“You need to have protection of our borders and you need people to do that,” the Vermont senator said at the Minnesota State Fair.

ST. PAUL, Minn. ― Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT.), while campaigning at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday, suggested he would not abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate said he would get rid of ICE raids but declined to say that he would scrap the agency altogether during a live-taping of an interview with MPR News, which hundreds of fairgoers had gathered to watch.

Asked if he agreed with a woman in the crowd who shouted “abolish ICE” during the audience Q&A portion of the interview, Sanders told MPR News host Tom Crann that he would abolish “the current disastrous immigration system.”

“ICE is one small part of that system,” Sanders said. “We have to develop a system. But I will say this: We will abolish the ICE raids, which are terrorizing communities all over this country.”

Crann continued to press the Vermont senator, asking if he sees “a valid purpose for an agency in the federal government like ICE.”

“The first question you asked, do I believe in open borders? No, I do not,” Sanders responded. “So you need to have protection of our borders and you need people to do that.”

The question of whether to abolish ICE has become somewhat of a litmus test among 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. Sanders’ comments Saturday mark his strongest statement against shutting down the agency to date.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Miramar, Florida, Mayor Wayne Messam are the only two 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls who have called for ICE to be abolished.
Sanders has previously called for the restructuring of the immigration enforcement agency and voted against establishing ICE and the Department of Homeland Security when they were proposed over 15 years ago.

“ICE has become a deportation and detention machine,” Sanders said in July 2018. “And I would fundamentally restructure the agency, as well as all the agencies that currently enforce our immigration laws, to create a humane and rational immigration system with independent oversight.”

>NOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST SAY WE NEED ICE AFTER I RETWEETED JENNIFER LAWRENCE'S TWEETS ABOUT ICE BEING FASCISTS RUN BY DRUMPFT!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

There's no way he would agree to abolishing ICE and especially not to open borders. No leader would ever agree to open borders since they would quickly not have a country to rule over. And by saying you would trash ICE you would lose way more voters than you would just wanting the soy vote.
Seems Bernie is trying to go for the less extreme leftist vote after destroying any integrity he had last election. Too bad for him it's not going to matter now, he had a chance to win in 2016 and he threw it in his supporters faces. I'm more impressed he has the balls to actually try running again.

You can even go as far as to say that he's repeating himself, since he's said the same thing last year.

>BERNIE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, we now know who's dropping out next. Guess Bernie's not as "progressive" as we thought! How's are you feeling the burn, Bernie!

He's a socialist who understands the concept that you can have shit like U.B.I. and all the other crap he wants, or open borders, but not both. I actually respect him a little for that.

He's a politician. A populist one at that. He's just saying what he thinks people want to hear.

Consider his running mates for a moment. He's still going against the grain when it comes to what his party is trying to get through at the moment.

You're not wrong at all, but being real Bernie has talked about the topic before and his thoughts on it to seem to be consistent. Like I said I'll give him that over his fellow sardines in the clown-car.

I'm happy Bernie Sanders is falling back from the far-left rhetoric of immigration. No country can operate with just letting people in and out as they please. I think if Bernie didn't run with Hillary, he may have had a chance of winning the presidency. If Hillary didn't enter, he would've been the Democratic primary.

I'm happy somebody is speaking about college debt.

And while he's hammering his fist on a podium and yelling until he turns himself pink, I'm happy that someone is actually doing something about it, and not just saying that they're going to do it. Frankly if I wanted to look up to someone doing something about college debt, my first choice wouldn't be the guy whose wife ran a liberal arts college so poorly that it went crashing into the floor and shut down when they couldn't pay for the property that she'd bought for the college during her tenure as president.

People have been speaking about college debt for decades. And stupid fuckers still keep taking out these loans... STILL! The programming is hard to break.

There are three choices:
1) Status quo. If you take out a dumb loan. It's on you.
2) Free college! Debt forgiveness and whatever. Make everyone else pay for young people to fuck around for 4-ish years.
3) Free market. Stop securing the loans. Banks won't loan for garbage degrees, new cars, and spring break in Cabo then.

Considering you can't swing a dead cat and not hit some unemployed/underemployed college grad I'm thinking Bernie's plan is shit.

Good start, veterans that are disabled shouldn't have to worry about more debt.

As the same article pointed out, that's a small fraction of $1.6 trillion in student debt. I'm not saying to give free college to undocumented immigrants, but there are even teachers that are struggling with college debt that they may not even qualify for that exemption.

As you mentioned the "liberal arts degrees", why not allow amnesty for those with debt that have a degree with a high demand field. Nursing, technology, teaching? What Trump is doing sounds good on paper, but there is still a substantial amount of debt being ignored regardless of the circumstances.

I'd be all for someone offering to prioritize productive, high-demand degrees over degrees that are functionally fucking useless, I just don't believe a single word that comes out of Bernie's mouth anymore. He's lied too many times for me to care about a damned thing he says, and on top of that we can't just cancel all of the debt outright. We could lower or freeze interest rates to help ease people out of it, but you can't just slam the brakes on $1.6 trillion dollars in debt and expect no economic repercussions.
