UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's a question of wealth to population. The UK may not have the natural resources of the USA but then it doesn't have a population of 360m either and doesn't need to. Luxembourg has fuck all natural resource it exploits but is pretty filthy rich. Plus times have changed - we don't need to be exporting coal in a nuclear age. There is so much that could be done to raise the quality of life of the British so I don't accept at all any messaging of "we would rather be poor but free", because I'm very sure we could be rich and free.
Coal ? Coal ? Get out of the 70's ! It would be more about rare earth minerals, water and oil.
I think you are confused. GDP measures income flow, not accumulated wealth. Two different things.
I appreciate that per capita GDP is a much better measurement and there is no reason why if we were economically well managed we could be doing much better.

Without digging you out ( too much ! ) Luxembourg is a particulalry poor example for your argument - it does indeed not have the natural resources, but a lot of the high earners don't live in the country -

While Luxembourg’s GDP per capita figures indicate immense economic output, it is important to note that these numbers are heavily skewed by the country's unique labor market. A substantial portion of Luxembourg's workforce consists of cross-border commuters (frontaliers) who live in neighboring France, Germany, and Belgium. Because their labor contributes to the nation's GDP but their residency is not counted in the population tally, the per capita figure is significantly elevated.

Personally, I'd want my high earners to be English and live in England ( and spending their earnings in England ).

tldr I don't think this kWh statistic is much more useful than GDP
It's also completely fucked in countries like Norway, with abundant cheap hydropower.
Here's a comparison of a few different metrics (with some simple normalization to try to make them comparable):

Seems more like there’s a threshold where the price of electricity is no longer a major factor in gdp and many countries are at that level. What happens if you look at the top 5 gdp countries and compare it to their electricity supply?

I have no idea of the major washing machine brands over there but here we have sealed drums to prevent bearings being changed and seals designed to prompt a divorce half way through removal.
Yup, you have to buy the cheap brands such as Beko (made in, and designed for, Turkey) to have anything where spare parts are available or even relevant.
Westerners are just expected to recycle it and spend €800 on a new one, for benefit of line go up.

Wes Streeting has backed Andy Burnham so unless someone else (please let it be Lammy) decides to challenge Burnham then he is pretty much been handed the keys to the country.

Really makes you think that Andy practically hop, skipped and jumped into a PM support from being mayor of Manchester all by winning the easiest possible seat he could even be presented with. People thought Rishi was helicoptered in but Burnham's giving even him a run for his money with this one.

Interestingly, both if you pick the top 5 countries in absolute GDP and top 5 countries in GDP per capita there's an inverse correlation between the electricity metric and GDP per capita (more strikingly in the top 5 gdp per capita).

Restore are absolutely correct to try and topple GDP from its pedestal. It's not a meaningless statistic but for years its been used as a metric for success justifying all sorts of socially destructive measures. It has to be the single most misused statistic there is by this point.
You can explain this until the cows come home, people dont get it. GDP measures specific bits of economic activity, and it’s used to justify all sorts. Maybe we should be like Bhutan and measure gross national happiness
the understanding that personal and economic prosperity are driven by access to cheap energy.
any politician who damages their country’s access to cheap energy is a traitor and should be treated as such. We need nuclear, and j til we’ve got that on stream in twenty years we need to drill and mine. Cheap energy would transform us.

They seem to think the government just has a total grip on a poor bewildered populace. They fail to realise most people in NK and China are just as lunatic-minded as their rulers. Most North Koreans aren't forced to worship Kim like he's some sort of divinity; many of them quite honestly believe it.
If you knew anything about South Korea. You would worship him like a God. South Korea makes North Korea look tame in comparison. At least the corruption is somewhat manageable North Korea. And you're not under the thumb of the oligarchical Samsung.

You like terms like "hole" or the like to refer to those regions
Hole is our word, moid; we prefer you use “t’pit”.
A note: Tim has a peculiarity in pronouncing DUI [driving under the influence] as deewee
I assume that’s because he is pronouncing DWI, driving while intoxicated. Same shit, I think it might just be a thing of locally what phrasing did they use in the statute.

Anyone else pissed off they'll all be fucking off on their summer jollies (that are more than most of us get in a year) and leaving the country without a PM?
Tbh not really. I mean, if it works for the next three months, maybe we should just carry on not having a Prime Minister?

Eta:

They cancelled my son's sports day because it's too hot.

We'll get a snap election when Burnedham ascends to be the PM so Labour can exploit the Reform/Restore civil war
It will be interesting to see how the Performative Right and the Further Right actually resolve their situation.

Much like the USA the real political change won't happen until the Boomers finally die off and become a minority or irrelevant voter bloc. The younger generation is much more immune to Line Go Up politics.

When things keep getting worse, the past will always be better than the present.

This is unironically completely accurate. It's the same political mechanism that lets Line Go Up politics work. You can do whatever you please as long as houses prices remain high (because of mass immigration) and the triple locked pension scheme is untouched.

So things keep getting worse until that political calculus changes. When they die off in the next decade or two.

My debt is paid, niggers.
