print is left on it. A blow at a wood can make a hollow in it, a blow at a stone can break it, a blow at a human body can inflict a serious wound. Train this exercise diligently for three years, concentrate efforts only on one matter and your skill will become perfect if you have inflexible will. Indeed, there are outstanding men who make every effort. Beware of mistakes and wounds and move to the planned aim. One can also train the forefinger of the left hand. Don't stop at the midway in this exercise!

Yeah but I don't know if shoulder checking someone then gouging their eyeballs out is really considered the true spirit of martial arts though.
Depends on the discipline, the club and the culture. Did you know that there's a 'correct' way to bite someone? Learned it from my sensei and not a self defense class, as it happens.

JOIN A GYM.

Like, seriously. You can't even tell what's the good instructional if you have zero experience. You'll end up learning utterly useless shit and/or developing bad habits. Even something like fitness boxing is way better than pure DIY (*coach should be a boxer, not an aerobics instructor).

Just make sure you avoid retarded gyms which allows noobs to go hard to each other, hard sparring is unnecessary to reach I can beat average Joe level.

This is part of the reason why I never got into BJJ, not only is it extremely homosexual but I find a lot of crazy characters there that think getting injured makes them better disciples of Helio or something. Few times we had a guy cross training with us and it was fun.
That shouldn't be a reason not to get into BJJ. You're thinking of idiots in the field, not a representation of BJJ as a whole. The institute I attend for BJJ stresses physical health. They tell you not to let partners do deadlocks to the point of pain, to tap out before you feel anything. The point of BJJ training is not to hurt you.
You don't need to join a gym, wtf KatanaSenshi is saying. You shouldn't do BJJ at a gym. do it at an established training place. Go to the gym for strength training. BJJ may be the ultimate defense martial arts, but a small person will find it difficult to break out of any locks with someone outside your weightclass.

Small people can find it hard to put locks on. Some locks I could do well as long as the person wasn't too large and heavy boned. A tall man with heavy bones and thick muscle, I couldn't physically get my arms around him properly, let alone be strong enough to pull his bones into position. I used to train with my brother; I'm a short arse, he's a fucking giant. During one session the instructor told me to put an ankle lock on him. For fifteen fucking minutes he just sat there patiently as I tried to pull his foot out of position. He was perfectly co-operative and relaxed, his bones and muscle were just too huge and dense for me. The instructor eventually told me to give up, and sent me to spar with someone who was physically more my size.

I joined a Gym recently, but I don't know if they do martial arts training.

It's still extremely homosexual. The problem is, I'm often stuck with those sorts of people. Also, lots of the BJJ place around here are expensive, and attracts the sort of people that are covered in muscles that can do all the locks but get knocked out by smaller, skinnier guys the moment the gloves are (sometimes literally) off.

Ironically enough, in my area, the more affordable places are the ones that really provide good instruction, but the lack of a price gate attracts the types I mentioned earlier - guys that do meth, literal thugs, etc. But the BJJ guys seem to take it to 11. Purely my experience, so anyone reading this, explore your own explorations.

Striking balance between hard training and business viability has always been a problem for the good places.

Holy shit, I've met some interesting characters in martials arts, like some guys that do crystal meth regularly and a guy that did side work as a debt collector's thug, but never a pedo/hebe.
This particular club had an extensive reputation for being pretty brutal. At the time I joined, they had three members on an jujitsu international team. There were multiple alumni who were professional fighters. Also, members were congratulated and held up as examples of dedication and strength when they went in for orthopedic or joint replacement surgery, because it proved how hard they trained.

I dropped out after a couple years for a variety of reasons, amongst those being objections to the quality of the people who were making blackbelts by that stage, and four boughts of bronchitis in six months. Also, I sucked at it but still wanted to at least make the next belt but instead they wanted me to stop training and 'fundraise for the club' instead. (I wasn't the only one either.) Not long after I dropped out, word hit that our club's founder and main instructor was being investigated by the police for certain inappropriate interactions with early teenage girls.

The club basically collapsed in a matter of weeks. Doesn't exist anymore.
I do have a mate who does muay thai, but I'm wondering if it's all good to spar with him using a different technique like Jiu-Jutsu or Karate

The first 6 minutes of this video will tell you things about BJJ you may not realise

It is.

To explain to OP, who is likely not here anymore, and because I'm fucking insane, the only thing that will will you to self-teach yourself to learn martial arts is your own drive and fighting spirit, so to speak. If you want to learn, learn from everything. I am not responsible for anything that comes of this information to anyone that comes across it or uses it. You've been warned.

Oh and let me make a disclaimer: UFC style MMA is fucking propaganda based garbage ensured to make people think martial arts are all about turning into primates and humping each other for sport. I'm not kidding. You seriously fucking think that a sport where they bar participants from targeting parts of the body that will cripple them (mainly their careers if anything) or kill them is good to learn fighting? You're better off buying and setting up a targeting dummy or doing professional wrestling or even unsarcastically learn traditional mat wrestling than practice UFC MMA. MMA went to shit since they banned knee kicks and stomping on people and it turned into a spectator sport. Also, nothing is going to stop people on the street from targeting your back or your joints or your face or your soft underbelly no matter how many sit ups you do. Prepare for the unexpected; sport fighting is first and foremost its first predicate. If you like to mix up Muay Thai, Brazilian Jujitsu, and Krav Maga, great for you. Don't go thinking Dana White has your best interests.

Oh, and another thing: Martial arts can be very pretty. It can also get really ugly. Someone said it before but fights come out instantaneously, quickly, and violently. Don't look for shit to get into, but if you do, no one but dickless howler monkeys without anything better to do (ie losers) are the only people that miss out if you run away.

Do not tussle on the ground for too long. Get the fuck back up or learn capoiera or learn ground kicks or learn armbars and legbars and to move your lazy ass off the ground. Height is always the advantage in a fight. I don't care if you know all of the fucking ground games in the world, it doesn't mean shit if you get kicked in the nuts, in the stomach, get curbstomped into hamburger or get stabbed in the gut to tell you someone has a fucking knife too little too late. The only reason MMA has grapple ground games is because they tally points for that. The only thing anyone cares out there is either seeing someone dead or getting out alive. You are close to the grave if you decide to tussle on the ground and try to "position" someone. Fight or fucking die.

I am also going to get into some "wuwu" shit but I feel it's honestly necessary. UFC MMA and the Gracie Family will most likely be the cause of the death of many a meathead making them think the world is like Prehistoric Greece before Pankration where everyone fights like a savage. A mindset like that will get you killed like a stupid blind instinct driven beast too.

On the other note, fighting is about pain. There's no honest truth than that. It is also about walking and confronting that very thin line between life and death. You have to prepare your mind as much as your fitness and moves and whatnot. There are no ultimate techniques to win over anything. There is an ultimate technique for the next moment that comes at you however. Martial arts are all about managing conflict and adapting to what the fuck will come at you in a fight and being aware of all of your surroundings. Of course, I'm likely talking about street fighting too, which is also something to be wise of. Nothing is going to bar another opponent to try and get the upper hand over you. If there's any means to playing fair, then train. Cheap shots to the body are fair if someone wants to cause you more than bodily harm. If someone has a gun, I'll say this, as a karate teacher practicing on a firing range said to a student: Sometimes fist and kicks can't hit far enough.

Listen to your body and soul, not what everyone is trying to measure their dicks to. "The greatest fighting style" all goes to shit when someone is losing their shit mentally or realizes that life isn't fair to them like the other times they had in life. If they can't hone their mind and act like a bull in a china shop, you can see them a mile away as well as all of their openings. Even someone inexperienced in fighting at all but has had enough of someone's shit to be resolute enough to stand tall can take a good shot at someone running off of blind instinct and an unbalanced mind.

TRAIN YOUR MIND. Look up conceptual shit but understand it in your own waking time. Atheist Plus fags and the secular world that runs off of instant gratification is why UFC horseshit claims run the mainstream and all the suckers willing to lap it up. If all you know is bloodlust, someone can hook you like a fish and gut you like one too with it.

Don't go looking for "assassin's fist" or that shit. Outside of "mcdojo macarthyism" where every insecure faggot will point fingers and claim "no u fake" because of Bullshitdo.net, no one ever responsible would ever want a bunch of overcompetitive, egotistic, and powerhungry dipshits who would gladly use violence and strongarmed boasting as a way to get anything in life to ever learn of their style. All martial arts should be treated like weapons and they should act like weapons: no one wants to use them nor plan to, but the act of training to use them to learn to be responsible with them is a good thing, and if they have to be used, pain is a good deterrent, as well as death for more extreme situations. Stay humble; if you wanted to be famous, you should had tried football or boxing.

If I pissed you off speaking about this, good. Centuries of people learning how to defend themselves shouldn't have to crumble because of corporate greed, freeloading egotism, overt secularist materialism, and turning people into animals to ensure people can't fight back because jews or something.

The way I see it, it would be like learning freestyle instead of actual soccer. You can learn the philosophical, spiritual or artistic aspects, the aproppiate movements and techniques, but only so far. You'd lack the "martial" aspect of it, because you could never train how to apply it with an opponent, sparring is essential.

I also don't think there's a physical discipline that can be learned without external input, you can't judge your own movements from your perspective. Hell, even going to the gym needs at least someone experienced to guide you through the exercises. I've known dudes who tried to lift more than they could without the proper knowledge and ended up breaking something in their body.

You can probably pick up a few basic moves through video instruction but not anything substantial beyond that.

Probably better than going to this guy for instructions though.

Its like asking if you can learn the guitar without ever playing one. Sure you can learn some stuff, but the core will never happen.

You have to actually practice with someone for any combat style martial art.
