@chaddis the misconceptions about recast quality stems from when the first recaster (Forever Doll) recasted Volks MSDs. I managed to get my hands on one of their recasted heads many years ago to see what the fuss was about.

The head was casted from who-knows-what and did powder when you scratched the inside with a fingernail. I would've never dreamed of attaching it to a body for fear it would just crack and crumble into pieces.

Todays recasters use real resin, but I don't condone going for fakes. There are so many payment options and layaway these days, it's not like the old days where there was just Volks and you had to use shopping services.

@HickoryDickory Whoa... I'm hoping you didn't actually pay for it, but sometimes that's what it takes to actually see these things in person. How were the full dolls even kept together with such weak resin? Strung loosely?

I actually bought a Luo recast awhile back, out of (immature) belligerence to the community, but despite being decently made I just didn't like having a fake and ended up selling it. The inside was unfinished, the tan resin was scratched and off-color, and Minifees just have really bobbleheaded proportions imo. Plus it feels wrong to not support the industry and all... Even a cheap secondhand MSD is better than a recast.

Oh fuck yeah I knew there would be a doll thread here. Anyone got any hot tips on where to start digging for drama? I'm browsing through tumblr and there's lots of oblique references to things that happened but no primary sources yet and some of it looks pretty good.

There have to be cows in this community, right? Girls are incredibly good at having beef online.

You can do some digging on Den of Angels, and if you want to get historical, check out what happened when a bunch of them decided to split off and form "Den of Demons" because they hated the way Armeleia was running the forums.

What tends to happen, in my experience, is that someone will be a dramatic bitch in person, people will whisper about it, but no one will write up a big post about "Avoid so-and-so because they're crazy" for fear of being ostracized from the community for being mean. Instead, it's mostly vague references in between all the ass patting.

Honestly i'm still waiting for the day when people finally will call out x companies over this wait-list bs. If i order a doll, i kinda expect it to be delivered in a timely manner, not the time + 6 months

I complained to Ringdoll privately and publicly and they not only shifted their asses, they sent a shitton of complimentary accessories after waiting SEVEN MONTHS for two swords. I emailed them, asked wtf was going on and they shipped them along with the accessories within a week. One sword arrived broken and they replaced that immediately too. Ringdoll is a huge fucking mess right now, BJDivas were telling me how insanely disorganised they are and have been for a while when I'd ordered a RD body through them.

I remember when RD were shown to be the fashionable underdog "cool guys" of the hobby after some behind the the scenes video went around, so I'm honestly reveling in the reveal that they're like any other overpriced doll company. I think their fullest clothes are nicer though? From what I hear. They dont use hot glue guns like fairyland. Sad.

Believe what you want about recasts but at least they haul ass for a good review, far as I can tell. Its unfortunate

Did anyone here spring for a Venitu? Not that I did or anything... just the head.

For such a bitchy hobby it sure is hugboxy. The critique section of DoA and is literally nothing but people posting 'this is my first ever face-up, I promise' when it's clearly not true and all the comments are bland pleasantries. I mean, I know it says it's a 'safe place' (lol) but it also says 'critique'.
Isn't that essentially the "quirky artist" default for a piece that obviously took time. If you ve actually worked with any of the mediums needed then you know drying times are important

I read a post by someone on one of the neutral fb pages, pretty much wondering why some people who make their bi yearly to weekly "recasts are the devil, repent sinner" posts, tag them with # recast and # recast bjd. When they (most vocal pro artists folk) claim the recast space is for recast and dont come in my safe space. Those tage are pretty much viewed by one party
It's a hot take but true.

The comments were in agreement that if there is a line, then theres no reason to cross it. One person said that directly going after folks with a bootleg is entitled behavior. And as usual there was one person claiming that this was reverse bullying. She went on for a while till the group dunked on her for being a passive aggressive Jack off in a neutral group.
I think it's still up but the hug box mentality is a strange one.
Both sides have crazies, and I see no problem with bad nothing the ideology

My people! I've been out of the community for a while (burned out) but I recently dipped my toe back into DoA to see what's happening. I've missed all the drama with recasts apparently. None of that was going on when I was a regular.

The face up forum was pretty horrific, tbh. The rest of the place is as clique-y as ever.

The fb pages are a better way to dive in imo. The bad transactions form is decent as well

I can confirm their fullsets are very nice. I have one, it took 3 months to arrive. Ringdoll used to take 4 months for a full doll but now they're taking 5 months just for a pair of hands (or 7 for two swords, ahem).

im p new to this so i apologize in advance but where can i find nice looking dolls that are durable and inexpensive? (also is resin or vinyl better?)
Vinyl is nice if you want a moddable doll that can have parts shrunk via acitone and is lightweight. But the plastic skeleton can break and will need repair by buying new parts. Dollfie are popular. There are also obitsu, Azone 50/angel philia use the obitsu skeleton so they can change parts. Obitsu can also wear dollfie dream heads/hands and body parts but they need to be cut or shrunken. Cons: stains. You MUST be aware that your doll can stain. Prevent this with a body sleeve/wash the clothes, avoid dark colors. Use dark colors only for quick photos and remove. Soft vinyl stains faster. See the dollfie dream forum for tips and advice. All vinyl with the obitsu skeleton matches if its NS. Dd matches ns to OB ns. Bodies for all are usually $200 new but dollfie are more, see second hand sales.
An obitsu trick is to zip tie the shoulder slots and secure with super glue and stock up on parabox ankle parts.
Abs is cheaper, see hujoo/blythe/ obitsu 11,22,24 ect/azone pure neeno

Resin is heavy. Be careful of falls and breaks . Its expensive, dont break it. Parts aren't cheap IF the company will sell them. Every company has different resin colors so good luck matching. More realistic faces if you dont like the anime look, can be cheaper depending on the company. Moddable via sanding ect. Durable to a point. Need elastic and S hooks, cleaning, maintenance ect. May stain but it's easy to remove. $$$$ There is no "cheap" bjd. If you want decent posing, pay the extra. Second hand market is a gamble but I've gotten expensive heads for a fraction of the cost.
Avoid the pro artists/recast debates, both are restarted. Remember they are $300-3k plastic toys made by asians and aren't real.

Recasts are sold on Aliexpress for a fraction of the cost, made of the same resin and ship out in a month vs, 8 months to a year. S/l or China bjd is popular, avoid luodoll. Would a recast be a good starter? Maybe. Still not cheap like plastic abs or vinyl dolls but decent for a complete newbie to completely destroy. I see a good deal of people who start with recast, move to legit later In life. It's a time hobby

Watch the FB groups for sales and damaged dolls. Invest in good faceup materials or commission an artist. Dont use sharpie like an autist. Seal your doll with MSC or some cheap hobby spray, never draw on a blank doll

Dont make dolls your life. It's a literal money pit. The nicest ones are wearing their friends clothes/models or the owner is an artist of some sort. Most nice sets cost $200+. Ebay simple sets are $10-20. You usually pay for a nude doll, remember that

Sorry to just thrust a dead thread back to life but as much as the BJD community weirds me out as they get into stupid disputes and I don't really have an attachment towards them at all i'd for sure get this

or this

It's very expensive though, but very well made.
I can respect the craftsmanship behind BJDs.
Look on thingiverse, type in, horse bjd, go there n click on the maker. She has a whole bunch of 3d prinable dolls you can make yourself or pay someone to print it. I have a horse rn amd want the fox

There was a thread on Facebook (that was deleted relatively quickly) where someone asked if it was okay to ask for "donations" to buy a doll. Then they started whining that it wasn't begging, it was "paying it forward" when 98% of the comments were "Fuck no you leech, it's a goddamn luxury." The 2% were comparing it to Amazon wishlists, like that isn't begging in it's own way. I only use those as a private way of tracking things I'd someday like to get, not as a "buy me this shit random internet strangers!" like we see a lot on the Farms.

Pretty much the whole community joined toether for about five minutes to rag on them.
