NOAA also notes that the very South also has a very small tornado risk if any storms pop up at the tail end of the blizzard too, which could further fuck up things if they spin up.

Tornado update: some places in the 2% area got bumped up to 5% for Sunday at the time of this post. No hatched area.
 
Fucking bullshit.

My pipes just froze.

Like, my current house is the first time in my life I've ever been exposed to having to worry about my pipes freezing. I guess just in past houses the pipes were better insulated to whatever depth or whatever.

But in the last year or two I had them freeze for the first time and I learned that "leaving the taps dribbling" is actually important sometimes.

So for the past week or so, I've been pretty good about turning them on at night so they don't freeze.

This morning I went out for a walk with a friend of mine and we got brunch and on our walk home, it was significantly colder than it was in the morning. Over the course of like two hours, at 2pm it was suddenly very cold. I thought I was imagining it but he brought it up. Maybe just wind chill but still, bizarre for it to suddenly get perceptibly, significantly colder in the middle of the fucking day.

I get home, and I'm just hanging out at home for an hour or so and just now I noticed the taps aren't working.

I brought in a few jugs of water from the shed (rock hard now but they'll thaw). And I have a space heater running in my bathroom, maybe I can thaw the pipes.

That sucks man. I used to rent a horrible house on a plain a few miles away from the next tree or structure. The wind chill definitely caused my pipes to freeze. Ended up cutting open the wall and installing a cabinet door so that I could point a space heater at the pipes running near the outside wall. Also, see if you can shut off the water for part of the house. My current place has valves before the outside taps, and valves between the upstairs and downstairs. It's really nice to be able to shut off everything if the place is going to be unoccupied for a while

It might be a good time to find out where your water main cutoff is and find a tool that you can turn the valve with.

Yeah... this is really definitely some "home ownership 101" shit I need to be learning.

It's an old Baltimore rowhouse. I can guess where the water cutoff might be. One bathroom, and everything is more or less in a line straight back from the street. Water heater -> kitchen sink -> bathroom -> back patio faucet.

Gutted to read this. I hope the situation improves for you, and not get any worse.

How are the rest of you doing? I’m fine on my end. The north side of my property is completely frozen, but the south is fine. Pipes are fine. No one has drunken slammed into my fences (yet) or a nearby transformer

In the adult world, you might get lucky if your employer lets you miss one day for snow and that's if you are lucky and even then you don't get paid. Some will straight up fire you if you no show for bad snow storms.

Luckily, I was able to stockpile on PTO. I was able to use it for tomorrow in preparation of the snow. I'm not understanding why people are stocking up on perishables like milk, bread and meat if there's a chance the power could go out.

I have some snacks and plenty of juice. I should have enough salt for a month. I plan on going out and shoveling every couple hours to prevent it from piling up. I think I should've bought more food because clean up will be hectic for the next couple days. Oh, and two flashlights on the wall and a case of water.
