UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

They really do make these people on production lines like I said.
It's really pick your joke. Do we make the crack that every last thing about them, from their haircuts to their choiuce of glasses, is selected by the same PR team who think they know what the public want to see?

Or do we go for the even more low hanging fruit and ask if the same wealthy donors buy their outfits?

It appears there's more in-fighting within Restore again which stems from Rupert Lowe's "left-wing" talking points about ethno-nationalism etc. Carl Benjamin (Akkad Daily) seems to be flip-flopping on this and I'm 100% certain he reads the farms (pls define British people Carl).

I don't really understand why so many people in this country and Europe have such an issue with this idea of being homogeneous when countries like China, Korea and Japan have been for their entire existence in most cases. I guess we're too afraid of being wacist.

People also aren't happy that Rupert attended the Spectator summer party 2026which had attendees ranging from Kemi Badenoch, Richard Tice, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Morgan McSweeney, the list goes on.

Also heard that Rupert will be on the Joe Rogan podcast soon.

One almost wonders if having a camera to record doorstep interactions could be a good thing.
If you do get one, treat it like a weapon: keep it hidden and don't brag about it and only use it in times of dire need. It doesn't physically protect you from getting your ass whooped and if you ever lay a beating on a paki/gypsy/Keir Starmer on your own doorstep the footage can and will be used against you (if the authorities know about it).

Dale Vince has said out loud women's football needs to be profitable to deserve funding after pulling his and getting the usual raft of complaints as a result.

Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince says criticism of their decision to cut their women's team for 2026-27 is "unfair".

The Gloucestershire outfit confirmed this week the team would close due to a need to "concentrate resources" towards getting the men's team back into the English Football League.

The club also ended its partnership with Hartpury University, whose elite training centre provided football for girls aged nine to 16.

Vince said Forest Green have faced a £1.5m loss of income every season since their relegation to the National League in 2024, which will no longer be mitigated by parachute payments next campaign.

He added they had been in discussion with Hartpury - who already have a women's team of their own Hartpury Women FC - around fielding a joint team but without them faced funding the six-figure cost alone.

"FGR have been supporting women's football for over a decade, the criticism we've faced in the last few days for this is entirely misplaced - it's unfair in fact," Vince said in a statement.

"Economic realities have forced us to cut spending in many areas, we already cut funding to the system for boys as part of that.

"The women's team cuts have come at the very end and only due to a last minute let down - that's hardly indicative of a club that does not care about women's football."

In a previous statement Hartpury said: "We've been proud to work alongside Forest Green Rovers to deliver the emerging talent centre and support the development of girls' football in the region.

"Following Forest Green Rovers' decision not to operate a women's first-team for 2026-27 season our priority is to explore how Forest Green Rovers' emerging talent centre can continue through our own successful Hartpury Women FC."

Forest Green Rovers Women played in the fifth tier of English women's football pyramid, in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division and finished second in the table last season.

Hattie Jones, who captained the side for the past three seasons, said the closure sent a message the club did not value women's or girls' football.

"If you think about how this is then going to impact many, many young girls that are playing, I think the message is we're not valued, 'we don't really care, we do it because we have to'," Jones told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

Vince reiterated that once the men's club had achieved promotion back to League Two the hope was to reinstate women's, girls and boys football at the club.

"Our focus on getting back to the EFL is the most logical thing for us to do," he said.

"Once we have achieved that we can restore all of the programs we've not been able to afford this year - the boys', girls' and the women's team.

"That's our plan to get back to where we were in all respects, in the EFL and with the wherewithal to fund the things we believe in, which, yes, does include football for women and girls and boys."

Bob Vylan's suing the BBC
Punk duo Bob Vylan announced plans to sue the BBC for alleged defamation after airing their 'Death to the IDF' chants at last summer's Glastonbury Festival.
The BBC apologised after livestreaming the act's performance in June last year, with critics accusing both band and corporation over alleged anti-Semitism.
Avon and Somerset launched a criminal investigation, but no further action was taken - with the force saying there was 'insufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction'.
The group, fronted by 35-year-old Bobby Vylan whose real name is Pascal Robinson-Foster, had concerts cancelled in the immediate aftermath of last summer's controversy - including festivals in Manchester and France as welll as a scheduled gig in Germany.
Visas were also denied for a scheduled tour taking in events in the US.
Bob Vylan's entire performance in a Saturday afternoon slot at Glastonbury - including chants of 'Free Palestine' and 'Death to the IDF', the Israeli Defense Forces - was live-streamed on the BBC iPlayer but was later taken down.
Nevertheless, the corporation was lambasted for failing to cut the broadcast immediately after 'anti-Israel' chanting involving members of the crowd - then issued an apology for what it described as the band's 'utterly unacceptable' sentiments.
Now, in a post on Instagram, Bob Vylan revealed plans to sue the corporation whose new director-general Matt Brittin only took over from Tim Davie in May this year.

The message stated: 'We have decided to take legal action against the BBC. In the immediate aftermath of our performance at Glastonbury 2025, The BBC wasted no time in placing labels upon us that did not, do not and never will fit.
'As a corporation that receives the majority of its funding from the public, it has disappointingly continued to prove how little it represents the interests of the people and our access to unbiased news and information.
'The BBC have attempted to silence those that oppose the heinous crimes taking place in Palestine, instead labelling them as anti-semitic, editing their speeches, removing their content and even blocking the release of documentaries that challenge the desired narrative of The BBC and its top brass.
'These responses are unacceptable. So seeing the opportunity to remind them the power of the people that they are attempting to silence, we had no choice but to take on this fight. In fact, we take great pleasure in serving them that reminder in court.'
The group formed in their hometown of Ipswich in 2017 and have since gone on to release five albums including 2020 debut We Live Here.
The BBC previously admitted it should have cut the broadcast of what it called 'utterly unacceptable' and 'antisemitic' sentiments in Bob Vylan's Glastonbury set.
The live stream continued for 40 minutes until the end of Bob Vylan's performance.
Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis later described Bob Vylan's chants as having 'very much crossed a line'.

She said in a statement: 'We are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.'
And the BBC said days after last summer's broadcast: 'Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC's output but one performance within our live streams included comments that were deeply offensive.

'The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves.
'We welcome Glastonbury's condemnation of the performance.
'The performance was part of a live stream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer. The judgement on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines.
'In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand.
'The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.

'In light of this weekend, we will look at our guidance around live events so we can be sure teams are clear on when it is acceptable to keep output on air.'
The BBC has been approached for further comment today.
In a House of Commons statement following last year's Glastonbury, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy repeated the Government's condemnation of what she called 'appalling and unacceptable' scenes at the festival.
She piled pressure on then-director general Mr Davie to explain why the controversial performance by Bob Vylan was broadcast live and why the feed had not been immediately cut when chants of 'death to the IDF' began.
Ms Nandy told MPs: 'I expect answers to these questions without delay. I have made that view clear to the BBC leadership and I will of course update the House as soon as I can.
The Culture Secretary also revealed she had spoken to members of the Jewish community over the weekend, including those who attended Glastonbury.
'They have raised a number of concerns about imagery and slogans that were on display at the festival this weekend,' she added.
'And I am told this led them to establish their own safe space at the festival. As a Government we take this incredibly seriously.

'We are urgently looking into the specifics of these alarming reports and reaching out to the festival organisers.'
Ms Nandy said the Government 'strongly supported' freedom of expression and would defend the right to artistic expression.
But she added: 'We do not accept incitement to violence, hate speech, or anti-Semitism is art.
'There is a clear difference between speaking out for Palestine, which is the right of everybody in this House, and everybody in our country, and anti-Semitism which is not, and will never be.
'When the rights and safety of people and communities are at risk, and when our national broadcaster fails to uphold its own standards, we will intervene.'
Bobby Vylan responded at the time by posting on Instagram, 'I said what I said', and told of being 'inundated with messages of both support and hatred'.
Robinson-Foster wrote: 'As I lay in bed this morning, my phone buzzing non stop, inundated with messages of both support and hatred, I listen to my daughter typing out loud as she fills out a school survey asking for her feedback on the current state of her school dinners.
'She expressed that she would like healthier meals, more options and dishes inspired by other parts of the world.

'Listening to her voice her opinions on a matter that she cares about and affects her daily, reminds me that we may not be doomed after all.
'Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place.
'As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us.
'Let us display to them loudly and visibly the right thing to do when we want and need change.
'Let them see us marching in the streets, campaigning on ground level, organising online and shouting about it on any and every stage that we are offered.
'Today it is a change in school dinners, tomorrow it is a change in foreign policy.'

It really is peak Yookay seeing a roadman effortlessly confound the police and escape on a stolen E-bike.

Had a conversation with a British friend, He criticized the way my country treats Arab criminals by either kneecapping them or shooting them dead, while Arab terrorists usually get the axe and also a bonus house demolition prize. "It's inhumane and barbaric" he says.

So I asked him if he prefers the way the UK does it - he still hasn't answered.

What do you mean?
Who the fuck cares about Rogan in the current year? How does the MAGA podcast bro scene help him here? British people are not American, what works (worked) there will not work here. This is Carl of Swindon's big issue, he sees everything through that lens and gets every prediction wrong as a result.
The MAGA grift is in decline anyway.

EDIT: Farage is right, Restore is the Twitter party.

lol the raped relive their trauma. I am not saying Farage is anything, I am speaking to Lowe's terminally onlinisms costing him any hope of making Restore into something.
If I were to give my honest advice for what it's worth it would be: distance himself from MAGA/Trump, cut the influencers out who publicly embarrass you with ridiculous hype merchant tactics and appeal to normal offline people more. Getting likes on twitter or earning fans in America will not win you elections here.

Another two-tier video has been circulating on twitter, showing a boy being assaulted by a group before getting slammed into a shutter by a policewoman, leaving the assailants to flee the scene. The victim, drunk and likely assuming he was still being mobbed as opposed to dealing with law enforcement, throws a punch before realising.

HEayh4GUMNwhynwZ.mp4
He is then roughly shoved into the police car, with the aggressive policeman giving the camera a guilty glance once he realised he was being recorded.

C9v78a_BoKbMbI6y.mp4
Birmingham has responded to the video, saying the only resulting arrest from the incident was the victim, arrested and charged with assault of a police officer. They go onto say that they have no concerns, and are even satisfied with the police conduct.

They now have an updated statement where they recognise that maybe the guy they arrested was assaulted first (before being assaulted by the police again).
