Aquaman is Black Panther for white people

Change my mind.

White people generally don't care about being white though. Unless you're some fruitball white nationalist you generally don't define your personality and sense of self by the color of your skin in the way "black people" do. It's more like Black Panther minus all the political preening.

I can't believe an Aquaman came out before a Flash movie.

I agree as far as the characters go, but Jason Momoa also seems to be a lot more profitable than the incredibly punchable soy boy playing the Flash. Sometimes great actors can truly elevate a fictional character, like Robert Downey Jr. with Iron Man, but in the case of poor Flash it's the complete opposite if you ask me.

As for the movie itself, I'm gonna say I'm somewhat optimistically cautious despite how bad most DCEU movies are. Sure, the CGI is barely above that of Black Panther, but at least we have some nice, vibrant colors that somewhat help with telling what the hell is going on. I expect the movie to be somewhere around the level of the first two Thor movies, maybe slightly worse.

Última edición:
Between this and the Shazam trailer it looks like they are doubling down on the Whedonified Justice League formula.

Incidentally one of the problems, in my opinion, from what I have seen with both the Shazam and Aquaman movies is that they are essentially the same thing, and a repeat of the most oft-told superhero story: the hero's journey.

The problem is that superheroes all fit in one or two different categories, and so the hero's journey stories are hugely redundant. Worse, modern screenwriters make them even more formulaic than they have to be. Thus according to the trailers, Aquaman gets bullied as a child, and Shazam gets bullied as a child too! It was even done very unconvincingly in Man of Steel - literally the most powerful person on the planet got pushed into lockers just like you and me! It's obviously a very scarring experience. As well, the bullying shown is always hilariously dated and unrealistic--basically straight out of the 1950s, some kid with a name like Biff or Skip tries to push Young Mr. Supertights into a locker.

Now, because the studios are all convinced that only one formula works--Marvel's--they are all writing the same basic movie for each and every superhero now. Changing out the superhero and special effects isn't enough to hide the fact that there's nothing new or interesting here. Just like in for example Man of Steel, Aquaman is exhorted to bridge two different worlds, and his main adversary is not too keen about letting humanity exist, as also seen in Wonder Woman and elsewhere as well. They're barely even bothering to come up with new scripts.
That's not a problem with superhero films. I mean, Doctor Strange is Iron Man with different costumes, nothing more.

Although, yes, you're right: this kind of movies became boring and repetitive years ago and -with one or two mild exceptions- the studios are just too scared to break the safe formula they've found and make something innovative.

It makes me hope that the upcoming New Mutants and Spawn movies will be good, as they both attempt to infuse cape movies with thriller\horror elements, something we haven't seen since the Blade movies. Sure, there's no middle ground with Fox's Marvel stuff, as in they're either really good or absolutely shit, and the Spawn movie's been in development hell for quite some time now, but still.

Not a lot of activity on this thread with the movie approaching its release. I guess that could be because it does not look like a complete disaster or there has not been much "woke media" articles to comment on. Given the main competition next week is Bumblebee, being #1 at the box office won't be an easy feat. I plan on seeing Aquaman on its opening weekend and may give my thoughts.

The poster they released during NYCC is a lot better than the one everyone’s shitting despite being no original than Marvel’s, I have no idea why they’re not using that one.

INB4: “It’s le Thor and Black Panther top off, le Avengers 4 will be better” comments by MCU fanboys and the annoying “le Snyder cut!” guys.

Saw it, got to say I really liked it reminded me of the 90's Mummy movie in terms of tone, so the rotten tomatoes and imdb rating being similar doesn't surprise me at all.

I was at a screening for Fantastic Beasts 2, and during the other trailers and stuff the audience was pretty responsive, laughing at the jokes etc .... then this came on and it was like a funeral. While capeshit is getting boring, the MCU is always watchable, but the DCEU will always be dirge.
