Is there much non-fiction literature about 'magic' and its practitioners for readers who are fascinated in it as an academic subject, rather than actually practicing it? I have read some Ronald Hutton, as an example of what I am talking about, but holy shit he is as dry as a bone.

These are both older books, but "Drawing Down the Moon" by Margot Adler and "Persuasions of the Witch's Craft" by Tanya Luhrmann are readable and academically grounded studies.

On reflection, you might find Luhrmann's book heavy going at times. It's quite detailed. She is however more interested in individual beliefs and practices than Hutton.
