UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I usually don't care about this stuff but this caught my attention. The iPlayer for each world cup match has a face to face graphic of the captain or the best player on the teams which is fair enough but for Australia v Egypt it's Mo Salah and some random black player despite 9 of Australia's starting 11 being white. If i was a more cynical person I'd think the BBC were trying to push an agenda..

Wondering if that councillor likes to cycle along that path and with the warmer weather people are outside more often. Standing with friends when there isn't enough seating and blocking the path a bit.

It's exactly the petting and personal crap that councillor do.
In my local area, some cafe bought a bunch of garden furniture, and was drilling/screwing it all to the pavement. Something tells me they didn't have planning permission for that.

This is a green councilor though, so I doubt it.

Andy Burnham did a Q&A on Reddit. Of course he avoided answering any scathing questions, but here are some 'highlights'. Blame null for any bad formatting this quote system sucks.
Q: Hi Andy, I assume you're going to call an election? If not why not?
A: No. As I said in my speech on Monday, I'm going to work to the 2024 manifesto

Q: What will you do to fix the housing crisis?
A: Launch the biggest council house building programme since the post-war period

Nothing else will fix it.

Q: Are you prepared to negotiate return agreements with countries like Afghanistan for refugees who have had their asylum claims rejected? Particularly those who have committed serious and violent crimes?

Kemi Badenoch chimes in on her own reddit account!
Q: Hi Andy, Kemi here. Whilst you’re answering softball questions on Reddit, I’ve been in Yorkshire answering questions from the press.

You’re going to be Prime Minister soon so it’s time to start acting like one. Come out from hiding, face a proper press conference and submit yourself to scrutiny and some tough questions.
Are you up for it?
A: Fair challenge, Kemi - but don’t forget it’s only two weeks since I faced questions from 74,000 members of the public in Makerfield!

Q: Hi Andy, thanks for doing the AMA.

Youth unemployment is getting ridiculous, young people can apply for hundreds of jobs and not even get an interview. Companies appear to not want to train people anymore and want the finished article from the offset. What, if anything, are you looking to do about this?
A: I’ve talked to my son a lot about this and I realise sending applications without responses can be quite soul-destroying for young people. I also dislike the modern trend of only offering interviews on Teams or Zoom as I don’t think that enables young people to get their personality and passion over.

On the back of the Milburn report, we need a significant change in the way we support young people. We do need fairer recruitment processes, as well working with employers to increase the supply of work placements, apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships.
I highly doubt Burnham Jr is struggling to find a job.
I went through the effort to look up his son, dude went UCL for 'Caribbean and Latin American History' and waltzes into a fulltime labour party caseworker job right after .
Q: Thanks for the AMA Andy, is it time to abolish the triple lock? Or at least have that discussion?
A: I appreciate there's a lot of debate about this but it is important that the commitment in the manifesto stands.

Q (from u/This_Charmless_Man): Hi Andy. There's been a lot of talk about helping the North and the deprivation that exists there. I just wanted to ask if there are any plans for the South West as we seem to frequently be forgotten about and have similar levels of neglect and deprivation.
A: I understand completely what you are saying and yes, No10 North is intended to give the South West the same backing as Greater Manchester. Expect to see me out and about in the South West soon when I will be explaining more.

As much as I want to return every single Afgani in this country, something inside of me seethes at the thought of us giving them millions and the deal probably won't even properly function anyway. Just throw them out of the plane with old Falkland parachutes.

That Andy guy is not getting fuck all done in this country.

I can't seriously imagine any civil servant going along with this 'No 10 North' idea. Burnham has what, just over two years in power? Any civil servant will be able to dig their heels in long enough until he gets booted out again. Perhaps some junior civil servants or maybe some difficult ones will be sent there, but no one of any consequence that's for sure.

One almost wonders if having a camera to record doorstep interactions could be a good thing.
100%. however I would absolutely avoid internet connected shit like Ring cameras and the like if you can. While they're relatively cheap and fairly idiot proof I absolutely would not trust those companies any further than I could throw them, especially since they happily hand footage over to the plod/Governments with no hesitation.

If you're getting a camera set it up as an actual CCTV loop (as in only records locally, no net access) and if you have to give the cops footage for any reason never, ever give them the original drives. Insist on emailing it to them or making them a copy and then make one for yourself as well just to be on the safe side.

(I believe you it happened, I’m saying they couldn’t charge you if you did .)
Given how incestuous the relationship is between the CPS and the plod they absolutely could have charged him. Getting a conviction is a different matter, but of course that's not necessarily even their goal. Remember as the old saying goes the process is the punishment. Getting arrested, spending a night or two in the cells, being put on BS bail conditions for months etc are all enough to potentially fuck up a lot of people's lives without ever going near an actual court.

Quick news one, working myself up to a Guardian dump

They're finally getting around to charging those Ukranians who blew up the Nord stream pipeline.

German prosecutors have filed charges against a Ukrainian national over the blowing up of the Nord Stream pipelines under the Baltic Sea in 2022.

The suspect, named only as Serhii K under German privacy laws, is alleged to have led and co-ordinated the attack on the pipelines that transported natural gas from Russia to Germany, German media reports say.

They say he is the same person arrested in Italy last summer and extradited to Germany in November. He has denied involvement.

No-one has admitted carrying out the attack, and Ukraine has denied involvement in the case which may have serious implications for its relationship with Germany.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-63636181
Berlin law firm Menaker, which represents the Ukrainian man, told Reuters news agency that an indictment had been served on Wednesday. It gave no details of the charges.

Federal prosecutors confirmed for another news agency, AFP, that a man had been charged over the explosion.

According to German public broadcaster DW, which cited German media reports, the suspect is accused of leading a team of seven accomplices in an operation to destroy three of the four Nord Stream gas pipelines.

He is also accused of attacking civil energy infrastructure, as well as causing an explosion and destroying infrastructure.

The attack released record-breaking amounts of methane into the Baltic Sea and left the multi-billion dollar infrastructure inoperable.

A month after his arrest, a second Ukrainian suspect was detained at his home close to Poland's capital Warsaw on another arrest warrant issued by Germany.

Although Nord Stream 2 never went into operation, Nord Stream 1's two pipelines had provided a steady supply, along a 1,200km (745-mile) stretch of the Baltic Sea, from the Russian coast to north-eastern Germany.

Shortly before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany cancelled its process to approve Nord Stream 2, which was 100% owned by Russian gas giant Gazprom. Months later, Russia shut down Nord Stream 1, blaming problems with equipment.

Then, on 26 September 2022, several explosions were recorded that ruptured three of the four pipelines.

Mystery surrounded the identity of the saboteurs, with Russia itself coming under Western suspicion, and Moscow blaming the US and UK.

There is no evidence so far linking any state to the attacks.

Many Ukrainians consider whoever destroyed Nord Stream to be heroes for taking out an important revenue source for Russia, and struggle to understand why Germany - a key ally of Ukraine - is pursuing this prosecution.

Germany is Ukraine's biggest source of European military aid.
They're investigating two of the officers who helped murder Henry Nowak. Naturally the BBC articles spends more time whining about muh racism and the protests

Two police officers are being investigated for potential gross misconduct following the case of Henry Nowak, who was handcuffed and arrested as he lay dying, the police watchdog has said.

Nowak, 18, was fatally stabbed by Vickrum Digwa with a large blade in December 2025, which he said he carried on grounds of his Sikh faith. He then lied to police at the scene, falsely claiming he was the victim of a racist attack.

Digwa was jailed for life in June, with a minimum term of 21 years.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said evidence suggested the two officers who arrived first may have breached professional standards.

The IOPC said the investigation relates to potential failures by the officers to recognise Henry Nowak needed urgent medical help and the decision to arrest and handcuff him rather than provide first aid.

The watchdog added: "There's also an indication one of the officers may have breached the standard relating to authority, respect and courtesy, for appearing to dismiss Henry saying he had been stabbed."

The BBC revealed last week it took officers eight minutes to discover Henry's fatal stab wound, after arriving at the scene.

It said Henry's family, who come from Chafford Hundred in Essex, had been told of its decision.

IOPC director of engagement Derrick Campbell said: "Our investigators met with Henry's family earlier this month where we were able to discuss our investigation with them in depth, now that criminal proceedings have concluded.

"Two officers will now face gross misconduct investigations. There is clear evidence that public confidence in the force may have been seriously harmed by this incident, and that is a factor we must consider when assessing the evidence.

"The serving of gross misconduct notices does not necessarily mean that disciplinary proceedings will follow.

"At the end of our investigation we will decide whether any officers should face disciplinary proceedings."

The IOPC said it had expanded its independent investigation following recent discussions with Henry's family, who have made formal complaints about the force.

It added it was examining the actions of the officers at the scene, including the decision to arrest Henry and apply handcuffs along with the first aid provided, and the decisions and actions of HIOWC control room staff.

It said this included the handling of calls relating to the incident and information passed on to the attending officers and the ambulance service.

The IOPC said it was investigating whether the race or religion of either Henry or the Digwa family impacted on the actions and decision making of the officers.

It said it would also look at whether officers' decisions were influenced by assumptions or prejudice relating to community tensions at the time.

In the months before Nowak's death the nearby Highfield House Hotel in Portswood was the focus of of anti-immigration protests, with counter protests held by Stand Up To Racism.

Complaints made by Henry's family about differences in how Henry was treated by officers compared to how Digwa and his family members were treated upon their arrests, will also be examined.

In a statement read outside court in June, Henry's father Mark Nowak compared his son's "inhumane and degrading" treatment by police, to the "decency" officers showed his murderer.

Hampshire police has previously apologised to the Nowak family for the way Henry was treated by its officers.

Campbell added: "It is also an important part of our role to identify whether any changes are needed to national or force policies or procedures, to improve police practice.

The IOPC said it will share its provisional findings with Henry's family and Hampshire police and their views will be considered before any final decisions are made.

Missiles including wheelie bins and chairs were thrown at officers during protests in Southampton
Protests erupted in Southampton on 2 June after police bodycam footage showing the two officers interactions with Henry as he lay dying was released.

Twelve police officers and a police dog were injured during the protests which initially saw crowds demonstrating outside the city centre police station before gathering close to the Digwa family home.

Following the protests leaders in Southampton's Sikh community called for "peace and harmony".

The Council of Southampton Gurdwaras - which represents the city's Sikh community - condemned Digwa's actions and said violence on the streets should never be tolerated.

The attorney general's office has since referred Digwa's sentence to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient sentence (ULS) scheme.

A full inquest into Henry Nowak's death is due to be held in Winchester next year.

Burnham-backed taskforce wants businesses that hire more non-whites to receive more government (tax-payer) funding.
Businesses that hire and promote young ethnic-minority people should be rewarded with greater access to government funding, a task force backed by Andy Burnham has urged.
The Growth and Skills Levy should be used to “incentivise employers to improve recruitment, retention, and progression outcomes for black, Asian, and mixed heritage young people”, said a report from the Race Equity in Employment Task Force.
However, the Conservatives said the proposals risked “introducing unfairness in the name of equality”.
The task force was chaired by Mr Burnham, now the MP for Makerfield and expected to soon become the next prime minister.
Large companies are required to pay the Growth and Skills Levy and can then tap into the pot to fund qualifying apprenticeships and training schemes.
The task force said: “Employers should commit a defined proportion of their levy funds towards high-quality training, apprenticeships, and progression pathways that directly benefit ethnic minority young people.”
It envisages companies agreeing to new diversity targets, publishing progress alongside ethnicity pay gap reports.
“Enhanced levy flexibilities or matched funding should be conditional on demonstrable progress, such as increased hiring rates, improved apprenticeship completion, or reduced progression gaps, with eligibility independently reviewed every two years,” it said.
Other recommendations include setting targets to reduce racial disparities in the job market in each region of the country and linking public procurement contracts to social goals, including youth employment plans.
The report argued that ethnic-minority young people were under-represented in apprenticeships, and noted that black teenagers and young adults were the most likely group to be not in employment, education or training (Neets) between 16 and 24.
Britain has more than one million Neets, with companies frequently blaming rising employment taxes and increases in the minimum wage for pricing inexperienced candidates out of the jobs market.

Neet rates are highest among black young people, according to Office for National Statistics data and the Youth Futures Foundation, with 15.2pc out of work or training. They are followed by mixed-race 16 to 24-year-olds and white young people, with 13.2pc classed as Neets.
Youths with a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background are next, at 12.6pc, while young adults of Chinese ethnicity have the lowest rate, at 8.7pc.
White youths are significantly more likely than those from ethnic minorities to become apprentices, said the report, titled No Talent Wasted.
In contrast, data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service indicate that white school leavers are the least likely of all major ethnic groups to go on to university.
Andrew Griffith, the shadow business secretary, said the proposal to use funding to incentivise hiring of ethnic minorities risked dividing the nation.
“We should not be pitting different racial groups against each other. This tone-deaf report ignores the real reasons all our young people are struggling,” he said.
“Instead of focusing on discriminatory race quotas and equality of outcomes, the solution is to ensure everyone has opportunities by reforming welfare, lowering taxes and cutting employment red tape. We need a common-sense approach, not a failed obsession co-chaired by Andy Burnham over race.”
Sir Mel Stride, the shadow chancellor, said the measures would not help grow the economy despite Mr Burnham’s stated goal to improve living standards across the nation.
“Requiring companies to abide by state-imposed quotas for ethnic minorities in order to get funding for training and apprenticeships is not backing growth; it is introducing unfairness in the name of equality,” he said.

This is a green councilor though, so I doubt it.
Scottish Greens are incredibly petty and more unhinged than their English counterparts.

I knew a councillor who took photos of vans belonging to local businesses that were "misusing" loading bays (correctly using them, I saw it first hand) and posted it on social media. They weren't electric vehicles!

Patrick Harvey and Lorna Slater are people I would struggle to find good things to say about.

Feeling particularly demoralised today seeing news of that disgusting paki being released from prison and the civil service/courts wringing their hands and claiming to be unable to deport.

Who the fuck runs the UK? Who is actually in charge?
Just a reminder that Parliament is supreme and a simple majority is sufficient to just pass a bill deeming a person to be guilty of whatever they are accused and instantly a non-person and determine the punishment. Abolish the Supreme Court and whatever other barriers in the same breath. There is no excuse, unlike in America or Canada or Australia, because Parliament is the highest legal authority. They can simply say "John Smith is guilty of watching midget porn, the sentence is hanging upside from an Oak tree until death" and it will be so.

It shouldn't have to require a return to Medieval legal practices, but that is an option they will be forced to use eventually if they don't open any of the pressure release valves.

A: I understand completely what you are saying and yes, No10 North is intended to give the South West the same backing as Greater Manchester. Expect to see me out and about in the South West soon when I will be explaining more.

So confirmation that ‘No10 North’ is just for Manchester, and fuck the likes of Liverpool, Burnley, Leeds, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Middlesbrough, Hull etc. There’s so much deprivation in the north, entire towns and villages decimated by anti-industrialisation, and all this Manc twat can say is he’ll do more for Manchester.

Mancs aren’t popular in my neck of Norf FC. This certainly isn’t going to help Manchester or their residents’ popularity.

Fuck you and your two plastic football teams, ya cunt.

Mancs aren’t popular in my neck of Norf FC. This certainly isn’t going to help Manchester or their residents’ popularity.
Us in this part of Norf FC don’t even consider Manchester to be Northern. He can get tae fuck with all this North No10 shit. Only Mancs (maybe) give a fuck about Manchester, people want to see changes locally. Whether that is getting rid of the imports, better services, job opportunities, whatever.

He’s going to be an absolute useless cunt and I hope it’s at least funny. I’d put money on plenty of u-turns for a start.
