Autistic Culture Movement / Neurodiversity

What if it was my autism spectrum disorder that drove me to pursue my aspirations? With that drive gone, that certain magic would disappear as well. Things would be different.

No Job
No friends
Can't drive
Parents control your finances.

Yep seems like your autism has really bestowed upon you a life of wealth and prosperity!

We wouldn't know the long-term physical and psychological affects of a cure. For all I know, I could turn into a fucking zombie.
Let me put it in terms you will understand: It's like being a mutant in X-Men. Some mutants are able to live with their powers and control them, while others have strongly negative effects on their quality of life. Do you blame Rogue for wanting to be able to live a normal life and touch people without accidentally killing them?

Now that someone has explained it to you using a movie, does it make more sense?

More than likely you'd actually show slow and steady improvements to things like body language, social skills, and other shit autism messes with and suffer a few very minor side effects. Life isn't Flowers For Algernon, Connor

Connor, I think I get what you're saying but ultimately what I don't understand is this.

Yes, it's one thing to acknowledge and accept the fact that you have autism, or really any negative trait. But autism isn't really a good thing.

Now I do believe that because of the neurological nature of autism that it has a major effect on how you view the world, how you develop as a person and how you evolve, so I do think that a full cure that erases autism may be unethical. However, treatments can help alleviate the issues with autism while allowing some of the benefits (such as being able to hyperfocus on a task) can be brought to the forefront. Receiving the proper therapy allows autistic people to be able to manage all sorts of aspects of their lives - and quite honestly, if they need treatment, they have a disorder.

I mean we can go on all day about how much it sucks to be me or anyone else on this forum; this forum isn't a hivemind of people who have literally no flaws and are just making fun of others, but we have these opinions for a reason. A lot of forum members here are autistic and it fucks up their lives in one way or another. We all have problems in our heads that give us some living hell or another, and it would be silly to claim they were anything but disorders.

My opinion of the neurodiversity movement is this - it's got good intentions but it's really fucked over by it's implementation. A lot of people seem to believe that neurodiversity doesn't include neurotypical people, and it's just another fancy word for "autism" so that autistic people don't feel sorry for themselves. And there's no reason why "diversity" can't imply "having trouble in certain situations". Autism is most certainly a disorder in most cases, however it's a disorder that also in most cases is manageable and workable. We should call out organizations like Autism Speaks, who does a major disservice to the social perception of autism, but you don't need to claim that autism is just a social construct or whatever in order to do that - just exposing their horrible videos is enough to do that.

Yeah, but a cure won't guarantee any long term happiness. Ever read Flowers for Algernon?

Connor.

Listen.

By your own admission you struggle with the most basic of tasks: seeking gainful employment, maintaining even the smallest and easiest course load at school, etc. This is most certainly because of your "neurodiversity", not in spite of it.
