Between this and the Shazam trailer it looks like they are doubling down on the Whedonified Justice League formula.

Incidentally one of the problems, in my opinion, from what I have seen with both the Shazam and Aquaman movies is that they are essentially the same thing, and a repeat of the most oft-told superhero story: the hero's journey.

The problem is that superheroes all fit in one or two different categories, and so the hero's journey stories are hugely redundant. Worse, modern screenwriters make them even more formulaic than they have to be. Thus according to the trailers, Aquaman gets bullied as a child, and Shazam gets bullied as a child too! It was even done very unconvincingly in Man of Steel - literally the most powerful person on the planet got pushed into lockers just like you and me! It's obviously a very scarring experience. As well, the bullying shown is always hilariously dated and unrealistic--basically straight out of the 1950s, some kid with a name like Biff or Skip tries to push Young Mr. Supertights into a locker.

Now, because the studios are all convinced that only one formula works--Marvel's--they are all writing the same basic movie for each and every superhero now. Changing out the superhero and special effects isn't enough to hide the fact that there's nothing new or interesting here. Just like in for example Man of Steel, Aquaman is exhorted to bridge two different worlds, and his main adversary is not too keen about letting humanity exist, as also seen in Wonder Woman and elsewhere as well. They're barely even bothering to come up with new scripts.

And it's directed by James Wan, known for films such as Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. I want it to be one of those so bad it's funny films, but judging from this trailer it's one of those "put as much shit on the screen as you can so the audience won't know it's bad" bad.

It looks like Black Panther, except underwater and with white people... and exponentially less real world sociopolitical pseudo-emotional investment... unless maybe Manta head dude is white instead of black... that might stir up some 1st world problems for a bit.

Can't make a movie without someone bitching about social issues. Seriously, when did our entertainment become our source for political discord? How did our lives get so easy and so privileged that fiction became the preferred fighting foundation for our problems. People used to hate each other over how much slavery, death and destruction the other side had brought about and directly afflicted one another with, now people hate each other over how much "representation" they've got, as if random physical traits are some kind of currency you can barter for importance and self-worth.

Our society has already descended into complete and total madness... we just aren't honest enough with ourselves to really acknowledge the fact that we've already sailed on past the point of no return.

Those guys are edgelords. It's funny because two of the movies they show as "endless trash" ended up being massive critical and commercial hits.

Anywho, this is looking good. I think DC and WB, at least on the film side of things, are realizing what viewers actually want. On the TV side of things they're still struggling to free themselves from super grimdark angst fest. Black Manta looked dope, I was afraid they were going to fuck that costume up.
