They could make a separation between private and commercial accounts, with the latter costing a few bucks a month but allowing more options for advertisements similar to what Facebook allows. Considering how many companies use social media, it'd make them quite a bit of money.The issue is that Twitter's very nature makes it almost impossible to make money. Who would buy an ad when a tweet works the same?
Of course, under this pretense using a private account for advertising would be against the rules.
Nowadays, it's much smarter to advertise in 150 characters or less. Attention spans aren't what they used to be.If I had a product to sell, I'd rather talk about it in full sentences than trying to shoehorn it into 150 characters and be forced to use abbreviations that may not be understood by a huge swath of the audience.
