Turkish military is caliming they;'ve taken control while the official government denies the announcements.

Yildirim says "it would be wrong to call it a coup" but that there has been an attempt by "part of the military".

He describes it as an "illegal attempt" to seize power.

Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy", he said, and promised the perpetrators "will pay the highest price".

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported.

A witness in the country’s capital told Reuters that gunshots were heard as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead. Witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city, also spotted helicopters overhead, the agency reported.

Latest updates also claim that internet and communications have been shut down, but it's unclear as to weather the military or government was responsible.

Also, hilariously enough, not even 4 months ago the Turkish Military threatened legal sanctions against those spreading "false rumors" they were planning a coup.

• Turkey has banned all academics from traveling abroad. All teachers’ annual leave has been cancelled, and those abroad have been given hours to return to Turkey where they must report for work at 8:30 am on Thursday.
• The orders follow the cancellation of the licenses of 21,000 school teachers, and the forced resignation of 1,577 university deans.
• More than 58,000 people in public sector roles are now estimated to have been arrested or thrown out of their jobs. Over 9,000 are in state custody.
  
• The Turkish government confirmed that 6,500 employees at Turkey's education ministry had been suspended.

Here they're literally contrasting his Islamic party against the secular army.

Sadly, Erdoğan appears to be drawing the wrong lessons, seeing the uprising as a “gift from God” to “cleanse our army”. In the past few days, the president has gone further by launching what appears to be a counter-coup to “cleanse all state institutions” of those deemed disloyal to him.

Erdoğan is driven by fear, vengeance and the desire to concentrate power in his own hands. His actions and populist rhetoric are likely to cause even more polarisation and division in Turkey.

The article is arguing that the coup has handed the reigns to Edrogan to do what he wanted, and that if they had overthrown him, Turkey would have been plunged into civil war, so no matter who won, everyone else lost.

The state of emergency gives President Erdogan radically enhanced powers for three months.

He and the cabinet will be able to enact laws bypassing parliament; the constitutional court will be unable to challenge them; there could be restrictions on publications and freedom of assembly; and broader powers of arrest.

Yeah, this will totally last for only three months. Either Erdogan will extend the state of emergency or he'll do away with the pretense altogether.

Apparently reinstating the death sentence was established to be the red line where negotiations about Turkey joining the EU would end, however that was before most of the shit went down like Turkey suspending some of the human rights.
If the EU doesn't stick to its guns on this bullshit, there's nothing really left to say.

It really depends on what they are negotiating. For instance, the "Turkey joining EU" thing was mostly a means to have some input on turkish politics and to keep them away from drifting too far towards Russia.
Similarly, they might be doing something like that now, too. Though, knowing EU, they might try to negotiate the average standardized size of pickels or some shit.
