Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 2024 - Daylight come and he wan' go home

Seeing Lydia and Bettlejuice interact is giving me some of the old cartoon vibes. Never liked it, but watched it occasionally. I don't completely hate this but I don't want to be optimistic either. Jee, i might even take the family to watch it... The kids are teens and one's an adult so it's fine if it's scary and crude.

Can't wait for the God-awful zoomer fandom. Heaven help us all.
Ugh... Don't ever look the YT comments of Happy Nation or Like a Prayer... I hate zoomers. Kill zoomers, kick zoomers, etc.

I'd honestly be okay if B2 was just a riff on the cartoon with Keaton and Ortega. Lydia knew BJ for like five minutes and aside from messing with her, I really don't think there should be much interaction between the two of them.

Bumping the thread because of the movie coming out and we need to discuss this film. It's shit. Obvious reshoots happened to force in William Dafoe, Beetlejuice s wife either had her storyline cut to pieces or reworked because she's similarly a non-player in the bigger events. Justin thorax plot line could be seen from a mile away

Maybe it's because I'm older and used to the tricks but this really seemed like a massive 4 hr film that got cut down to however long it was just because of the pace and amount of plot lines truncated

The 3rd act is an absurd deus ex machina list.

The only surprising thing is how much they included the pedos character and how awful the songs were.

Beetlejuice was so unique and iconic because it portrayed the afterlife in such a bizarre way. And the calpsyo music was a great representation of that. The same way voodoo and island legends are way outside of western religious comprehension. The afterlife is a weird place, with the characters having the same "strangers in a strangeland" as someone might if they were an immigrant. From the buccracy to the scammers to the wild animals to the weird daughter of a couple of rich lefties being the only one that seems to give a fuck about your plight, Beetlejuice was the closest mainstream audiences had to experiencing the bizarre world of immigration and how kafka esque getting any help in the modern day really was.

It's a big reason why any portrayal of the afterlife that isnt God focused is instead portrayed like an island adventure during carnival, from monkeybone to grim Fandango. The afterlife looked like a sandy place full of strange looking people and bizarre trees and relationships.

It's why the concept of Beetlejuice in Hawaii as a sequel was a metaironic take, it being plausible but unlikely to have a beach movie that parodies German expressionisn, it sounds silly here, but the original Beetlejuice was a calpsyo themed movie playing around with a kafka esque afterlife.

The music just being classics from the 70s just doesn't make it feel as bizarre and otherworldly as it was in the original. They didn't even try to get close to Day-o. Another big complaint I have is both including more of BJs backstory but also not explaining WTF he's been doing since the end of the movie. Same thing with the father just working.

Just based on the fact that you can watch an hour of Beetlejuice related commercials means this film is guaranteed to be a hit but it's just sort of bad, obviously I haven't watched the original in years but it being so location limited with such a small plot meant it really tried to do the most with very little. If they just cut everything else and focused on it being a madcap dash through the underworld to save the daughter then it would be a funner time.

It feels very "direct to video" sequel in a way to me, like it really seems to mess with what few rules were established and everything is very quickly resolved in a way you only used to see on television "we only got 3 minutes left so let's just have someone find a loophole"

It's the sort of film that makes me wonder if the rest of Timmys films are similarly badly edited. Like I said the 3rd act is one of the worst I've personally seen in a dozen years, and the lines said are so blatantly off point it's clear the person is responding to something else said.

I also saw Twisters recently and it was paint by numbers, but they really changed up enough stuff to make it really good in the current climate. You can see where a 2009 version of the same film might have happened but they'd switch up the character dynamics to keep it fresh for modern audiences. The female love interests b plot instead takes the center stage. The corporate sponsored team isn't just generic villains (like the first one) but we spend the earlier part with them and see a "why" for why someone might be a part of that team. Glen Powells personality would have been the "Christopher MacDonald in billy Madison" tier villain if this was made years earlier but instead he's the one with the heart of gold.

Meanwhile this Tim Burton film just feels lifeless, when I think about everything from the stop motion to the nutty effects of the first one, this feels so much lower budget. Beetlejuice comes off way more lovable than the demon he was in the first film and similarly does way less. Any good effect you see in the trailer is in-between dozens of minutes of boring. It's crazy to think about how many moving parts there are to the first one, meanwhile this one is so based on dialogue and "normal" character interaction it almost felt like a YouTube video or a commercial. "We didn't have the budget for a kooky car chase, but here's 15 seconds of dancing in our music number, just enough for tiktok virality"

I know everyone says "the trailer has the best parts of the movie" but here it's especially true to the point where it feels more like the trailer was shot first then they had to come up with connective tissue.

Also they never address the shrunken heads all running around and it's obvious they cut out the part of the priest being an alcoholic.

It's times like these I wish director cuts were more common, I'd love to see what ended up on the cutting room floor or just the discussions about what the film. Originally looked like or what major plots they cut. Like Men in black had 3 different major alien factions and a cross country adventure but through editing and messing with subtitles they simplified it and made it a classic.

The Latina did good with what she had, but it's such a bare bones plot line. There's way too many characters and this is the type of film that begged for a "in media res" to cut to the "Lydia and Beetlejuice save the daughter" style plot.

Still rather pissed about the stuff with Monica, it easily takes up a good chunk of the movie but is rendered useless hilariously quickly, one out of the 2 songs in the movie plays during her introduction..

I'm not going to officially say Lydia's parents are differently characterized from the original because I forget and them being rich city folk makes it all plausible. But it's obvious they're making the most out of Catherine ohera and her similar character on schitts creek.

I will say Lydia hosting a TV show that's part daytime TV and part ghost hunters is a neat idea but really does scream "screenwriters stuck in 2004/script from 2004 used with almost no updates to the plot"

While lydia would be a bit outside the age range, her being a true crime podcaster is exactly what the "modern" equivalent of what she did would be.

I'd give extra points if she was a streamer but her being a longtime ghost hunter is absurd. Plus the timeline doesn't make sense for her and Justin's relationship. They've at least been friendly with each other long enough to force her into doing a TV show. But the daughter treats him like he's a new addition to the family unit

Meanwhile this Tim Burton film just feels lifeless
Your comment is long but well worth reading. I will not be seeing the film. The trailer had its moments, but I have been burnt out too much with these sequels, and you have confirmed my gut feeling. All these films lack something, perhaps it is sincerity. Dafoe, an actor I like, seemed from the trailers to be shoehorned in.

I don't know if I pity Burton. I do think if he had more freedom he could make an interesting film. There is hints here and there of his awareness of how bad he has become, but he continues making trash. I don't think he could swallow his pride and make a lower budget film.

What I enjoy most about Beetlejuice is the love for rural America. I was raised in the English countryside and Burton's film make me nostalgic, because that is what it is like growing up in a village. It captures what children with active imaginations do to pass the time away in their small towns and home. They, when left to there own devices, create stories and adventures inside there little- inner and outer- worlds. And they always inevitably flirt with the darker side of life. Blue Velvet and Nightmare on Elm Street are like Beetlejuice in this respect. Despite some of these films being marketed to adults, they tap into the child within. And for many of us, we saw these films at an age that supposedly we shouldn't do, though I imagine, we turned out alright in spite it (barring the fact we are on Kiwifarms). They are the Wuthering Heights of their time.

"we need to discuss this film. It's shit."

Thank you for saying this. I appreciate it so much more than you can know. KF is the only place where people aren't engaging in toxic positivity.

Aside from his handful of early classics, I have always actively disliked Burton’s schtick. The “Johnny Depp and HBC, all the time” era was especially irksome. I think he's pretentious AF and full of shit.

Newbie and longtime lurker here; if anything about my post is incorrect I will be happy to edit or delete. This will probably be my only post here because I don’t have much to contribute to the Farms, but I’ve been desperate to find somewhere I can express a negative opinion of this movie without being downvoted/dogpiled/hated/dismissed or laughed-at. I certainly can't do that on Reddit or FB.

I will try to make this post relevant in a larger sense and not just a personal rant, but please bear with me.

I am a lifelong hardcore fan of the original 1988 movie, basically a superfan. I hate the fact that this “sequel” exists. I cannot overstate how much I hate it. I am devastated, gutted.

I have not watched it and I refuse to ever watch it. It is an inherently terrible idea and the fact that it got made at all is a total dealbreaker to me, a tragedy. This feels like the end of an era and the loss of something special.

If that sounds excessively emotional, please read on, because there’s a message here. Rate me lunatic if you need to, but like I said, I’m just passing through.

My overwhelming dislike of this sequel has led me to reevaluate how I interact with media. It has shown me that I need to be careful and self-aware about how I engage with pop culture.

It seems like everyone claims to love the original 1988 movie and this character, even if they barely remember it or only know of it through general pop culture osmosis.

But I played with those ugly Kenner action figures when I was kid. I dressed up as Beetlejuice for Halloween several times when I was a kid, and I have also done so as an adult. (These days I don’t do the hair/makeup/teeth/nails, I just have a high quality version of the striped suit with some accessories. TBH it looks fantastic and I receive(d) many compliments.) Am I gatekeeping? I sure am.

I know, I know, "True and Honest fan!!11!" mentality. I'm trying to move past that. But I'm dumbfounded at the number of people who claim to have grown up with the original and are okay with this sequel and enthusiastically praising it. Why are our standards so low? Why is "just okay" good enough? Why is "just okay" a strong enough reason to make a "sequel" to an almost 40-year-old movie?

Keaton's performance as Betelgeuse in the 1988 original is endlessly fascinating to me. There's something transcendant about it. For whatever reason, it grabbed hold of my imagination and wouldn't let go. He became a talismanic figure to me, a sort of personl mascot that I held very dear and very close.

That moment where Davis and Baldwin first meet him and he surges up out of his grave, flying? Pure magic.

But now it seems like they've taken this amazingly powerful and impressive character and turned him into just another schlubby low-energy guy like Krusty the Klown or something.

The fact that they've given Betelgeuse a backstory/origin story is what I was dreading most of all, and these idiots went ahead and did it. I genuinely believe this is one of the worst decisions in pop culture history. Like the song goes, you don't tug on Superman's cape and you don't pull the mask off the Lone Ranger. Of all the characters who don't need and shouldn't have a backstory, Betelgeuse/Beetlejuice is near the top. For me, this destroys the whole appeal and mystique of the character, undermines it almost completely.

The entire point of this character is that we know almost nothing about him; we dont't know who or barely even WHAT he is. He's mysterious and unknown and that is his appeal. Is he a ghost, is he a demon, is he human? Where did he come from, how did he die, when did he die, what does he do and where does he go when he's not in his coffin? To what extent is he sinister or friendly, harmful or well-meaning? What are his real motivations or intentions? What will he do if/when he escapes from the Model Town? Is anything that he says about himself actually true, or is he just rambling and lying?

It's fun to theorize and imagine and wonder and speculate, to make fanfiction or fan-art, to have ideas and headcanons. That's the essence of fantasy and fiction. We don't need everything spelled-out for us. This takes a magical, inscrutable, complex, multi-layered character and makes him ordinary and drags him down to earth. Where is the fun in that? It assumes that the audience has no imagination and needs hand-holding and spoon-feeding, no ambiguity allowed.

I've been noticing a trend of Hollywood wanting to "explain" characters whose appeal lies in being mysterious--Beetlejuice, the Grinch, Willy Wonka. Like we need everything to be very literal and obvious with no unanswered questions.

IMO everyone involved in this flick has tarnished their reputation, Keaton especially. What was he thinking??? He seems like a smart and grounded person. But again, that's parasocial to think we can know a celebrity's thoughts, when we don't actually know them as a person.

What is with these actors in their 70s and 80s thinking they can seamlessly resurrect their most iconic characters from thirty, forty, or even fifty years ago? Why the fuck can't Michael Keaton and Harrison Ford go play golf together or something and let us have our childhood heroes preserved in memory, undiminished? Why the fuck do we have a digitally de-aged Robert Dinero??

This isn't just any role, it's a wildly physical, hyperactive, kinetic, chaotic, frenetic, aerobic type of character. A character whose look, voice, body language, mannerisms, clothes, etc, are highly specific. Keaton looks great for his age and I'm sure he can still play more normal, human types of roles. But his wrinkled face in that white makeup? Disturbing. A 73-year-old can't do it. Betelgeuse is dynamic, not static.

Ghosts don't age. I know that sounds autistic or whatever, but that's the crux of the matter. Surely Betelgeuse is immortal and ageless. Ghosts don't age, actors do. Everyone involved in this thing should've had the grace and humility to recognize that the window of opportunity had passed.

AFAIK Jim Carrey hasn't been attempting the same intensely physical antics he was known for in the '90s. Likewise, Will Farrell refused a sequel to Elf (another absurdist, cartoonish, slapstick character) and for that I can respect him. (Though it appears he's down with the troons now, unfortunately...)

At some point, fandom becomes less like an outlet for creative expression and more like an addiction. If you feel yourself heading down that path, take a step back. That’s what I’m choosing to do now, because this meddling with a beloved childhood movie has provoked such a strong reaction in me and I don’t want to be that way or feel that way.

I don't want to be Annie Wilkes and I sure as hell don't want to be that Wogglebug chick.

TL;DR: Do not become overly attached to fictional things. Do not let yourself hyperfixate on fictional characters. You are inevitably setting yourself up for disappointment. Pump the breaks on your obsession(s) while you still can.

Maybe in 5 or 10 years we'll be able to watch the original 1988 Beetlejuice again and smile, and forget about this "sequel." But for now I am taking a break from this fandom, because I recognize that my level of investment is unhealthy. Hollywood can't leave well enough alone with these endless sequels/remakes/reboots and the only sane solution is to opt out. I'll probably always love this character, but instead of rekindling my interest, this "sequel" has pushed me away from it, and I doubt that's what the makers anticipated.

That's why I made "Recovering Fangirl" my handle. I care too much about such things and I'm trying to cultivate a healthier perspective. But damn it, there shouldn't be a "sequel" to a 40-year-old movie. And this one seems to be full of retcons and stuff that contradicts the first one and overwrites what made the character interesting in the first place.

i was going to say, its a bit odd for him to have a backstory, he just seemed so perfectly modern and sleezy so why would he be some dark ages fella. i guess the best way to talk about him would be if a modern con man had devil powers. the type of guy that somehow makes money signing people up for scams on the street.

I just saw it. I expected it to be really bad but it was merely lame. The only time I laughed was at the very end when Lydia wakes up next to Beetlejuice and he says "I just had the weirdest dream". It's a disjointed underbaked movie with no visual identity and even the visuals copied from the original feel generic. The characters are crap outside of Beetlejuice himself, who's still very low energy here. Lydia's daughter is self absorbed and obnoxious and everyone else is a one note joke or a shallow vehicle for mombad/menbad crap. The whole thing felt like it was written by a focus group of wealthy resentful women who hate and have also turned into their mothers, but also have some vague memories and nostalgia for the original movie. Compared to the original it's not an insulting disaster but at best it's disappointing and unnecessary. It's a solid meh/10 and I'm surprised that so many people liked it. Maybe this is the best Hollywood is capable of right now. I can't even care enough to hate it.

God you people are so negative you're like DNA syrup of a log and the doomerjack in a centerfuge. The only somewhat positive comment I've seen since the release is.
> 2024 A.D.

Based. Dogwhistle that the movie won't be wokeshit? Intentionally using A.D. instead of C.E. even though neither is necessary.
And that's assuming a man wasn't being facetious.

I enjoyed it.

It's not narrative driven. It's just a bunch of stuff that happens, with no real point in the end, but that's kinda how the original movie was. It's how a lot of Burton's old movies were. It gets by on it's visuals, and eccentric characters, and macabre sense of humor, which is all I really needed.

Just saw this movie, it was a big fat meh. It feels that they dwell on scenes longer than they should have. It should have been about an hour long thing. The soul train has to be the most dad joke ever made.

Him being from the dark ages is mentioned in the og movie.
