UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The only thing that could fix Britain after all this bad news is a new carry on film, Say, that Nolan chap is using IMAX 70mm cameras for his odyssey, we could use them to make our own carry on film. Say, about a Brits odyssey about coming home from a night with the lads in the pub, and the missus worrying for him as she has to deal with other suitors willing to take her to Tobys.

Listen, Britain is not at the state of thinking the suitors will be brown muslims in their grooming gangs. I mean, I'd eagerly get drunk and write the screenplay [drunk writing is fun] but I don't have the money or resources to turn that into a film ok.

Maybe I could work for 10 years, save up and get the movie made on film. Who knows?

Elon musk just agreed to fund Mel Gibson to do a more authentic version to the tune of 100M, so shoot your shot.

Not sure who first posted, but it was about Liz Truss being decent. Watched her in multiple interviews and I don't know if it's the case of "when a person in government is more likeable/is more free" but she genuinely comes across as great? Sounds like she got totally fucked by the bank of England and her very own "Tories".

She seems to have shot herself in the foot with the mini-budget and will may never live down her time as prime minister being outlasted by a head of lettuce.

Did you not read what I said? Is context, further information not important to you? You seem the like kind of person to think anything the BBC spews out is 100% correct and anyone else who says otherwise is a fucking nazi who needs to die.

Please fucking kill yourself and rate me as MATI. Cunt.

Like Truss's speaking ability all you want, she still did too much, too fast economically and paid the price for it.

Absolutely not. Can you imagine if modern writers made a Carry On film today? What do you think the jokes would be? They'd be "reclaimng" the Carry On format.

I don't care for AI slop, but if it got better and someone put together Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jacques, Sid James, Joan Simms, Kenneth Williams and Barbara Windsor for a properly saucy script of "Carry On Seething" then I'd absolutely watch it.

I'm also willing to settle for a pisstake episode of On The Buses.

Great first someone’s talking about farting now I'm meant to vore the povos. Who's completing the trifecta and getting their toes out?
Can you send this in as a superchat to Null, it’s the kind of thing he enjoys reading out.

I’d think a Hancock’s Half Hour would work well for these trying times. Shame AI is still complete shit at voice acting.

Just a reminder that this year marks a quarter of a century since the Bradford riots. In this, Manningham WMC was burned down, with the doors intentionally obstructed from the outside with people in the club.

Those trapped inside gave a statement in 2011, saying they have "no bitterness".

The writing has been on the wall for 25 fucking years and nobody cares.
