Ugh, it feels like she's staring at me. I'll have to find the time to read Junji Ito's stuff in general, especially, or in particular, Hellstar Remina, which I forgot was one of his works.

Remina is great, I'd say it's even one of my personal favorites of Junji Ito's but it gets legitimately ridiculous near the end even by his standards.

Geek Love. It's about a family who purposely give their kids birth defects because they're running a freak show. There's a flipper baby who starts a cult.

... of amputees. Flipper baby's own sister is in love with him, so she gets the telekinetic ten year old brother to implant flipper baby's baby inside of her. Flipper baby's baby has a tail, and flipper baby declares that flipper baby's baby must be sent away for not being freakish enough, which is a good thing because telekinetic ten year old brother loses his shit when one of his conjoined twin sisters murders their baby, and blows the entire freak show and himself to a bloody mist.
It's really well written and entertaining, and the main character has an extraordinarily eloquent inner voice.
Tax:
I've just finished the first omnibus of PTSD Radio, and imho the manga-ka is a better story teller than Junjo Ito. I love Ito but his psychological impact comes primarily through his illustrations. PTSD Radio also has creepy visuals, but it's more effective than Ito at creating a creepy atmosphere through storyline and characterisation, as opposed to the monster-of-the-week trope that Ito tends to fall into.

Eye of the Chickenhawk by Simon Dovey extensively details a large web of child pornographers in 1970's America, connecting the case to both John Wayne Gacy and Dean Corll. It's more or less written as one giant research paper about the topic and is unbelievably dense and bleak. I found the book because of this video.

It's an interesting read so far but it's one those books that makes you sad and angry every single page. I recommend checking out the video I linked first because that covers a lot of the major perpetrators while the book really gets into the weeds of connecting the dozens upon dozens of men who were involved.

I've already seen the video in question, I think that it was posted on the community happenings thread. Is there much profiling or psychology, or is it mostly focused on the tracking aspect?

I've been enjoying Là-bas, The Damned by J.K Huysmans and I was delighted to stare upon the page which held the quote: "Ah, for those old bundles of firewood you use in the countryside, those faggots of vine clippings which used to smell so wonderful and cast a golden glow over the room" (49). I believe this is the most genuine use of the word faggot I've ever witnessed which tickled me enough to post about it.

I've been really liking it so far. The prose is intelligent but not overly complicated and the setting, fin-de-siècle, has properly infatuated me. I've only read 5/21 chapters which means I've just gotten to some of the more titillating black mass explanations in hushed conversation. A lot of the book so far is thoughtful multiple paragraph rants by the second main character, des Hermies to the wistful protagonist Durtal. I don't think it is likely that I read the rest of Durtal's story in En Route, La Cathédrale and L'oblat as those are mostly dealing with Huysmans intense focus on highly specific aspects Catholicism. You get some of that in The Damned as well with descriptions of the bell ringer and Durtal's not so subtle yearning to live as a medieval catholic monk. The footnotes are also helpful with my favorite noting that Huysmans likes to look more well-read than he is.

I have but didn't find it too interesting. It really felt like Kubrick wanted to adapt La-Bas instead but could not for obvious reasons so he had to be a little more subtle...

This is a genuinely great novel and most definitely fucked up. If you haven't read À rebours already I'd recommend that as well.
I'd also recommend his much-neglected later work, in which he moves from degeneracy and hedonism to redemption. Although latent in his earlier work is criticism of the Decadent philosophy his protagonists adopt (none of them end up well), he becomes much more archly critical of the consequences of this philosophy and moves toward Catholicism.
It's somewhat sad how little he is known or read these days considering the extraordinarily broad influence he's had on modern culture even to this day.
Well, remember, he was a civil servant, not a scholar. I do think you're missing something if you don't read the later works, though. They're seriously short on the "fucked-up" component, though.
